169 – The New Year

It’s Dr. D the “V” and welcome back! Let me be the first one to wish you a Happy New Year! Well ok, maybe I’m not the first one because if I’m right I believe this show comes out the day after the new year. So I might not be the first one to wish you a Happy New Year but I want to wish you a very very Happy New Year whether I am the first one or not. Let’s make 2017 the best year of our lives! The best year that we possibly can.

I am going to do a great show for you today. And by the way several of you wrote in on my Facebook with questions. I said that I would take the first 3 questions and what I am going to do is to do that episode next week. That will be the second episode of 2017 because I’ve got something really special for you that I really want to do since it’s the first one of 2017.

I want to talk to you about lifestyle, about your lifestyle, and about The David Madow Lifestyle and how I think that if you just do some of the things that I do, then your life is going to be so much better. I want to talk to you about some of these.

Is my life perfect? No! Have I learned? Have I figured it out? Yes! Do I do everything right? No! Do I do everything right every day? No! Do I do everything I talk about every single day? No! But I do it a lot and I try to do it every day. And I am going to talk to you about some of the most important things in my life now. Some of the things I have learned over the past year or the past several years. I am always learning. So some of these things I am teaching you I have been doing for a long time such running and walking. I’m going on 40 years as a runner. But some of the other things are a little bit newer. Like eating plant based. It’s only been about 3 years for me. So I am just always learning, always changing, and always evolving.

Let’s talk about some of the things that I do. Pick the ones that you really like. You don’t have to do every single thing that I do. You can do some things differently. It doesn’t matter. I’m here to coach you, to motivate you, and to inspire you. I really want to help you live the best life that you can possibly can. So gather around the speaker wherever you may be and let’s talk about some of these things.

These are not in any order, they are all really important. Number 1 is what you’re putting into your mouth, your nutrition. Your food, your liquids, whatever it may be. I have an analogy for you. You want to make sure that you take really good care of your car so of course you put good fuel in it. You’re not going to put junk in your car. So why would I ever put something in my mouth that going to go into my stomach which ultimately will be absorbed through my entire body. Why would I ever put junk, chemicals, and poison in my mouth? Why would I ever do that? I don’t eat animals any more. They’re just not healthy. And not only that there are so many other reasons. I don’t have to go into them all right now, you know the reasons. I eat whole food plant based. If it’s processed I try my best not to eat it. Am I 100% perfect with that? No! I’d be lying if I said I was perfect but it’s close to it. I try my absolute best. Things that come in a package, a box, a can, a jar, chances are it’s processed. Not always but there’s a good chance. That’s kind of a guideline. If you take something out of a box or a bag there’s a very good chance it’s processed. Be careful and read the ingredients. The more whole foods (something that came from the ground) you put in your body, the better it is. And I take it one step further, I try my best to eat all organic. So every single morning Yoko and I always have a good amount of fruit. Typically strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries. We love that kind of stuff. In addition to that, we will have some kiwi and mango; whatever is available. I cut it up every morning. It’s kind of my job in the house. It’s part of my morning routine. We will usually have it with vegan cereal, hot oatmeal, nuts, flax seed, chia seed, hemp seed, and almond milk. It’s a delicious breakfast. We don’t overdo it. We don’t eat too much.

Before breakfast I will generally have a banana or two as well. So I eat a lot of raw in the morning.

By the way, I eat one brazil nut every day which gives a really good amount of selenium into your diet which is wonderful stuff.

The point is put whole food, organic, no meat, no eggs, no animal products, no fish, no dairy, please start start your resolution now if you haven’t done this. If you haven’t done it yet, make 2017 the year! Please do that!

Speaking of my morning routine, so I get up early. Early is relative so I don’t have to give a time. As long as I try to get at least 7 hours of sleep. I try to get 7 1/2 to 8 hours of sleep but 7 is my minimum. I get up early every morning and the first thing I do is to check my Facebook and my emails just to make sure nothing came in overnight that’s super important. Then I’ll feed the cats unless Yoko has already fed them. But then I’ll go into a 15 minute meditation where I’m basically just sitting on the sofa in a very quiet room with very good posture sitting up straight I found a 15 minute meditative song that I love. The song is called Tibetan Curing Vibe by TCO. A lot of times I’ll use my iPhone earbuds which goes right into my brain. It just works! So I’ll do a 15 minute meditation, I’ll wash and cut fruit, and put breakfast on the table. I’ll take a bath and do my “Magic 4”. I do a lot in not a lot of time. I wake up early enough so that I have a couple of hours to do all of that stuff. It makes for a great routine in the morning. I suggest that whatever you do, make it a routine.

