174 – Indian Buffets and Weight Loss

Hey there! How’s it going? Dr. D the “V”, David Madow. Welcoming you back to another episode of The David Madow Lifestyle Show. It’s the show where I help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier!

I’ve got a great episode for you today. I’m recording live from Breckenridge, Colorado again. My home in the winter.

I want to share something with you today about your weight. It’s February now and unfortunately a lot of people have released the New Year’s resolutions. ttdx not abiding by them as carefully as they thought they would. But whether you’re thin, medium, heavy, whether you want to lose some weight, whether you want to gain some weight. Whatever you want to do; listen carefully because I am going to share my secrets. And also some of my struggles.

And by the way, if you’re brand new, I appreciate you! I appreciate you whether you’re new listener or long term but I’ve got some new listeners coming on board. So I really really appreciate the fact that you’re with me. I’m going to share some great things with you today.

But before I do so, I also want to give you a little reminder that on March 18th, 2017, I am producing the world’s 1st vegan Indian buffet dinner and open mic. It’s in Owings Mills, Maryland. It’s going to an incredible evening! And whether you’re local to the Maryland area or traveling in from out of state, there’s going to be a lot of cool people. Whether you’re vegan, whether you’re vegetarian, whether you’re just curious, or whether you’re totally an omnivore or carnivore and just want to see what this thing is all about; you are invited. It’s going to be a fun evening. And after dinner we’re going to open up the mic to anybody that’s there that wants to either tell a little story, do a little comedy, do a musical performance, whatever you may want to do. It’s going to be open for you. You don’t have to do anything. You can sit there and hang out and relax and eat and watch the show. Enjoy some good food and some good company.

For more information, check out my Facebook page. We’ve got a bunch of people going so far and hundreds interested. So this is going to prove to be a really cool evening. And if it works out well, which I have every reason to believe it will, but there will be more! And maybe we’ll travel to your hometown, who knows?! We’ll see! It’s going to be some fun.

So let’s talk about your weight. Let’s talk about my weight. I want to start off by saying we can never judge anybody by weight. Weight is a very personal thing no matter where you are in life. People want to be thinner. People want to gain weight. Some people are happy with the way they are.

But you never know really what’s going on inside of somebody and why they are the way they are. We never want to judge anybody personally. But it is true that if you want to be at an ideal weight, I think I can help you. I think I have kinda figured it out. Not without struggles. I’ve had plenty of struggles on my own as well. Not only that but due to some injuries and some other things going on.

I’ve had some struggles lately. Business is never as easy as it seems on the outside. When you own a business, there are always struggles. There’s all kinds of things. And I have found that due to an injury I had a short time ago combined with some stress from business and things like that, I had put on a few pounds back East. I probably put on 10 pounds. I made it a point to say that when I get out to Breckenridge, I am going to lose that weight. And I did! I’ve been pretty successful so far.

I’ve been here a little over 2 weeks now and I want to share with you some things I’ve done here that can be done anywhere. It’s easier here. I think because of the nature of the town because of the outdoor activities and some of the things I do. But what I’ve learned here can be done anywhere. So let me share with you some of the things I’m doing now to actually knock those pounds right off. And feel better. And look better.

When you look in the mirror or look back at old pictures, and you’re heavier than you want to be what’s the first thing that shows? It’s generally your face. And when you look in the mirror or look at old pictures and you’re heavier than you want to be, your face is generally fuller and fatter. And when the weight starts coming off and your face trims down, it’s like you’re a different person.

I have so many friends and so many people that I have helped with their weight troubles over the years and I can see before and after pictures; I have followers and friends that look like totally different people because their faces have narrowed down and they just look great. Now that doesn’t mean that if you have a full face, you look bad. No, I’m not saying that at all. But what I find is the first thing that is extremely noticeable is the face. It’s not necessarily the stomach but it’s the face. And the face really tells all.

So I want to share some of the things I am doing here in Breckenridge that have caused me to lose about 10 pounds in 2 1/2 weeks. And I am still going for a little bit more. So when I get back East, I am going to be a whole different person. I got my hair cut off and I look different. But I’m still the same Dr. Dave, trust me 😉

So in Breck, I walk everywhere we go. Right now I am on my way to the grocery store to pick some things up. Do you think I considered getting in my car? No! I’m walking. I’m walking every single day. When we travel to the ski life when we start skiing in the morning, we walk. And walking with skis over the snow is great exercise. Walking every single day is incredible exercise. At the end of the day, we ski down the mountain and walk about 10 minutes back to our place. So there’s a lot of walking and a lot of movement. What I’ve found is that a lot of time we are hanging around the house watching TV or at lunch eating and we just want to eat, eat, eat. It’s very easy to go to the fridge. It’s very easy to open up cabinets. It’s very easy to start eating and munching on stuff. But I’ve found that when I’m skiing, I’m not as hungry as I would if maybe I had nervous hunger like I have if I was at a business meeting or a lunch back East.

Now, I am not knocking the East. That’s where I live. But it’s really strange. You would think that skiing all morning you would be starved and want to eat this tremendous lunch and pig out. It’s actually kind of the opposite. I don’t feel all that hungry. I don’t generally eat a lot while I am skiing. But then we take a lunch break and I typically pack a sandwich, some green tea, some nuts, and I will be very honest with you occasionally we’ll pack a few little chips. They are not healthy at all by any stretch of the imagination. Am I perfect?  I try to eliminate all the processed foods that I can. That’s another one of my secrets.

