98 – How to Become a Better Person in Ten Steps!

On today’s show, Dr. Dave will teach you how to become a better person in just 10 steps!

Today, I am broadcasting live from Breckenridge, CO. And I will be teaching you 10 things that will make your life better and make you a happier human being.

On a side note, tomorrow morning (8/29) I will be running in the Breckenridge Crest Mountain Marathon. The race goes all through the mountain trails in the back-country and goes up as high as 12,000+ feet. Hopefully by the time you are listening to this I will have finished the race. I like to challenge myself. I talk about the Magic 4, getting out there and walking four miles and doing other healthy things. And  it’s great stuff don’t get me wrong but I really like to challenge myself. Here in Colorado or even locally back home in Maryland, I like to do things that challenge this body. And hopefully I stay in shape, I am healthy, and I love what I do.

Don’t forget! We are getting close to my 100th podcast! I am collecting your comments on how I have changed your life. Send your comments to me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/davidmadow. You may send them through private message post your comments directly to my wall. I would love to hear from you!

My suggestions for becoming a better person are all very simple. And just to let you know, I am not perfect. In the past, I have probably messed up on all of these. You can learn the lifestyle. Try your best to be as good as you can on all of these. Once you master them, then you are probably a great human being. You are probably a great human being right now but this will put you in an even higher class of human being.

How to Become a Better Person

#1 Be nice to others

Do I really have to elaborate on this? Treat others as you would want them to treat you, otherwise known as the “Golden Rule”. I try to be nice to whomever I come in contact with. It doesn’t matter if it’s a homeless person somewhere on the downtown streets or the President of a multi-million dollar corporation or anybody in between. It doesn’t matter who they are, I don’t judge anybody. I try to be nice to every single human being.

#2 Forgive People

If you are a long time listener of The David Madow Lifestyle Show, you know this already. But it is so important. If you are in any kind of a fight or argument, if you’re holding a grudge, or if you are holding hatred in towards anybody, I beg you right now to let it go. The only person you are hurting is you. I have learned that if you learn to forgive it takes you to a totally different level of peace. Again, when you hold a grudge it is only hurting you and your health. It is stressing you out on some level, let it go.

#3 Always Be Honest

Whether it’s a business relationship or someone in your family, there is no reason to lie, tell a fib, to “pull the wool” over someone’s eyes, or cheat somebody. Just always be honest. Some people think that you can’t be 100% honest because they don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. For example, if someone says to me “How do I look today?” and I think they look god awful. How do I answer that? Do I say you look god awful and tell the truth? I am being a 100% honest but hurt their feelings. Or do I sugar coat it? That to me is a judgement call. I think if you are being honest and want to sugar coat your words a bit I don’t think that’s going to hurt anyone. You do have to be careful about certain things. When I say to be honest, I think you know exactly what I mean.

#4 Give to Others

Give to charity. If you don’t have the means to give to charity, I want you to give your time.  I want you to help others in some way. I have a list of probably seven or eight different charities I give to. It doesn’t matter how much you give as long as you give something. My charities are based primarily on animals. I love animals and love to help them. I want to keep animals free of suffering and pain. Since I love hiking and backpacking, I also give to organizations that maintain trails and things like that. You can also give to your church, mosque, synagogue, or whatever religious persuasion you may be. You may be thinking that times are tough right now and I don’t have the money to do that. But even a little bit, a tiny percentage of what you have really does help. And believe it or not, I have found that when you give somehow the universe decides to “pay” you back either monetarily or with time. When you give you not only help others but you get in return.

#5 Teach

I think I was put on this planet to teach. I love teaching and helping other people. Nothing gets me more satisfied and fulfilled then when someone writes to me and messages me on Facebook and thanks me for teaching them or says that they have learned something from me or have been inspired by me. It makes my day! If I’ve helped one person, I call that a success. If I have helped you, please write to me and tell me how I have changed your life today. When you teach someone, again, it is very fulfilling. You are helping someone else and it gives you a great sense of pride and accomplishment.

#6 Compromise

I was always guilty of this in the past. I always thought I was very strong in my convictions and feelings in the past. And I always thought it was either my way or the highway. Do it the way I say or don’t do it at all. And that’s really not fair. Of course I believe I am right when I am teaching something but I have to realize that everyone is different. Everyone has their own point of view and not everyone is going to do it exactly my way. And that’s totally fine. In business, relationships, teaching anything, you have to compromise. If it’s always my way or the highway then you’re not going to have any friends and no one is going to respect you. I like to teach by example, do things the right way, have people see me, see what I am doing, and see the results I am getting. And then they will decide for themselves if what I am teaching is valuable. They’ll see. And if it is, they’ll do it the way that I do it. Compromise is really powerful!

#7 Don’t Take Advantage of Others

Don’t take advantage of a human being or an animal. When I say “advantage”, I’m talking about physically, mentally, or financially. Don’t use your power over someone else that may not have as much power or that are in a tough situation. Think before you act!

#8 Don’t Show Off

Don’t brag. Don’t keep score by money or material possessions. I have run into many people that feel that the more money they have or the more possessions that they accumulate, that they are on a higher level or are better than everyone else. That is so wrong on so many levels. First, you never know truly what someone has. Some people prefer not to be ostentatious and instead are frugal because they are happy with what they have. They don’t have to show off. It’s not that I am jealous of these people. I’m not. I live a certain way because I want to live that way. If you think I am ever showing off, please write to me and let me know. In my mind, it’s an inferiority complex.

#9 Respect all Life

I probably go overboard with this one even though I don’t think I do. Even if I find a bug in my house, I usually go out of my way to free it and release it outdoors. I truly respect all life. That goes for all animals, all plants, all trees. etc. Of course, I eat plants. I do believe plants were put on this planet for us to eat. They are sustainable and we can keep growing more of them. If we didn’t eat plants, we wouldn’t be living.

#10 Eliminate Animal Products

Love all animals. Don’t kill them, don’t eat them, don’t wear them, and don’t use them for entertainment. If we all stop going to zoos, circuses, and places like Seaworld, these places will go out of business and the animals will not be held captive. Love animals. Treat them with respect. Keep them free and happy. Animals have feelings. I have spent a lot of time at animal sanctuaries and you would not believe the love, the fear, the jealousy, even the laughter. It’s time to stop thinking that we are the superior species. We don’t need animals in our diet either. You are “looking” at someone now who does not consume any animals. I am 60 years old and I am running a half marathon in the mountains tomorrow. Do I look deprived in any way? Do I look hungry? Do I look week? No! We can be healthier if we remove animal products.

Before I close out the show, I wanted to mention that last week’s episode (Episode #97 How To Meditate), has been my most popular episode so far this year! So many of you have downloaded and listened to it. I hope you are meditating and trying it. Meditation is a true life changer.
