71 – The One Thing That is Holding You Back

I believe I have identified the one thing that is holding you back from being in your best shape ever.

Not too long ago, Dr Dave posted this question on his Facebook page, “What is the one thing holding you back from living your best life ever?”

There were a ton of responses and Dr Dave grouped these responses into four different categories. They are:

#1 – You have a “sweet tooth”

Sugar is extremely addicting. Dr Dave recommends completely removing sugar from your diet. There is no nutritional value and sugar may lead to excess weight gain, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. It is not easy to remove sugar from your diet but the best way to do it is to get rid of anything sweet from your home including soft drinks, candy, cakes, etc. Try fruits such as dates in place of sugary sweets. Over time, you will begin to lose the dependency on sugar and you will most likely begin to crave healthy foods like vegetables instead.

#2 – You love to eat

It is ok if you love to eat but that does not mean you have to eat junk. You can eat as much as you want as long as those foods are nutritionally dense and provide your body with the fuel that it needs. Transform your body with healthy foods instead of sugar and other empty calories. Do what you’re most comfortable with but make it as healthy as possible.

#3 – I lack consistency, time, motivation, etc to live healthy

YOU have to be the one to decide that today is the day to make the change. If you are not happy with your weight, appearance, health, whatever it may be, you can change it but you must want it to change. You have to get started and make the time. It will be difficult at first, but does get easier if you stick with it. Start in any way you can. Go outside or get on a treadmill and walk for a few minutes per day or more if possible. You don’t need a gym to get some exercise. Many exercises can be done at home with little to no equipment. If you continue to make excuses, your situation will never improve. Take advantage of any time that you may have. Get out there and do it! And you WILL see results!

#4 – I can’t commit

This is not a resolution – it is a lifestyle! It’s not something you take breaks from or do only on certain days of the week. You must be committed to health every single day. Are you going to do it? Are you going to commit? Your quality of life will improve so much if you make the commitment. Imagine where you could be if you start now? Don’t be the person that procrastinates!

70 – Money – The Silent Killer

In this episode Dr. Dave and Yoko teach you why not being responsible with money will cause stress in your life and ultimately will affect your health and relationships.

What is the silent killer?

Money! When you have stress over finances, it wreaks havoc over your entire body and can negatively affect relationships. People all over the world are plagued with financial problems.

Why devote an entire health show to money?

Money has the potential to completely mess us your health unless you have your finances in order!

8 Steps to Improving Your Finances

#1: Do not spend more than you make – It will catch up with you sooner or later. If you do not have the cash to pay for something, do not buy it. Always try to better yourself and improve your financial resources but do not go into debt for anything. The only possible exception would be the purchase of a primary home, but only if you can afford it. Only use credit cards if you have the ability to pay them off each month in FULL. The average American is in debt. Learning to live within your means will be instrumental in improving your financial situation.

“Don’t be tempted to keep up with the Jones’!”

#2:  Pay off your debts – Make a list of all the debt that you have, smallest to largest. Start by paying off the smallest debt first. Then move on to paying off the next smallest debt you have and continue on. This process may take several years, but the ultimate goal is to eventually pay off all of your debt. How would it feel if you did not have debt? What could you accomplish?

#3: Create a budget – Figure out the total amount of your net income each month (what you bring home). Then make a list of your regular expenses such as mortgage, auto insurance, gas, food, electric, etc. Determine what/if any is left over. The remaining funds can be allocated to investments and savings.

#4: Have an emergency fund – Life happens! Have a cash emergency fund equivalent to six months of your income. An emergency fund will be useful in the event of situations such as illness or loss of a job. It may take some time to build your emergency fund however it is critical to financial stability.

#5: Set up a retirement plan – Compound interest is your friend! If you start early enough and participate in a 401K or IRA plan, it is possible to have a sizeable nest egg before retirement. However it’s never too late to start! Something is better than nothing.

#6: Find a good financial planner/advisor – Find a good fee-based financial planner to assist with your financial goals.

#7: Have a life insurance policy in place – It is wise to have a term life insurance policy in place long before retirement is considered. This will cover your burial expenses and alleviate some financial responsibility for your loved ones.

#8: Have a will or irrevocable trust in place – Only 30% of US adults have a will. Create one that is comprehensive and regularly update it. It is best to use a professional estate attorney but there are also many online resources that can get you started. Without a will in place, your estate (any property that you own) will be handled by a probate court and they will determine how your assets are allocated. Therefore it is better to have a will so that you have a say in how your assets are distributed.