Moving your body is not a secret but it’s something that works. If you want to lose weight, you pretty much have to do it on a regular basis.

Eating is another thing. As you know, I eat plant based. I don’t eat anything from an animal. When you eat plant based vegan and you cut out the processed foods and the sugars. No cookies, no desserts, no sweetened drinks at all. The only thing that I drink out here is basically water and unsweetened tea. No artificial sweeteners, no sugar, no nothing. Occasionally, if Yoko and I are out at one of our favorite restaurants we will split a sake. But very very little. I drink almost no alcohol. If you like alcohol, I’m not down on it; I’m just telling you it’s packed with calories. And when you eliminate alcohol, you’re gonna lose weight. When you eliminate wheat products and processed things like that, you’re gonna lose weight.

So those are the two main things that I find that when I am here help me with weight control. Eating a vegan diet, which I do anywhere, and moving my body.

What we do here, I do every day. I do some yoga poses I don’t do a full hour of yoga. I can’t say I don’t have the time for it. I just don’t do it. I do meditation practically every single day. And not noshing on junk. That’s pretty much my secret.

So maybe there’s something to this. If you want to lose weight, maybe there’s something to putting yourself in a different environment for a short period of time and really ramping it up. Moving your body more, taking time to yourself, eating better, and being stricter on your diet.

I am very strict. Even when I’m back East, I’m really strict. But I find that sometimes I do indulge in foods that are processed and not whole foods. I try my best to eat a whole food plant based diet. I never deviate on the animal part of it. I do not want to eat any animal products for so many reasons. I just don’t eat any animal products. So I never ever make an exception there. I never just take a bite of cheese. I just won’t do it. I look at labels and if something has animal products, I just don’t buy it. I am pretty much 100% vegan. Or as close to 100% as possible.

I know that when you eat in a restaurant you are pretty much at the mercy of the restaurant and you never know 100%. But most people as soon as you tell them what you don’t want to have in your food, they are very good about understanding. And I am finding, especially here in Breck too, that people are in tune to vegan eating. When were in an Indian restaurant last night and the waitress there totally understood when I said it. When you go to Indian restaurants and get the bread you think it’s so innocuous but let me tell you there is milk product in nan bread. If you want to get a bread in an Indian restaurant that has no dairy, you’ll want to get roti. Roti is a whole wheat bread that’s made without dairy. But be very careful. There’s hidden animal products in many many things that you would not expect.

So, it’s February. New Year’s resolutions for many of you have kind of gone down the tubes. And sometimes you get frustrated and you struggle especially with weight. So I am here to be your coach. I’m going to help you. I’m going to be your cheerleader. I know you can do this. The best advice I can give you is to try your best to make very few exceptions. The people that say anything in moderation is ok, to me that’s bullshit. I do not think that anything in moderation is ok. I think that’s an excuse for eating junk. Because would you say that heroin or cocaine in moderation is ok? You wouldn’t even think about that I hope. You wouldn’t even consider that in moderation. So why would you consider something that’s really bad for you like a coca-cola ok? I would not. So let’s tighten our belts so to speak (no pun intended) and really watch what we eat and be stricter and move our body.

Last spring, I got a Fitbit Blaze and it tracks my steps every day and tells me how much I sleep at night. I love it! It’s been an invaluable tool to help me keep my body in the best shape possible. I am going to be 62 in May and yeah I’m here skiing with my son who’s 31 and my wife who’s 46. I’m skiing with these youngsters and I’m keeping up…kind of. I’m skiing the blacks, the double blacks, the tough stuff. And do I ever get sore? Of course I do. Right now I could use an incredible massage on my left shoulder. It’s just sore. They are out actually on the slopes right now and I am kind of taking the morning off relaxing and recording this for you. And going to the grocery store getting some really healthy food. That’s exactly what I’m doing.

I’m probably going to be doing another live-stream Facebook video. I try to do those once or twice a month now. I try not to overdo it. I’m getting ready to do one a few days after Superbowl.

A lot of good stuff coming up. I’m excited about life. Do we all have struggles? Absolutely! Is life tough sometimes? It is! It really is! I’ll share some things with you in the very near future about some of the struggles I’ve been going through. And I’m just trying to sort things out. And figure out my life like I always go. I’m very goal oriented. I still carry around my goals in my notebook everywhere I go.

But sometimes things get difficult. And it doesn’t help that everyone is so divided now about the politics that are going on in the U.S. and really with things going on all over the world.  But I’ve never seen a nation so divided. I’ve never seen so many Facebook friends feel so divided. And I want to end with this. If someone is a different religion than you are, a different skin color, a different sexual orientation. I would hope that you respect and love because everyone is different. Don’t judge people on the religion, their skin color, their sexual orientation, whatever they may be. So I really hope you take it a step further and please don’t judge people on what they believe politically because we’re all different. Everybody has their own personal views. And we should all love each other and respect that is what makes the nation (and the world) go around. I see some of these hateful posts on Facebook and it really does upset me just because again I’ve never seen us so divided. So please love your fellow person. And don’t start to hate people based on their political views or their religious views. That’s really bad in my opinion. Let’s try to love.

I’m going to end this show today with love. Because you know something? I love you! You know something else? I will see you next week! I’m Dr. Dave…
