42 – Questions From Listeners – Lose the Love Handles / Stretching and Driving / More

Slice-Your-Age-PodcastJuly 17, 2014 – Episode 42 – We take listener’s questions in this episode! Glenn asks how he can stretch out during his long driving/commuting times. Joe asks how he can get rid of his “love handles!” Mike, a long time runner, wants to know if he should see a chiropractor! Much more!

QUESTION:  What can long distance drivers do when legs get sore and stiff?
Glen, a hiker from Maryland, legs get really sore and stiff from sitting in the car for hours at a time for his job. What can he do about his sore legs without changing his job?

ANSWER:
Many people have no choice in their work and have to do a lot of driving for their jobs. First he needs to get out and stretch every hour or two. He needs to get out of the car.

First, get out and walk around and get your circulation moving around. It would be great to even do some good old-fashioned jumping jacks.

Next, it is great to do some stretching. Hamstring stretches are a great stretch:  http://www.fitsugar.com/5-Easy-Hamstring-Stretches-1983373.

Another tip is take a rolling pin are roll out your muscles. Yes, a rolling pin from your kitchen. You can easily take this in the car and is easier to use than a foam roller on the roll. Here is the idea: http://www.rearickstrength.com/2010/12/how-to-use-rolling-pin-for-soft-tissue.html.

These are also GREAT things to do if you are sitting at your desks and computers for hours!

MINDFULNESS MATTERS
Be mindful when you drive. Do not zone out. Be present in the moment of where you are and where you are going when you drive.  16-20% of all motor vehicle accidents are caused by distracted driving.  60% of people admit to driving while fatigued and an astounding 15% of people have admitted to even falling asleep while driving. Be mindful while driving and when tired, please PULL OVER! Also, due to the body’s circadian rhythms they are less alert between 2:00-4:00am and 2:00pm-4:00pm. Be especially aware during these times and again pull over if you need to – your life and the lives of others are just not worth it.

QUESTION: What can you do about love handles?
Joe, a runner who runs 15-20 miles a week, called in wanting to know what he can do about his love handles.

ANSWER: FOOD!
The answer is one word = FOOD! If you are truly just eating lean meats, fruits, and vegetables then you will not have love handles. If you are having pie, cake, donuts, beer, and snacks and goodies that goes right to the love handle area – especially for men. “Great job on your running Joe! This comes right smack down to eating my friend!” says Dr. Dave. “Eat your biggest meal in the morning, then less at lunch, and least amount at dinner,” says Yoko.  You really need to get rid of all the artificial foods and sweets. Try to have as much fresh whole foods as possible. You will lose weight and lose those love handles. You can take your measurements and do the “naked test”. Stand in front of a full length mirror naked and look at yourself head to toe and see where it is you want to lose some pounds.

JUICING
Dr. Dave and Yoko want to thank Dr. Dave’s brother, Richard Madow, for his Breville juicer. They eat a wonderful healthy breakfast and wanted to take it up a notch. Here are the Breville juicers to check out: http://www.breville.ca/beverages/juicers.html. They also didn’t want a store bought juice without any preservatives. Just today Dave and Yoko had a juice with romaine lettuce, apple, cucumbers, pear, celery, and radishes.

There is a guy named Joe who was over 100 pounds overweight who inspired them to get a juicer. His movie and story is very interesting and we encourage you to check him out: http://www.fatsickandnearlydead.com/.

QUESTION: Should I use a chiropractor?
Listener and fan Mike called in and just read an article how chiropractors can help runners. Mike would like to know what are some of Dr. Dave and Yoko’s thoughts about chiropractors for people into fitness and exercise.

ANSWER:
Getting checked out by a professional massage therapist or chiropractor or doctor can be a great idea. Ask them questions. Ask if they deal with people into physical fitness. Ask them how their treatment plans work. “Chiropractors work on bones and Massage Therapists work on muscles,” says Yoko. These two can be a great combination for your health.

41- Weight Loss Can Be Difficult – With Special Guest David Jackson

Slice-Your-Age-PodcastJuly 10, 2014 – Episode 41 – Two Dave’s!!! David Jackson of “The Logical Weight Loss Podcast” is our special guest on the show today. Together, both Daves talk about the difficulties of weight loss. David Jackson reveals some of his true life experiences and roadblocks on his weight loss journey!  This is a good one for anyone that is having or has ever had weight issues.

YOKO IS BACK!
We are so happy to Yoko back! “The food is fantastic in Japan!” says Yoko. “It is very rare to see an overweight person in Japan, except Sumo wrestlers,” says Dr. Dave. Japanese eat many fresh vegetables and very small portions. Westerners would be shocked at these portions.  Even the beverages were small even the water! Yoko had a lovely visit with her family and friends and nourished by that time together and her wonderful native food.

GUEST DAVID JACKSON – LOGICAL WEIGHT LOSS
David Jackson was in a marriage where he was unhappy the last 3 years; and just ate his pain away in burgers, fries, and milkshakes. After marriage #1 ended; David decided to take charge and lose weight. “The best revenge is living well!” says Dave Jackson.  So, he lost 20 pounds and felt great! It is great when you take off the weight and it shows so much that people start noticing!

Here is his itunes podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/logical-weight-loss/id268178375?mt=2. Here is his website: http://logicalloss.com/

DAVID JACKSON NOW – NEEDING TO LOSE A FEW POUNDS
Now, 7 years later David has a few pounds to lose. He is now trying many different things to take weight off again as a 40+ man. He has a calorie tracker on his phone, he steps on the scale daily, he uses a pedometer to track his steps.  It is hard because both he and his wife are overweight and they have a 17 year old eating machine! The journey is so much better when you and your partner are on the same page. Remember Dr. Michael Goldstein from an earlier show? It was so fantastic when his wife finally joined him on his health and fitness journey! Get those partners on board! There are no downsides! It is all positive and filled with great things and results.

DR. DAVE CHALLENGE FOR DAVID JACKSON
Replace the soda pop with fresh spring water and some chamomile tea. Dr. Dave challenged David Jackson to get rid of the Mountain Dew FOREVER! Soda pop is not just empty calories, they are NEGATIVE calories. It takes nutrition from your body to process this sugary crap. It also affects your entire body chemistry and does horrible things to your body. If you want bubbles, you can drink some nice refreshing naturally effervesce carbonated water. There are many that are even lightly naturally flavored with lemon, or lime, or orange. No Mountain Dew David Jackson between NOW and end of August. Dr. Dave put this challenge to Mr. Jackson and will be checking back in with him. You can do it David Jackson!!!

WEIGH YOURSELF EVERY SINGLE DAY
Start your day naked and step on the scale! This is your tool and measurement to guide your day of eating and activity. If you are up a bit, you will be very conscious of what you eat and will want to walk or run for an extra 15-30-60 minutes. Work to rebalance things each day. If you weigh yourself weekly or monthly, you could be many pounds off of your target and have a struggle to readjust instead of just a few modifications in a day.

EMOTIONAL EATING
Are you really hungry? Are you tired? Are you stressed? Are you frustrated? FOOD is NOT the answer. EXERCISE is the answer. Throw on your running shoes and head out the door. Do not deal with stress and emotions with eating!

HOLIDAYS ARE NOT AN EXCUSE TO EAT LIKE CRAP
Do not celebrate holidays by filling your day with junk. This is a horrible way to celebrate. Celebrate the holidays by enjoying the people at the parties! Don’t make eating the central focus. Also, when pushy Aunt Bessie tries to force her cheesecake on you, politely say “no thank you”. Do not get guilted into eating anything. Do not let 2nd helpings forced on you. Walk away and stay away from the food table! Grab a glass of water or a tea and walk away from the table and socialize. You are not there for the food; you are there for the people!

COUNTING CALORIES
Dr. Dave does not believe in counting calories. He believes in making every bit count. Only eating food of high nutritional value. Eating 6 small meals a day. Only eating what your body needs and wants. Not rewarding yourself with food. Not cheating just this once because it is a holiday or someone’s birthday.