Too many people just get up quickly, they down some coffee and an egg or something like that, then they run off to whatever they’re doing whether they’re working or whether they have to be somewhere. Ease yourself into the morning by doing a morning routine. Meditation is really really powerful. Or if you have a chance to do some Yoga that’s great too. Meditation and yoga are very powerful things and are part of The David Madow Lifestyle.

Along with moving your body. Getting out and doing the “Magic 4”. If you’re brand new to me, the “Magic 4” means getting outside and walking 4 miles. It works wonders for your body. You can run. I’m a runner but I still love walking. Walking is the best exercise. In my home gym, if you want to call it that, I do pull ups, push ups, squats, lunges, crunches, curls, shoulder presses, all kinds of things. I’ve got a pull up bar in my closet door. It’s one of those things I got for like $20 at the pharmacy. Pull ups are great exercises. And when you do pull ups make sure you are doing them with you hands facing out. It’s part of my routine and part of The David Madow Lifestyle.

What else? I did mention yoga briefly but Yoko and I have been doing yoga for about 7 years now. We do a class with our friend Sandy, which you probably know if you’ve been listening for quite some time. Sandy was a guest on the show (Episode #15)  along time ago. She’s really cool person. She’s a great friend and a really good yoga instructor. She comes over and gives a private yoga class every monday evening. We’ve been doing this for 7 years now. Yoga is a game changer. It is! Don’t expect results overnight. The same thing with meditation. You just have to do it.

Let’s back up and talk about meditation just a bit. I had a time about 3-4 weeks ago, and I’m human just like you are, where I went through a weird things with business and with family and I was going through a kind of weird time. I’m not sure what started it maybe because it was winter or something but I went through a weird time. I was feeling a little bit “not right”. I didn’t feel like David Madow. I didn’t feel 100% mentally. And coincidentally I let my meditation drop off a bit and I wasn’t really doing it like I should have been. Like I have been telling you to do it. And it really made a difference. I started feeling weirder. Weird is good because I’m weird but you know what I mean. So I said to myself, “hey Dave, you know what the problem is. For some reason you took a break from meditating and it’s catching up to you.” Sure enough, that morning I got on my sofa and it made a difference right away.

So again, it’s not like a miracle cure where you meditate and all of a sudden you are on top of the world but I started doing it again every single morning for 15 minutes. And sure enough within a few days to a week, I really noticed a difference. It’s not like you feel high or anything but it made me feel like David Madow again. I don’t have that weird kind of strange feeling to me anymore. Meditation really really works.

A lot of you folks have been writing to me. And I’m sorry if I can’t get to every single email or Facebook message. I apologize but I’ve been getting so many.

So meditation is definitely a game changer. And I realized it when I stopped doing it. It really helps.

So let’s see what else can I talk to you about on The David Madow Lifestyle? Forgiveness! It’s a big one. As a matter of fact, I am going to be talking about that next episode because one of the three questions I got. I don’t have this in front of me because we’re going to do it next week but it came from a listener named Lori. She has a family member that’s rubbing her the wrong way and she wants to know what should she do? I’m going to tell you something, I learned to forgive people and not hold grudges and not hold bad feelings toward anybody, that’s part of The David Madow Lifestyle for sure. It has helped me so much.

I was one that used to have weird feelings towards people that maybe were not nice to me or did me wrong. I held bad feelings. Get rid of the bad feelings. As a matter of fact, when I was doing Periscope broadcasts every single day, I would look at the hearts going on the screen. And if you’re not into Periscope or don’t know what I’m talking about, imagine a screen with a bunch of hearts all over it moving around the screen. Just picture that. What I told people was that if you’ve got somebody that you’re related to or somebody that you know and for some reason they’ve done you wrong, think of that screen. If you’re at a place where you can close your eyes, close your eyes and visualize a screen filled with hearts and they’re all different colors and they’re all moving around. That’s your love for that person. Because the other way around is hatred and hatred doesn’t work. I’ve tried it both ways. Trust me! Trust me hatred does not work. It only destroys your body and your cells. It doesn’t do anything to the other person. It doesn’t hurt the other person at all. It only hurts you. So let’s stop hating. Let’s start forgiving. Let’s stop holding grudges. So forgiveness is a really really big thing.