69 – The First Step Is The Most Important!

A listener asks Dr. Dave what his first step should be after not having treated his body with respect for over fifty years. He had a lot of guesses but none of them were right. In this episode, Dr. Dave and Yoko reveal not only the first step, but nine more!

Facebook Question from fan David Levine – I am beginning to roll back almost 50 years of bad eating, alcohol, caffeine, and almost no aerobic exercise. I am type 2 diabetic but not overweight. What should be my first step to getting healthy? I believe it should be easy, impactful, and something that I will be able to see results from quickly.

10 Baby Steps to To Get Back In Shape

Step #1: Decide that you are ready to make a change – You must decide that you are ready to change and commit to that change. Write your commitments down. Dr. Dave suggests creating a vision board. Post photos and other information about your goals in a conspicuous place. It works! If you visualize yourself a certain way, see it every single day, it’s going to work. What do you want your weight to be? What type of return do you want on your investments?

Step #2: Eliminate all desserts & soft drinks – You can do it! It’s a baby step but if you eliminate all desserts and soft drinks you will see some changes take place. Caffeine is not good for your body. Eliminate all food and beverages

Step #3: Move Your Body – You don’t have to run a marathon or triathalon but exercise such as walking is great to begin on your journey towards health. Start out small and work your way up to, what we call The Magic 4. If you can walk 4 miles per day, you will begin to see tremendous changes. It is a miracle what happens to your body when you walk on a regular basis.

Step #4: Cut Down on Portions – Don’t fill up large plates or go back for seconds. Use a smaller size plate for meals whenever possible. Dr. Dave & Yoko have found that since beginning a plant based non-processed diet, they are able to eat larger portions of food while easily maintaining their weight. A definite plus to being vegan! When you go plant based you will begin looking better and feeling better.

Step #5: Strength Building – Gym memberships aren’t necessary. There are tons of strength training exercises that can be done at home. Exercises like sit up, crunches, curls, squats, lunges, and pull-ups are extremely effective. Pull-ups are an excellent exercise – they work out your back, arms, and core. Another very effective exercise is a plank. Lay on the floor in a push-up position and hold the position for at least a minute and work your way up.

Step #6: Shop Smarter – Most of the products in a typical grocery store is junk food. Locate a natural foods store in your area. There are several chains and even some great local Mom & Pop stores. Do your best to cut out all processed food, even oils which are full of hidden calories and fat and do not offer much nutrition. You will also find that another positive side effect of this diet is that you will have a boost to your immune system which helps to prevent illness. Dr. Dave & Yoko also love to “juice” each morning. Purchase organic fruits and vegetables such as collard greens, celery, carrots, spinach, char, ginger, apples, and blueberries and blend for a vitamin packed snack.

Step #7: Cut Down On Alcohol – Less is more. Alcohol is full of empty calories. Drink alcohol at little as possible but cutting it out completely will make a huge difference especially if your goal is to lose weight.

Step #8: Enter A Challenging Event – Entering an event almost forces to train for the event and complete it. It doesn’t have to be a long event but should be something that will be a challenge for you.

Step #9: Yoga, Stretching, & Meditation – It’s a game changer! If you can’t devote 20 minutes or more to this, try a few 5 minute sessions a day. Meditation is wonderful exercise for your brain. Be mindful of your surroundings and your body. When you do this you are better able to take care of yourself.

To learn more about the yoga and meditation, please check out a few of our previous episodes!

How Meditation Can Change Your Life

Step #10: Incorporate Cross Training in Your Routine – Load up a back-pack with weight and use it when hiking or walking up and down stairs. You may also try kayaking, bicycling, running. When you keep yourself engaged and excited about working out.

These steps may take a while to complete. Don’t try to complete everything on this list on Day 1. Take your time and move through them at a pace in which you are comfortable.

68 – Proof! Being Weird Helps You Live Longer and Happier

Our guest Jason Siemer returns with proof that living weird can help us in ways we never thought before. Are you in? Then please do not miss this episode!

Remember, you are never alone! Dr. Dave is here to make sure YOU live your best life possible! If you need anything at all please email Dr. Dave at sliceyourage@gmail.com.