LIVE A HAPPY LIFE
“It is not only eating well and exercising to have your best life, you need a happy life!” says Dr. Dave. “If you are in a job you hate or in a bad relationship, you need to change it and get out!” Do everything you can to fix it to make it right. If it cannot fix it; then you need to get out! You need to make your happiness a priority.

40 – Sugar Addiction / Tips to Staying Healthy Wherever You Are

Slice-Your-Age-PodcastJuly 3, 2014 – Episode 40 – Dr. Dave starts the show off by answering a listener’s question about an addiction – SUGAR! He explains how to kick this very dangerous habit! Next Dave brings in Sandy, his yoga instructor as his guest and they discuss how to stay healthy no matter where you may be! Dave talks about his recent trip to Manhattan and what he did there to keep up with the healthy lifestyle! This is a great not to be missed show!

QUESTION FROM CALLER: HELP! I AM ADDICTED TO SUGAR!
Listener Amy called in: “Hi Dr. Dave! What’s your advice for overcoming an addiction to sugar? I think I am addicted and just cannot stop!”

DR. DAVE’S ANSWER:
“Amy you are not alone! People are addicted to sugar all over the world love sweet things!”

First, eliminate all the dessert foods like cakes, cookies, pies, ice creams.  This is the junk food that needs to go from your life.

Next, you need to limit your fruit intake. Fruit is good and natural, but don’t overcompensate for cutting out desserts.

Third, if you need something sweet and the fruit just isn’t doing it. Have some dark chocolate 70-85%; maybe 1-3 squares a day.

Get started with those 3 tips and see how that changes your life. Best Wishes Amy! Let me know how it works for you.

DR. DAVE’S TRIP TO MANHATTAN NEW YORK
Dr. Dave took a road trip to New York. He  wanted a getaway and wanted to check out some good vegan restaurants. If you live in New York, you have so many great vegan options.

KOREAN MARKETS
In Midtown there were so many fresh markets with hot food, salad/vegetable, and fruit bars. You can just stop in and get some wonderful fresh food for those meals you don’t want to do the full service sit down restaurant. Here is a link to some listed on Yelp:  http://www.yelp.ca/search?find_desc=Korean+Market&find_loc=New+York%2C+NY

HANGAWI VEGAN KOREAN RESTAURANT IN NEW YORK
Dr. Dave went at 4:00pm between lunch and dinner. He relaxed and took his time eating and enjoying and reading on his Kindle.  Dave enjoyed an amazing appetizer sort of like a pancake and some silk tofu soup and other fantastic Korean vegan fare. Check them out:  http://www.hangawirestaurant.com/

AMAZING VEGAN PIZZA AT FREDDIE AND PEPPERS IN NEW YORK CITY
It is a rare day that Dr. Dave has pizza, but he couldn’t resist how amazing this pizza looked and smelled as he was walking down Amsterdam Street near 75th. They had vegan and non-vegan options. It was good and tasty, crisp vegetables, and nice crust. Check them out:  http://www.freddieandpeppers.com/

PEDICURES, MANICURES, MASSAGES
Dr. Dave loves getting a pedicure, manicure, and massages. It is good to have someone take care of you and pamper you. It is good for relaxing and stress. It is good for your health! It is good to get these regularly; at least monthly. There are many options for this either in your hometown or on the road when you travel.

POD 39 HOTEL IN NEW YORK
Dr. Dave stayed at this simple compact modern hotel. There are two Pod Hotels in New York. New York is so exciting and wonderful you shouldn’t spend a lot of time in your hotel. So, save some money and just stay at a simple hotel where you are just going to rest your head to sleep. Check it out:  https://www.thepodhotel.com/

BEN, THE BIG FAT VEGAN PODCAST
Are you vegan or vegetarian or thinking about it? Listen to Ben’s podcast. “Big Fat Vegan Radio is a new podcast by Laura Yaz and Honey LaBronx (a.k.a. Ben Strothmann)Our goal is to spread veganthusiasm, answer questions for new vegans and the veg-curious, while being ridiculous, and creating excuses to eat as much vegan food as possible.” Dr. Dave listens and loves it! Take a listen: http://bigfatveganradio.com/

TAKE A MOMENT – AT HOME OR ON THE ROAD WHEN YOU TRAVEL
No matter where you are. Take time to slow, down, explore, enjoy your surroundings. Take your shoes and socks off and walk in the grass. Maybe even do yoga moves in Central Park New York or do pull ups on construction scaffolding and following your nose to a great vegan pizza joint like Dr. Dave.

Slice Your Age Quickie – Techniques to Help You Sleep Through the Night

Slice-Your-Age-PodcastTechniques to help you sleep through the night!  Dr. Dave has decided to throw in a “quickie” episode every so often in addition to his regular full length podcast episodes (which will still come out every Thursday)! The quickies will all be less than five minutes, and will not be edited. These are great for people on the run or anyone wanting to begin their day with a great tip or inspiration! In this quickie, Dave gives you some techniques to help you sleep through the night.  Enjoy it!

SuperFans and Listeners Betty and Misty asked Dr. Dave: “How do I get a good night’s sleep and sleep soundly through the night?”

Dr. Dave answers: “Good sleeping at night starts with what you do during the day. It is an entire lifestyle.” Dr. Dave starts off the day with thinking and meditation, he goes for a walk or run, and eats a very good healthy breakfast. Live a good spirited peaceful non-aggressive life. Do not eat a heavy dinner. Avoid or eliminate all caffeine and alcohol. After dinner time, do peaceful activities like reading, have a cup of tea, do some stretching. End your day earlier at 9:30-10:00pm. Very important hormones and rejuvenation happens to your body between the hours of 10:00pm to 2:00am. It is critical you are sleeping then to live your best life.

You can get so much more accomplished by living your days peacefully, ending them peacefully, and going to bed earlier. Your best success will be creating a morning routine and a night time ritual. Take some time right now and write out 3-5 things you could do every morning to start the day out right and 3-5 things you could do to end your day right. This will be life changing and these are two things you can implement right now… today… when you get home from work. Start a new night routine and a new morning routine tomorrow morning!

All my best,

~Dave

39 – What it Takes to Become Healthy and Stay That Way at Any Age

Slice-Your-Age-PodcastJune 26, 2014 – Episode 39 – Dr. Dave starts the show by answering a listener’s question about how long it should take to walk the “Magic 4” miles. Afterwards, Dave brings a remarkable guest into the studio! Dr. Michael Goldstein may be 63 years old by the calendar, but just wait until you hear what he does and how he can help you!

QUESTION FROM LISTENER
Jamie listens on her way to work and wants to know: “What about those 4 miles you talk about? How fast do I need to go? Do I walk or run?”

Answer: Dr. Dave has done years of research and experimenting over the years. “Something happens to your body and psyche that happens when you hit the 4 miles distance. You can walk or run and speed is not THE most important thing.” Dr. Dave walks this in about one hour which is a 15 minute mile pace. Faster is okay, but you should really try to make this your goal to hit this. If you are just getting started, focus on an 18 minute mile, and work your way down over the weeks to 15 minutes. Give yourself 2-3 weeks to increase your pace by a minute per mile. Some super beginners, may even want to keep the watch at home for a while they are just trying to walk 4 miles without stopping. Note: 4 miles is 6.4 kilometers since we have listeners all over the world.

GUEST ON SHOW – DR. MICHAEL GOLDSTEIN
Dr. Michael Goldstein, is 63 years old, and a dynamo. He looks great and feels great. Dr. Dave had to have him on the show. He is a living example of what Dr. Dave talks about every week. He is running, working out, skiing black diamonds, biking, climbing, backpacking. He is a grandfather, doesn’t have an ounce of fat on him, super fit, and can run circles around 40 year olds! Dr. Mike was a great guest! Give the show a listen and hear the great conversation and wisdom of both Dr. Mike and Dr. Dave!