Next is happiness. If you’re in a relationship or you’re in a job that you just don’t like look into changing something. Because going on and on and on for years in something that is not working for you, whatever it is, it’s not an option. You are going to wake up one day, 10 years are going to go by and you’re going to be in the same “whatever”. You can fill in the blank. Make changes. Try to make it better if you can. If you cannot make it better, get out and find something better. Trust me! It’s The David Madow Lifestyle.

Another thing I want to share with you about The David Madow Lifestyle is something I do. I’ve been doing this for quite some time but I’ve actually been stepping it up lately because I have found that it is so powerful. It’s giving. I find giving one of the most fulfilling things. I talk about a lot of thing but giving is incredibly powerful. Give. Give to somebody that needs something more than you do. Give to somebody that needs your help. Give to animals, an animal charity, or something but give on a regular basis.

Christians give tithing. If you’re Christian you know what I’m talking about. Tithing is when a Christian person gives 10% (generally) of their income to the church. Something like that. I’m not Christian but I still believe in giving and helping others in a big way.

One of the things that I do is this podcast. I help others in so many ways that don’t have anything to do with money. I don’t make any money from this podcast at all. Last time I checked, nobody’s really sent me a check for this podcast. Nobody has deposited money in my bank account for this podcast. I do it because I love teaching. I am passionate about changing lives. And that’s why I take all this time to not only record the podcast but it takes a lot of preparation and it takes a lot of equipment. I’ve got a studio in my home that I don’t use that much anymore but I have it available. If I have a guest on, I am using my studio. Now I am walking around outside with a hand held recorder which cost me some money. I put money into this. I pay somebody every week. I pay an assistant to help me put up show notes. I pay someone to help put the audio up online and edit the audio. I pay out for this and so that’s giving. I don’t get anything in return except when I get a thank you from you, or an email, or a message saying that I changed your life. That’s all I need. I don’t need anything more than that. And I know I’ve changed and touched a lot of lives. But I also give money. I give money to many different charities.

Guys, I think that’s it. I am running out of time. There are many more things that I do with The David Madow Lifestyle, many more things. But I can’t touch on every single one of them and that doesn’t mean that it’s not important. We live our lives with purpose.

One more thing just came to my mind. I want to do this because it’s very very important. I want to talk about financial for a second. I’m just going to sum it up really really quickly – spend less money than you make. Don’t worry about what anybody else appears to have or what anybody else is doing. Spend less money than you make. Invest the difference. Save for retirement. And get out of debt. I really simplified that. It’s much more complex. But if you just live by those principles, you’ll be way ahead of most people. Way ahead.

Make sure you catch next week’s episode because I will be answering the 3 questions that came to me on Facebook. They are really really good questions.

And one last thing I’m going to leave you with before I end this episode. I was in a mastermind meeting a few weeks ago. We all give tips. We go around the room and we have hot seats and give tips and we build lives. It’s incredible! But one of my buddies in the mastermind said I am going to give you a tip. This is what he said. He said he reads from the book of proverbs every day. And I believe there are 31 verses in the book of proverbs. So what he does is that at the beginning of the month he starts with verse number 1 and reads all of it. And on day 2 he reads the second verse and on and on and on. Of course some of it refers to God and Jesus and if you’re not Christian that’s ok. But what I’m trying to say is that the book of Proverbs is actually really powerful. It’s like reading some incredibly powerful fortune cookies every single day. Some really good life lessons are in the book of Proverbs. Whatever religion you are, I suggest taking a look. Take a look at the book. It’s very interesting.

So I am going to leave you with that. Again, I don’t profess any religion on the show. I don’t talk about politics or anything like that because everybody is different and everybody has different beliefs. I want you to be a good person. I want you to take care of your body. I want you to take care of other people. I want you to teach. I want you to give. I want you to do the right thing. You know what the right thing is. Do the right thing!

I’m Dr. Dave. I’ll see you next week!

Happy New Year!