“You want to feel good and healthy. You want to feel good in the morning when you wake up,“ says Dr. Michael Goldstein. When he was 28, he lost an important tennis match to someone older than him, because he just ran out of gas and wasn’t as healthy as he thought. So he decided to run 10 days in a row to see if he could make it work in very busy life. He found a way to make this happen and it changed his life.

“Running made me feel better, gave me more energy, kept my weight down, more stamina, and helps with all other sports, and controls stress,” says Dr. Mike. Running is one of the most efficient exercises you can do and you can do it anywhere at any time.

Dr. Dave asks Dr. Mike: “You have a busy busy life. You are one of the busiest people I know. How do you stay disciplined? One of the biggest things I hear from listeners is that they just don’t have time. Give us your secret!”

Dr. Mike answered: “First find an activity that you like well enough to keep doing it. It could be running, walking, biking. You want to enjoy the activity itself and the benefits you will receive from it.”

Next, it helps if your partner/spouse makes fitness and health a priority. It changes everything when you have a partner that believes in this. Now, you may not be able to work out together, but if your health and fitness are a priority it changes your whole life and relationship.

Dr. Mike now works out with a personal trainer once a week too. He loves the motivation and someone to keep pushing him and showing him new things. Also, Dr. Mike and his wife are going to a running form clinic at a local running store together. They videotape you and help you with your technique head to toe to be more efficient and comfortable.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO EXERCISE?
Anytime you are comfortable is the best time to work out. However, there are many studies showing that the most successful people work out first thing in the morning before the day fills up with things, people, events, and busy-ness. You are making it a priority and starting your day right! Also, often in the morning – especially during summers, it is a much nicer temperature.

SITTING CORE TEST
Sit in a cross legged position. Now get up not using your hands at all to get up. Can you do it? If you cannot or are struggling, you need to strengthen your core.

RESISTANCE TRAINING
Running does not do much for your upper body. Pull ups, push ups, balance balls, and resistance bands are a great way to work out your body with just your own body weight. Dr. Dave also does crunches, planks, and squats daily. You also can do this anywhere not matter where you travel.

BALANCING
Dr. Michael Goldstein challenges you to practice balancing daily. Each day when you brush your teeth, try balancing on one leg. It is harder than you may think. Keep practicing and keep getting better. Awesome tip of the day!

STRETCHING AND YOGA AND MASSAGE
Dr. Mike does stretching and wishes he was more flexible. Dr. Dave and his wife Yoko do yoga daily. Anyone can start at any level in any way. All the poses have modifications for all levels. Make stretching and yoga can prevent and eliminate pain. Stretches very important to Dr. Mike are quad, hamstring, and calf stretches. Some people stretch before and after exercise. Dr. Dave thinks it is fantastic to start your day no matter if you are working out or not that day.  A great therapy to build into your life is regular massage therapy. Massage therapy can be curative and preventative. It really can make your life better.

ARE YOU HAPPY?
If you are not happy with your job, your relationships, and your life – this will manifest in your body and health. “When the relationships in your life are more important than your possessions in your life – you will be happy,” says Dr. Goldstein. “Too many people lose sight of what is important. Your possessions will not make you happy, your relationships will make you happy,” says Dr. Mike.

DON’T COMPETE WITH OTHER PEOPLE, COMPETE WITH YOURSELF!
Dr. Goldstein says, “Someone will always be better, strong, richer, healthier than you. Just worry about bettering yourself! Wake up each day and make yourself and your life better!”

Stacie answers that in today’s age it is easy to connect with a dietitian in person, on the phone, or via Skype. When you are ready for a change and committed to that change; that is the time to see a dietitian to help you.

QUESTION FROM LISTENER – HOW TO SATISFY SWEET CRAVINGS?
SuperFan Dawn Patrick asks, “What is a healthy way to deal with sweets cravings?”
Stacie answers, “First, sugar is an addiction – A true addiction!” Then, move to serving your sugar cravings with fresh fruit and dried fruits. Stay away from artificial sweeteners too! They are a horrible replacement; even worse than regular sugar.

GET LOCAL!
Know where your food is coming from. Check out your local food markets and road side stands. Find the local farms and farmers in your area. If you are a meat eater, vegetarian, or a vegan;  know where you food comes from and make sure it is a close to home as possible and that if there are animals involved it is a humane situation.

PANTRIES AND FRIDGES
Clean it all out! Wash off all the shelves. Throw out old food, strange food, bad foods, junk foods, and spoiled foods. You should do this once a month. Only keep those of high nutritional value and that contribute to your health.
SMOOTHIES
Smoothies are better than juicing. Juicing takes out the fiber and pulp. Stacie recommends: frozen banana, spinach or kale, almond or coconut milk, almond butter or nut butter, and some kind of berries.

GUESTS ZEKE AND REBECCA
Zeke is a personal trainer and Rebecca is a fitness competitor in figure competitions. They both are in incredible shape. Dr. Dave had them on the show to give their perspective on health and fitness. They are not only at the top of their game; they train people to guide them to get there too!

ZEKE THE PERSONAL TRAINER
Zeke’s typical clients are business owners. They spend the day telling people what to do. Then they come to Zeke and want to be told what to do to reach the best success most effectively. One of their weakest areas of their body are their backs. Zeke has to often fix them up first before starting to build them up.

“Every symptom of pain is related to a stressor,” says Zeke. When people feel stress sitting at their desks and computers during work; their neck and shoulders tense up as a result. Zeke says, “We need to focus on how to relax and breathe to start.”

“Wake up in the morning, Look in the mirror, and Love the person you see!” is the best start of your day and conquering stress!

MORNING ROUTINE
Dr. Dave wants you to have a morning routine. Don’t rush getting up, scarf something, and run out the door. Do not start your day with stress! Get up early, do some breathing stretching exercises. Have a healthy slow breakfast outside on your patio or deck while taking in nature.

POSITIVE THINKING
“Positive thinking does work!” says Zeke. Say positive things to yourself when you wake up and throughout the day. “I am wonderful, confident, and powerful in every way!” Write this down this phrase from Zeke and say it to yourself 4-6-10-12 times a day. “If you can change your thoughts, you can change how you go about your day,” says Zeke.

MOVING FORWARD
“You can always move forward from your past. You can remember it, but keep it in the past. Keep moving forward,” says Zeke. You also need to surround yourself with people who believe in change and the good in you and moving forward with your life and their life. “Change itself will infuse energy and vitality in your life!” says Zeke. Do not get involved or be around anyone who is negative and a downer. They will pull you down with them. You cannot be around people who have a negative thought pattern and outlook on life. It is so important to surround yourself with healthy, fit, positive people. “None of us were put here to live alone,” says Zeke.

DO YOU TAKE CARE OF OTHERS AND NOT YOURSELF?
How many of us work in a field or have a life devoted personally or professionally to helping others? And then you don’t take care of yourself as good as you could. Do you put yourself last? Do you need reminders from your partner to eat and sleep and drink more water? It is wonderful to be partnered with someone that cares about you and encourages you to be your best you!

QUESTION FOR TRAINERS: PROTEIN SHAKES
Rebecca loves Muscle Tech Phase 8 protein shakes. She is a professional competitor and has tried many shakes. She said the components are fantastic and the taste is great! Taste is so important for people to stick to keep drinking protein shakes. She says this one http://www.muscletech.ca/products/phase8/.

QUESTIONS FOR TRAINERS: Weight Training vs. Cardio
Listener Melissa asks if weight training or cardio is better for fitness and weight loss.

Zeke says, “Weight training is more important. You can make weight training either anaerobic or aerobic. If you do a ton of cardio you will actually deplete your body’s energy stores. You can convert muscle mass to energy if you overdo it on cardio.”

#1 Diet, #2 Weightlifting, #3 Cardio is the order of importance for good health and weight loss,” says Rebecca.

Also, look up the phrase and methodology called “concurrent training”. It talks about a blend of weightlifting and cardio and how to do it most effectively.

QUESTION FOR TRAINERS: When to work out?
Listener Dawn asks, “When is the best time to work out? Morning or evening? Days off?”

Rebecca and Zeke both agree that morning workouts are the best. You have your full energy and it is a great way to start your day! End of day or later day workouts can get bumped with something called life. So much can drain you in the day or interfere with your time by the time you reach the evening. The best most successful people work out in the morning. You can consider a 2nd workout later in the day as an extra or back up or if you are in training.

ARE YOU IN A RELATIONSHIP THAT IS NOT HEALTHY?
First thing is to try to fix it. Try to make it as good as you can. It is time to re-think it and move forward in a healthy positive way. It is important who you share your life with and spend your time. Do not live another day unhappy or in struggle or in fear. This is YOUR life and start living it how you want. Start today by making a list of what you want your life to look like. Once you make that list; read it! Read it good! Are you living the life you should be?

LIFE CHANGING DECISION FOR DR. DAVE AND HIS WIFE YOKO
After a lot of research and studying, Dr. Dave and his wife Yoko have decided to become Vegan! This podcast will not turn into a vegan podcast, but we will be sharing all the things we use, taste, and try that allow us to live a better life. We do not use or consume anything that uses animal products or is tested on animals.

When they used to eat meat, they always went to a local known farmer that treats animals humanely and is all organic with no chemicals. If you chose to eat meat, you can do it wisely and more caring.

This decision was a long time coming and gradual. Then the less meat they ate the better they felt, the better their skin looked, the healthier they were. Some people do veggie days – like Meatless Monday. The more healthy you eat; the better you feel without a doubt!

Feel free to listen to some of our previous podcasts discussing vegetarianism and veganism like this one: Should we go Vegan? Episode 28 https://www.davidmadow.com/28/.

Also, a good movie that, is not over the top, to watch about Vegan is “Forks Over Knives” recommended by their yoga instructor Sandy. http://www.forksoverknives.com/

CALL FROM LISTENER TERRY
Question: “What is your secret to happiness?”

Answer:  “#1 I am living my life now the way I want to.” says Dr. Dave.

He went to school as a dentist and became a practicing dentist with a big house, cars, kids in private school – the whole perceived package. It just wasn’t exactly the life of happiness and all that he wanted. He had a busy successful practice and all the material things one would seem to want.

Well, he started thinking about life and what he wanted out of it. He wrote out all his goals in a notebook and looked at them every single day. He designed a life very different than what it was 20 years ago. Money and material things do not buy happiness. Listen and learn about how Dr. Dave makes goals and reaches goals: https://www.davidmadow.com/13/

ENJOY YOUR LIFE
“Figure out how to make your life better.” says Dr. Dave. Find your happiness. Can you make your job or life better? If not, can you change it?

WHAT IF YOU ARE IN A BAD RELATIONSHIP?
Should you keep it? Can you change it? Is it something that can be worked on and changed? If you can make it better and make it work – great! If nothing seems to work, if you have tried talking, you have tried counseling, and it is just isn’t working – then you need to make the hard decision and get out.

QUESTION FROM JENN IN NEW YORK
Question: “I am confused by all these diet options like: gluten-free, wheat-free, portion control, a commercial program. It is confusing to me what is right and what is wrong and where to start. Another question is about chronic pain and how to cope and deal with that?”

Answer: “It is really confusing out there Jenn! You are right!” says Dr. Dave. There are many options and choices. There is not one way or one answer. Someone could be vegan and eat chips and chocolate and that would not be healthy.

You need to start with getting all of the artificial processed junk out of your diet! Here is a great episode we did on the A-Z of eating and where to start with healthy eating:  https://www.davidmadow.com/18/

Part 2 Answer: “Massage, Yoga, Breathing, Good Sleep are all helpful for chronic pain.” says Yoko. Yoko is Dr. Dave’s wife and a registered professional massage therapist. There are many ways to cope with and reduce pain. You should make sure you get a check up for inside and outside pain. You need to make a plan with your caregivers to make your life better and less painful.

HYDRATION FOR RACES
Be sure to drink water before events. Stop or slow down for each water station. Remember to hydrate after the race too!

WALKING AFTER RACE
It is good to walk around after a race instead of stopping abruptly. In fact, Dr. Dave and Yoko do not take the shuttles back downtown after the race. They walk the 12K back downtown after the race. Join them next year on the race and the walk back!

NAKED RUNNERS
Dr. Dave interviews Naked Dan from Texas and Naked Ray from San Francisco after the race! Ray and Dr. Dave say a big hello to Ray’s friend Naked Gypsy! I guess they are doing their Naked Test in front of everyone! [Did you take the Naked Test yet? Find out all about it here: https://www.davidmadow.com/the-naked-test-ice-cream-vs-yogurt-and-many-more-important-questions/]

BAY TO BREAKERS RACE INFORMATION
San Francisco’s Bay to Breakers is the oldest consecutively run annual footrace in the world, a staple to the City by the Bay since May 1912. With a starting point near the San Francisco Bay, a few blocks from The Embarcadero, the 12K race runs west through the city and finishes at the Great Highway where breakers crash onto the Pacific Coast’s Ocean Beach. A quintessential San Francisco experience for 102 years, the race is interwoven into the fabric of the city and is a true reflection and celebration of life between the breakers and the Bay. Note: the 2015 edition will take place on Sunday, May 17th. http://www.baytobreakers.com/

34 – The Naked Test / Ice Cream vs Yogurt and Many More Important Questions

Slice-Your-Age-PodcastMay 22, 2014 – Episode 34 – Dave explains what “The Naked Test” is and how it can get you healthier. Dave and Yoko answer listener’s questions. One question asked which is healthier – fat free ice cream or artificially sweetened frozen yogurt. Much more! Sandy is a guest on today’s show!

THE NAKED TEST – ARE YOU READY?
Get naked. Stand in front of a full length mirror. Be sure room has good lighting. That’s right, you need to turn on the light! Look at yourself from head to toe. Look at yourself with admiration and love. This is not about looks or criticism.

This is about taking a look in a real way at the areas you need to work on. People spend days and weeks not looking at themselves naked, quickly taking clothes on and off.

Let’s say you look at your belly and there is more there than you would want and maybe there is a little or a lot of pudge there. Then you remember that and look into taking care of slimming down and firming up this area. You could do some ab work, crunches, and planks.

Many women look at their upper arms and with age it may have gotten less firm and wobbly. You may need to focus on bicep and tricep work with dumbbells or kettlebells, or bicep push-ups, or tricep push-ups.

So take off your clothes today! Look at the truth! Accept your truth and love yourself. But study your body and know exactly where you need to improve and work hard.

QUESTION FROM LISTENER ABOUT ICE CREAM
(Sugar-Free Ice Cream or Fat-Free Frozen Yogurt or?)
Amy Lynn called in and wanted to have something sweet and wanted an ice cream sundae with fresh fruit. She was debating if it was better to have sugar-free ice cream or fat-free frozen yogurt.

Sugar-Free is a bad option. It is worse than sugar. Sugar-free means filled with chemicals and artificial options. Don’t do it!

Fat-Free is bad option. “It is complete crap!” says Dr. Dave. It is not real food and garbage. Again, this is filled with chemicals to make fat-free happen.

Dr. Dave, Yoko, and Sandy vetoed BOTH options Amy Lynn wanted. You need to look at the back of every package of everything you are going to put in or on your body. Do you know what it is? Can you pronounce it? If not, don’t buy it and put in your body!

Sandy recommended freezing banana chunks for that texture and consistency of ice cream. Frozen bananas are awesome in fruit smoothies and thicken it right up. Yoko wanted to mention for the most part, try not to eat fruit at night. It is not good for the body. Fruit is good in the morning!

DARK CHOCOLATE
If you are looking for something a little sweet to snack on; try dark chocolate. Go to your health food store and choose an organic fair trade dark chocolate. If you have only done milk chocolate, you may need to start with 60% cocoa. However, your goal should be to consume dark chocolate at minimum 70% up to 85%. Anything greater than 85% is really an acquired taste and often greater than that used in baking. One of our listeners, Melissa, allows herself 2 squares of dark chocolate (70% cocoa or greater) each day for her sweet snack. Some studies say this may actually be a good thing!

QUESTION FROM LISTENER ABOUT DINNER
Listener Sabrina Hinkle asks:
“If you could only grab 3 items from the store for dinner, what would they be?”
Sandy answers:
“Plum Tomatoes, Whole Wheat Pasta, Spinach”
Yoko answers:
“Tofu, Natto (fermented soybeans)/Chick Peas,Mixed Greens Salad”
Dr. Dave answers:
“Mixed Greens, Mixed Beans, Olives”

QUESTON FROM LISTENER ABOUT CAREER HAPPINESS
An anonymous listener, a female dentist, really isn’t enjoying her profession because she just feels hated. Even though she helps and fixes people’s teeth, health, and mouths. She hates that the patients hate dentistry and her profession. Many people may feel their profession is not liked or respected like a plumber, dentist, or lawyer.

Dr. Dave wants you to be proud of your profession and hang around people that are positive. Change something to love your profession again. If you cannot find love for your career, this will cause you stress. If you are any job or relationship that is causing you stress, you need to change your outlook, change what you are doing, or get out of it. Sandy says you cannot change people, put you can change your experience and how you see it.

One thought is to think about 3,4, 5 positive things you are doing that is positive and helpful in your career and say to yourself: “I am helping people. I am making their lives better. I am fixing broken and painful teeth. I am making a difference. I am making them feel better and look better. My patients will leave better than they came in!”

Bottom line: try changing your thoughts and try to make it better. But if you cannot make it better and in your heart it is just not for you, change careers. You cannot live a life unhappy and stressed out by your career day after day. This is not good for your mind or body.

QUESTION FROM LISTENER ABOUT FIRMING UP
Sandra asked can you firm up an older, over 40 year old body. Our yoga Sandy jumped in and said she is 53 and her body is firm ;). It is never too late. Now Dr. Dave said an 83 year old isn’t going to have the body of a 20 year old no matter how much you exercise. But, no matter how hold you are and what age you are at you can look better if you do better. Dr. Dave said if you could see Yoga Sandy and his wife Yoko, you would believe they on the cover of a Yoga Magazine with their beautiful fit bodies. They make good choices and it shows!

Dr. Dave has a brand-new voicemail hotline for listeners to ask questions, leave comments, leave a message for speaking requests. Also, please speak clearly because we may even use your question on one of our episodes of the show. Thanks for all of your wonderful comments, feedback, tweets, and facebook posts. $29 EGG? What?
Dr. Dave went to a special Mother’s Day brunch buffet with family. There was a crazy amount of food from french toast, to danishes, to cakes, deep fried potatoes, desserts, meats. No matter how much or how little you eat, it was one price for this breakfast. The only thing that was really truly healthy and part of Dr. Dave’s lifestyle was eggs! So, Dr. Dave literally got one egg and he and his wife Yoko split one french press pot of decaf coffee. Guess what? That one egg and sharing a coffee was $29. Well, it was nice to be in company of his mom and family.

The point of this story and previous episodes (such as eating during the holidays), is to encourage you to do what is right for you and your life and your body. Don’t let people pressure you into going off “your plan”. This is not a temporary fix. This is a lifestyle! You can do it! This is your life, your body, your health!

QUESTION FROM LISTENER ABOUT GLUTEN
Question: GLUTEN = What is it? Should you avoid it?
Answer: Gluten refers to the proteins found in wheat endosperm. Some people have a disease diagnosed by their doctor as celiac disease (more info about celiac disease:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coeliac_disease). Other people may be sensitive and have a reaction to gluten. This is a huge hot topic and big trend right now. 5 years ago, Dr. Dave removed gluten from his diet and it had a great effect on his life and skin and health. Dr. Dave does not have celiac disease, but he did have symptoms that caused him to give gluten-free a try. So, 5 years ago, he stopped eating gluten and felt a huge difference within 3-4 weeks. Yoko also said she recently read an article that athletes are not elminMore information about Gluten: http://www.livescience.com/39726-what-is-gluten.html

SOYBEANS AND SOY PRODUCTS
90% of them are GMO = genetically modified organisms. There is a lot of controversy about this and there are so many warnings to stay away from soy beans and soy products and anything that has been DNA modified as GMO product. Phyllis Ann is one of our super fans and just sent in a recipe for a healthy non-gmo, non-soy home-made coconut olive oil mayonnaise. Check it out her recipes and some awesome other ones on our Slice Your Age website here: https://www.davidmadow.com/healthy-recipes/coconut-olive-oil-mayonnaise-pufa-free/

QUESTION FROM LISTENER ABOUT LIVING HEALTHIER
Question: I suffer from bi-polar, ADD, Anxiety, and Depression. I have many changes in my life to live a healthier life like running, yoga, meditation, and gave up smoking a few weeks ago. Help! What else can I do?
Answer: “Congratulations for making so many fantastic, wonderful, and healthy changes!” replied Dr. Dave.  If you can get up to the “magic 4 miles” of walking, jogging, running, or a combination each day, it will make a tremendous impact on your life. Don’t give up and keep doing it. Make sure you are eating as healthy, fresh, unprocessed, and clean as you can. Please see past episodes of very specific things to eat and eliminate: https://www.davidmadow.com/18/ = Food and Eating 101 Episode. This includes sugars, desserts, caffeine, sodas, and the like. Also, make sure that you are well rested and get good sleep each night. Yoko said keep a good consistent rhythm and schedule in your life. Organize your day and routine with a range that you will wake up, eat, exercise, go to sleep. Organizing the rhythm of your life and having rituals will help with anxiety and anxiousness.

MORNING RITUALS
Don’t ever just jump out of the bed and rush out the door in 5 minutes. Get up early. Get up with plenty of time to ease into your day peacefully. Dr. Dave and Yoko get up early, before sunrise, and do some type of exercise and meditation. Take time to eat a nice breakfast and enjoy the start to your day. Think about the day ahead and plan it out. Start the day with happy and peaceful thoughts and activities. Try it! You will not regret it!

“THE POWER” BOOK BY RHONDA BYRNE
Yoko is reading a book that their yoga master Sandy gave them. She hasn’t finished the book but wanted to share some of what it about. The author Rhonda Byrne says that Love is the Power! Love is the key of life. You can change everything with love. “If you want to lose weight. Imagine you have the body you love, instead of imagining yourself as overweight.” Then by loving yourself and your body and you will receive the body you imagined. Here is a link to the book on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/The-Secret-Power-Rhonda-Byrne/dp/1439181780

QUESTIONS OF THE SHOW

 Listener Mary Beth asks:
“How do you get exercise in when you are at a desk job all day?”
Dr. Dave’s first answer is planking. His goal right now is 2 to 2.5 minutes. You can start with planking for 30 seconds and each week increase it by 30 seconds until you are in the 2-3 minute range. Some other ideas are push-ups, jumping jacks, squats, and yoga poses. You need to give your eyes and mind a break from those computers. You need to get out of your chair, get moving around, and get your blood flowing.

Yoko also recommends to her clients to get out at lunch time and walk around the building or outdoors if you can. She also suggests to make sure you stretch and rotate your neck.

Dr. Dave has a stand up desk in his office and they have even seen treadmill desks too! A set of 3lb, 5lb, or 8lb weights are a good idea to some arm exercises while working or on breaks. Here is a link to some easy beginner arm dumbbell exercises: http://www.fitsugar.com/Dumbbell-Arm-Exercises-Beginners-24035700

Another question comes from listener Larry:
“Why do people give up and act old after the age of 50?”

Yoko says that the average age of first-time grandparent is 47. Many people have this mindset that they are old and start acting and being old. Dr. Dave went to a high school reunion a few years ago and was astonished at how old some people looked and acted. But there were also people on the other end of the spectrum like Dr. Dave that were fit and healthy and take care of their bodies and care what they eat. The lifestyle you have been living shows on your on the outside or inside! This is why Dr. Dave says to start now and start today. If you do not have your health, you will live a very limited life! Slice your Age in half and start making healthy decisions and choices!

And listener David Kimmel, who is a long distance skateboarder:
“What kind of socks do you run in?”

The kind of socks Dr. Dave wears are called “Experia” by Thorlos https://www.thorlo.com/activity/miscellanous/experia-reg-socks. Dr. Dave has tried many many kinds of socks over his dozens of years of running and these are absolutely the best.  Yoko also recommends using “Sport Slick” http://www.sportslick.com/ lubricant for when you are doing long distances walking, running, and hiking. Also, Yoko recommends using duct tape! If you have a hot spot on your feet to use instead of a band-aide; it is incredible for your feet. She learned this on a backpacking trip. Just add some around a water bottle and use it when you need it. FYI – These long distance skateboarders go 35, 50, and 90 miles in successive days for one of their races! Find out more about this sport: http://theidsa.org/.

TEAM RIVER RUNNER CHARITY
Dr. Tony Lerra is doing a 12 mile kayak race!  He is a friend, listener, and fan. We want to wish him all the best and support him in his charity race. Team River Runner’s Kayakers was initially established to help active duty military personnel wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan and now they have expanded to helping other Department of Defence and Department of Veterans Affairs initiatives. 19 WAYS TO GET IN SHAPE FOR THE SUMMER – PART 3
Listen to the great information and conversations with Dr. Dave and Yoko today. They are continuing the series how to get in shape and stay in shape this summer!

#14 ABS-OLUTELY!
We are going to be in bathing suits soon so we need to work those ABs today! They are the core of your body and when you have strong abs you feel good and look good. Dr. Dave recommends crunches; old school sit-ups are out. You want to keep your back on the ground and just crunch up. The other thing you need to do is called a “plank”. This looks like a starting position of a push-up but on your forearms. Your entire body is parallel and even. You should start with a goal of 30 seconds at a time and over weeks of practice work your way up to 2 minutes.
basic crunch basic plank

#15 GET A YEARLY HEALTH MEDICAL CHECK-UP
Dr. Dave Madow and his wife Yoko go to the Cooper Clinic in Dallas Texas once a year. This clinic was created by the famous Dr. Kenneth Cooper. This clinic is focused on health, fitness, preventative medicine. They go and see Dr. Kettles who is very healthy and practices what she preaches and is a runner. Here is more info on this particular clinic: http://www.cooperinstitute.org/

#16 STEP ON THE SCALE EACH DAY
The scale is an instrument like your fuel gauge on your car. This is our measurement for the human body; don’t make it a guessing game. This is a powerful device in your home to use the knowledge and information to map out your day. If you get on one morning and the scale is up higher than you want, maybe you did something differently the day before. You can now back off and accommodate this new day and maybe make some different choices throughout the day. Maybe you run a little further or eat a little less to get back to your baseline.

#18 AM I REALLY HUNGRY?
I am eating out of boredom or stress? Listen to your body. Are you really hungry? Dr. Dave primarily eats 6 small meals a day instead of 3 big meals with a big gap in between. It keeps your blood sugar levels even instead of roller coaster. Also, take your time when you eat. Put your fork down between each meal. Yoko has saying: “Eat a little bit, Drink a little bit, Talk a little bit.” Don’t shovel it in! Take your time and enjoy your meals and your company during a meal. Share your meal and share your day. Do not eat until you are absolutely full. Wait until you are about 80% full and let your brain catch up that you have eaten enough.

#19 START NOW!
Start now! I don’t want to hear tomorrow, next week, or the famous Monday! What can you start now? Start with your next meal and eat slower and enjoy your meal and company. Can you re-play all the shows in this Shape up for Summer series while doing crunches and planks? Just do it and have some fun! We are here with you! You can hang out with us on Facebook, you can tweet us, you can even email Dr. Dave! See all of the links and connections below. Connect with the Slice Your Age community and Dr. Dave himself! Do all of these tips and ideas and be proud to show off your accomplishments, goals, and body!

30 – Nineteen Ways to Get Into Shape For The Summer – Part 2

Slice-Your-Age-PodcastApril 24, 2014 – Episode 30 – Summer is quickly approaching and Dr. Dave and Yoko  continue with the list of things that  you need to do to get into your best shape ever for this summer. It is interesting how this episode unfolds. Lots of motivation!

19 WAYS TO GET IN SHAPE FOR THE SUMMER – PART 2
Listen to the great information and conversations with Dr. Dave and Yoko today. They discussed so many great healthy things and even re-capped some of last week’s tips and how they are already resonating and changing lives. This episode is jam-packed with fantastic motivation! It is a MUST LISTEN!

FROM LAST WEEK = #2 KEEP A FOOD JOURNAL
Dr. Dave recommended on last week’s show to keep a food journal so you are aware of really what you are eating and how it contributing to your health plan. Dr. Dave’s wife Yoko has just started keeping a food journal. She has had good success. She found on the days she kept a food journal, she ate better. She found it very helpful and motivating.

Melissa, another listener, was inspired in the past week to get a free app for her iphone called My Fitness Pal ( http://www.myfitnesspal.com/ ) to record her food consumption and calories consumed + her workouts and calories burned. Melissa loves seeing the numbers. She was constantly saying to herself, “Should I eat this? Maybe I should workout longer to burn off some things I already ate or that glass of wine or beer I want tonight?” In just one week of keeping a food journal (on her phone) like Dr. Dave recommended she lost 1.6 pounds!

#11 EAT BREAKFAST, EAT BREAKFAST, EAT BREAKFAST!
There is a saying about breakfast: “Breakfast like a King, Lunch like Prince, Dinner like a Pauper.” 25% of people in North America do NOT eat breakfast! This is a horrible mistake! You probably haven’t eaten for 10-12 hours and your body needs its blood sugar levels back up. If you skip breakfast, your body gets desperate at around 10-11am and you will grab a high sugar snack fast like a donut or candy bar – which is just horrible for you. Eat within 30-60 minutes of getting up and make it healthy. Be sure to include a healthy protein like an egg or two and meat or vegetarian sausage. Also, include a little bit of fruit or fruit juice. Have one slice wonderful whole grain, quinoa, or gluten-free bread. Also, take TIME to eat this meal. Do not rush this or eat walking around!

#12 DRINK WATER, DRINK WATER, DRINK WATER!
Our bodies are mostly water! You need to constantly be replenishing your water with filtered, fresh, spring water. Even if it is difficult for you – you must make yourself. Once you get going, your body will get used to it. Some people have found it useful to drink water at room temperature, other people like to drink ice water, and others put in a little lemon or lime to help. Some people have found great success just simply using a straw! If you don’t drink ANY water, start with 3-4 glasses a day over the next week. Then, each week add one glass of water until you reach 7-8-9-10 – depending on what your body needs, how much you work out, and the weather.

PART #3 – TO BE CONTINUED NEXT WEEK – #13 THROUGH #19 NEXT WEEK
This show was so action packed with great information, feedback, caller questions, and super motivation. Dr. Dave and Yoko need another week to give you next set of awesome getting ready for summer tips! This is a lifestyle and these are changes and modifications you make right now and right away!

CALLER QUESTION OF THE SHOW
Angie Christine wrote in to the show asking about Dr. Dave’s magical 4 miles daily. Dr. Dave believes when you walk 4 miles, especially outside, it will change your life. You feel things happen to your body – you feel stronger, your metabolism gets better, you lose weight, you look better, you feel better, you tighten and tone. Well, Angie wanted to know if you need to do all 4 miles at the same time or can you break it up throughout the day. Dr. Dave’s answer is the best way is the straight 4 miles to get the full benefits from fat burning to stress release. If you absolutely cannot do 4 in a row, then by all means break it up vs. do nothing! But when you can, plan your workouts each day or even on Sunday night for the week – then plan your week around your workouts. ONE hour is only 4% of your day! Don’t you deserve 4% of your day just for YOU! It will make all aspects of your life better as a result too!

TEA OF THE SHOW
Dr. Dave and Yoko are
drinking lovely, sharp, fresh Spot organic white tea on this week’s show. Spot Tea originates from organic tea farmland located in the beautiful Zhejiang Province, South-eastern China. For more information on Spot Tea:   http://www.spotorganic.com/index.html

29 – Nineteen Ways to Get Into Shape For The Summer – Part 1

Slice-Your-Age-PodcastApril 17, 2014 – Episode 29 – Summer is quickly approaching and Dr. Dave reveals ten things (out of nineteen) that  you need to do to get into your best shape ever for this summer. Yoko is on the show and she gives her opinions as well!

MORE INFORMATION FROM THE SHOW #29:
Take a listen to the show. Download it and throw it on your iphone or ipod and listen to on the go in your car or while you are going for a run or walk inside or outside. Live Stronger, Healthier, and Happier!

19 WAYS TO GET IN SHAPE FOR THE SUMMER – PART 1

#1 TAKE CONTROL – WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS
What are your goals? Write them down! Do you want to accomplish this summer? Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to be stronger? Do you want to look good in your bathing suit? Do you want stronger abs? Are you trying to firm up? Do you want to run a 5K at the start of the summer and a 10K at the end of summer? Whatever it is; figure it out; write it down!

#2 KEEP A FOOD DIARY
Keeping a food diary really helps when you are focused on weight loss. In a recent study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, those that were on a weight loss program of any sort, lost twice as much weight as others on the same program. Yoko also had a great idea of also writing down how you are feeling. Your diet could provide clues to how to feel healthier and more energized. This is can make a huge difference in what you are eating or how you are eating when you are aware of what you are putting in your mouth. So many people are not aware of what they are eating or how much as it is just so automatic.

#3 BUY A NEW PAIR OF WORKOUT SHOES
Decide what you want to do and get the matching shoes. You can get walking shoes or running shoes. You need a decent pair of shoes to make your fitness plan a success. Don’t grab any old shoes you have had laying around. Get a nice good pair of shoes from a good running store with a knowledgeable clerk that can fit you properly and get the right shoe for your intended activity. The magic number Dr. Dave has found is 4 miles a day – this could be walking, jogging, running, or a combination. You really need to put in that distance to make a positive and noticeable difference in your life. Listen to how even Dr. Dave got a proper fitting by Bobby Green at Jacksonville Running Company and how he was in the wrong size by 1.5 sizes. More info about this great store: http://www.jacksonvillerunningcompany.

#4 CONTROL YOUR PORTIONS
Throw out those big plates – those big 10-12 inch plates. Switch to your medium 6-9 inch plates. One time, one serving. Yoko also follows a theory where you only eat until you are 80% full so your brain can catch up to know you are full. Yoko also eats slow and takes time with meals and enjoying the company you have and talk a little bit, drink a little bit, eat a little bit and repeat. Dr. Dave admits he needs to slow down more and not eat so fast!

#5 FIT FITNESS IN THROUGHOUT YOUR DAY
There are all these little things you can do all day long to live a healthier fitter life. You can park your car further away in parking lots, you can take the stairs, you can sprint to your mailbox to get the mail! Can you do some squats while loading in the laundry or gardening? Can you do a set of push ups, or a wall sit, or plank for a few minutes?  It is not just planned exercise and going to the gym. Think of what else you can do in little snippets throughout the day to build in more fitness.

#6 MOVE MORE
Some people put on pedometer on their belts or use an app on their phone to track how many steps they take. 10,000 daily steps is the goal to better fitness and health. Dr. Dave also straps on a 40 pound backpack to gain greater health and fitness and get him in good shape for the hiking season. At first 40 pounds seemed like a lot, and now Dr. Dave is used to it!

#7 RUN
Dr. Dave has run for 35 years and Yoko has been running for past 10 years. Yoko and Dr. Dave love to run – from short distances to marathons. Running is amazing and it doesn’t matter how fast or slow you go. It will get you in great shape. You can also do a combination of running and walking alternating it. Dr. Dave and Yoko have a race coming up in May in San Francisco called The Bay to Breakers Sunday May 18th. It is a fun 12K race where people dress up in costumes. If you are going to do this race, be sure to email Dr. Dave so you can connect! More info on this race: http://www.baytobreakers.com

#8 EAT MORE OF THESE FOODS!
Stay away from the junk and the stuff that is just not good for you. Eat more of these foods: almonds, almond butter, fresh fruit, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, bananas, avocado, kale, brussel sprouts, snow peas, black beans, kidney beans, chick peas, all kinds of good vegetables and fruits.

Note: Fruit is not a good night time snack because of the sugar content right before bed. Fruit is a great with breakfast or your mid-morning snack.

Note: Carrots and strawberries are best eaten organic. Eat organic when you can. Some items do not matter organic and some absolutely do. The Environmental Working Group keeps a list the top fruits and veggies that have the most pesticides. It is a great list and site to check out: http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/summary.php.

#9 EAT AND DRINK LESS OF THESE THINGS!
Alcohol is one of the categories we should all really limit. Soft drinks should absolutely be eliminated! It is absolute crap! There is no nutritional value or benefit to soft drinks. Eliminate white bread, white flour, and anything white other than maybe white fish and cauliflower. Chips are not healthy. Sometimes organic corn chips and Dr. Dave and Yoko do eat root and vegetable chips like cassava chips. They enjoy Crisp Root cassava chips and just got 5 more bags: http://www.crisproot.com/faq/.

SHOULD WE GO VEGAN?
Sandy is a guest with Dr. Dave and Yoko today and is a vegan and a vegan expert. Sandy encourages you to google some research on a plant based diet vs. an animal based diet. Sandy is also very moved also by how animals harvested for consumption are treated too. You can also watch a movie on Netflix called “Forks over Knives” to give you some scientific background information on veganism.

ANIMAL TESTING
More and more large companies have stopped doing testing on animals for skin and beauty products. There is an app that you can load onto your phone and then scan the product and see if they do animal testing. More Information: http://www.buycott.com/. Support companies and businesses that have your same values.

COOKING AND EATING
Dr. Dave and Yoko use Olive Oil and Butter for cooking and accenting dishes. Even though butter is not vegan, Dr. Dave thinks that both butter and olive oil are healthy options as part of your diet.

WE TAKE MORE THAN NECESSARY
Sandy sparked a conversation with Dr. Dave and Yoko about how are we taking more than what is necessary on this Earth. This does have a negative impact from buying more than we need, to the choices we make for the environment, and what we wear, and what we eat. Tune in for this interesting conversation.

ANIMAL CONSUMPTION STRESSES THE ENVIRONMENT
Does eating meat take a toll on the environment? Yes it does. Not only all the grains feed to livestock, but the entire energy expended to have livestock and process them for human consumption has quite a toll on our environment. More Information: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/meat-and-environment/

Maybe you eat vegan or vegetarian one day week or you go all out and go vegetarian / vegan for a full 30 days to really try it out?

LISTENER QUESTION OF THE SHOW – DAWN PATRICK
Superfan Dawn had a question for Dr. Dave: “Dr. Dave, I am a late night snacker. What can I do about this?” Dr. Dave said if you must eat at night, make it a good healthy choice. In the month of March this year, we had a record number of UK listeners! Thank you so much for your listens, likes, tweets, and comments!

13 THINGS YOU MUST GIVE UP NOW TO BE HAPPIER

#1  GIVE UP ON CARING WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF YOU
What does it matter what other people think of you? It is your life! You have got to let go of what other people think of you. If you are happy with your life and your choices, be happy

#2  GIVE UP PLEASING EVERYONE
You cannot please everybody and it is not worth trying! If you are pleasing everyone else, you may end up not pleasing you. You cannot live your life for others, your parents, your boss. All to a point, all with boundaries.

#3  GIVE UP PARTICIPATING IN GOSSIP
It is poisonous to talk bad about people and talking behind their back. It is not doing your life any good. When you hear someone gossip, don’t you think they are not happy? If you have this habit, you need to stop this right away.

#4  QUIT WORRYING
How does worrying about something help you? Figure out a solution. What is the problem? What are some ways you can solve this problem? Is it out of your control and there is nothing you can do about it?

#5  GIVE UP YOUR PAST
We all have a past. We all have done things we wish we hadn’t. We cannot go back and change it. It is done and over for it. “Appreciate what happened and the lessons you learned,” said Yoko. It has made you a better person and allowing you to live the life you are living. Also, give up the anger that goes with past issues. Anger is toxic! Listen to Dr. Dave and Yoko talk about letting go of your past and anger on the show.

#6  GIVE UP SPENDING MONEY ON THINGS YOU DON’T NEED
Buying things will not make you truly happy on the inside. These things could be clothes, cars, or houses that you do not need or cannot afford. Buying something may give you a temporary high, but it is not going to create real happiness inside. In fact, if you cannot afford it, now it can add to your stress and worry.

#7  GIVE UP YOUR NEED FOR CONTROL OF OTHER PEOPLE
So many people need they need to be in control of everyone and everything all the time. They want to control their surroundings and even the people in their lives. It will not add to your happiness. Take control of your own life and how you live it.

#8  GIVE UP COMPLAINING
People seem to be complaining 24/7 on social media and in real life! People who complain do not seem to be happy with themselves and their lives. Complaining doesn’t help anything! You have to make the best of things.

#9  GIVE UP YOUR NEED TO IMPRESS OTHERS
So many people try to impress others with flashy clothes and cars. “Impress yourself!” says Yoko. “Have confidence in yourself!” says Dr. Dave. Your self-esteem should not come from things or what others may think about if you have a $600 purse, a $60,000 car, or a $600,000 house. You need to live the life you want and have the things you can afford and within your means.

#10  STOP WORKING TOO HARD
Working hard is respectable, but are you putting off living your life to work around the clock. Are you making enough time for family, relaxation, vacations, travel, and hobbies? Don’t always be working for promises of tomorrow. Tomorrow may never come.

#11  STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS
Why are you comparing yourself to your neighbors or colleagues? There will always be people that have more and always be people who have more. Be grateful and enjoy what you have. Do not have envy for what others have. This resentment can be toxic in your life. Be positive on who you are and what you bring to this world. Listen to Dr. Dave and Yoko talk about how you can change your ideas and beliefs.

#12  STOP IGNORING YOUR BODY’S NEEDS
Your body is telling you all the time what you need. Are you eating well? Are you working out? Do you need rest? Do you need more sleep? You KNOW what you need to do. Stop ignoring what your body is telling you. “You know in your heart what your body is telling you! Listen!”, says Dr. Dave.

#13  STOP GIVING UP ON YOUR DREAMS TOO SOON
Everyone have dreams and goals. If it doesn’t happen right away or fast enough, people often give up on them. Keep working towards them! Never Quit! You can take small steps or big steps, but keep moving forward.

TEA OF THE SHOW
Dr. Dave and Yoko are drinking a very lovely special green tea from their trip to Japan recently. It is 100% Japanese green leaf tea.

ENERGY BAR OF THE SHOW
Dr. Dave tried a new energy bar in Colorado and found one that was great, healthy, gluten-free, no GMOs. It has good protein, tasted fantastic, and gave Dr. Dave good energy while skiing on the slopes this month.  He really enjoyed the the NuGo Dark bar  real dark chocolate and really delicious: http://store.nugonutrition.com/category/dark.html

LISTENER QUESTION OF THE SHOW – PRE-RACE HYDRATION
A listener named PainlessFly on Facebook asked about pre-race hydration. Drink a decent amount of water before an event. We also stay away from alcohol, coffee, and caffeinated beverages before a race. So, it is two parts – hydrate and don’t drink things that will dehydrate you. Also, be sure to re-hydrate after your race too!

26 – What’s So Great About a Marathon?

Slice-Your-Age-PodcastMarch 27, 2014 – Episode 26 – Since this is episode #26, Dave wanted to answer the question “What is so great about a marathon?  (The reason is because a marathon is 26.2 miles!) This is Dave’s last episode from Colorado for the season. He and his wife Yoko answer a great listener’s question and then get into the marathon thing! This is definitely an episode that you will enjoy!

WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT RUNNING A MARATHON?!?

GET STARTED RUNNING – A CHEERLEADER HELPS
Dr. Dave motivated Yoko to start running even though she could not even run one mile! Dr. Dave signed her up for a race. So, Yoko started going outside and running a little bit each day. Dr. Dave always had something nice to say each day no matter how little or how much she ran. It is so great to have a partner and cheerleader on your side to encourage you. Who is your cheerleader? Can you be a cheerleader for someone? Can you be cheerleaders for each other?

YOUR FIRST MARATHON
Can you dedicate a reason for your first marathon? Can you celebrate your 30th or 35th or 40th birthday with a marathon race? Yoko’s first marathon she ran with Dr. Dave in dedication to Dr. Dave’s grandmother who had recently passed away. Listen to Yoko talk about her very first marathon from start to finish and the struggle from mile 20 until the very end. “A marathon is an extremely emotional experience,” says Dr. Dave. After 20 miles, Yoko was crying in her sunglasses and wasn’t sure if she could finish. Listen to her story and see if she finished!

RUNNING MARATHONS CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE
“In my mind, I thought a marathon was impossible,” said Yoko. Once you change your mind and your belief and accomplish such an amazing goal, your body is not only change, but your mind is changed forever. You now have stretched your beliefs to accomplish more than you previous thought you could. Marathons stretch your minds and beliefs! You now start smashing through your disbeliefs and accomplishing more in every area of your life.

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE
It is never too late to start running, to start training, to run your first marathon! Dr. Dave and Yoko see people of all ages and ability on the courses. These people are so inspiring and can even bring you to tears. Your speed doesn’t matter because there will always be faster than you as there will be people slower than you. A marathon is about so much more than running!

BLOG OF THE DAY – LINDSAY SANDERS RUNNING BLOG
“So here I am on the tail end of training for my first marathon. It has been an incredible experience. So much so that I decided to document it in a blog, primarily to remember this time in my life, share it with my son someday, and share it today with friends and family who have supported me through my runs the last two years. Secondarily, if it ever reached anyone else and inspired them in some sort of way that would be the cherry on top of this journey.” ~Lindsay Dr. Dave recommends Lindsay’s blog to be inspired to get running, run a race, even run a marathon. Check it out: http://lindsaysmiles.wordpress.com/

LISTENER QUESTION OF THE DAY – HOW TO DEAL WITH CRAVINGS
Lori writes into the show asking how can she get back on track again to living a more healthier life like she was only 2 years ago. First, get rid of it all! Get it out of your house. Start immediately replacing all the junk and crap with healthier options. Drink more water and more tea. Stop eating sugary non-nutritious foods. Also, all of us have an energy flow to our bodies. If your energy is blocked or in the wrong direction this greatly affects what you eat. Listen to Dr. Dave and his wife Yoko, a registered massage therapist talk about how energy flow is influencing your life! Also, Yoko has a secret way to change your body’s energy; so be sure to listen to their discussion.

Yoko talked about the cycle of the body, especially a woman’s body and particular cravings you can get just right before your period. Many women experiences this 2-4 days before their periods and many women indulge in some sweet or salty things at this time. Consider a variety of healthier options. If you do need to eat ice cream at this time, chose the best ice cream or sweets you can afford or make it yourself. Don’t have any artificial items, colors, or flavors if you do need to indulge.