Today’s special guest is Jason Siemer. He was our guest about a year on a segment titled How Being Weird Can Keep You Young. It ended up being one of our most popular episodes. One year later he’s back to talk about how being weird can help you live longer and happier!

Jason is one of the happiest people that Dr. Dave knows. Jason is the type of person that doesn’t follow the norms of society and instead does what he wants to do because it makes him happy.

It is a lifestyle that most people don’t live, in other words, weird. Dr. Dave and Jason like being labeled as weird because it means that they are living outside of the norm. Or, they aren’t doing what everyone else is doing just because everyone else is doing it. What some would think of as weird or abnormal, is normal to others. It all depends upon your own perception of how you live. Everyone has a different perspective in life.

Jason’s Story

Jason is a great example of someone who lives a “weird” life. Jason walked away from past employment opportunities because he knew he wanted to do things differently. He now owns his own successful video production company and plays in a band. Jason says that ultimately it’s about living life on your own terms. If you feel as if your life is not going in the way that you planned, then it’s ok to step out of your comfort zone. It can be scary to do but it’s necessary to make changes in your life in order to achieve happiness.

“It’s about being honest with yourself and with other people so that you can break through barriers to put yourself in a better situation.” – Jason

It’s a proven fact that when you are less stressed you feel healthier and happier. And if you are healthier and happier you will live longer, you will feel better, and your body won’t be as susceptible to disease.

If you accept your current situation as the norm and become complacent about it, chances are you won’t be happy and won’t feel good about yourself. You DO have the power to change your life. Always reflect on yourself and try to determine what you can do to become “better”. What is toxic in your life? What is not working?

Jason’s Relationship Advice

This past summer Jason went through a situation where he felt he needed to make a change in his life. In the past, Jason has been resistant to relationships because it was difficult for him to put himself in a situation where he would be vulnerable to someone else. Over the summer, Jason changed his way of thinking and began a relationship. However Jason found himself in a situation where he was not happy. After 4 months, he made the choice to end the relationship. We tend to ignore the red flags that we see at the beginning of the relationship. It is possible for a person to change but it takes a lot of work. Both parties have to be willing to commit to changing and making the relationship work. Take note of the reasons why your previous partners/relationships were making you unhappy. Make it mandatory that those characteristics not be repeated in any future partners/relationships. You will continue to be unhappy if you carry on the same relationship pattern.

Our Advice

Many people do things in their lives because other people think they should be doing them. Find something for you that makes you happy. Don’t rely on others or other things to make you happy. When you find yourself feeling stressed, put the situation into perspective. You don’t have to let the situations that are outside of your control, dictate your emotions and your happiness.

Do things that you truly love in life! Spend time with people that you enjoy! Surround yourself with people that make you a better person. Learning how to say “No” is a life changer. Don’t put yourself in social situations or relationships in which you do not want to be involved. Know what’s best for yourself and live the life you want to live today.

Challenge

I challenge every listener to pick one thing in your life that you want to change. It can be a relationship, a job, your health, really anything. Create a plan and figure out ways to improve. Do it now!

Listen to This Quickie in Moderation!

Here is what the problem is when someone says “It’s ok to eat this in moderation.” It’s actually a big problem!!!

Many people think that consuming foods that aren’t healthy is ok as long as it’s in moderation. This logic is flawed. While eating unhealthy foods in moderation does limit your exposure to fats and sugars, they are still harmful to your body. Why would you want to do something that is not good for you, even if it is in moderation? Our bodies are valuable; therefore, you should be very careful about what you put into it. Rethink your definition of the word “moderation”!

67 – Sad or Depressed in the Winter? Try This!

If you ever feel sad, depressed or just plain out of it in the winter months when the days are shorter and it’s cold outside, this episode is for you! Dr. Dave gives you some of his tips to reverse this.

Many people report symptoms of depression or complain of feeling out of sorts during the cold winter months. Some are even diagnosed with a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.).

Thanks to listener Happy Man from the United Kingdom for today’s great podcast topic!

How do I fight seasonal depression or SAD?

Tip #1: Exercise: When your body is moving you increase the number of endorphins in your body which will help to elevate your mood. Yes! It may be difficult to get up and get moving when it is cold and dreary outside but if you make the effort it will be worth it. If you are planning to exercise outside, be sure to dress for the weather. It is important to wear layers (which can be removed as your body warms) and be sure to cover your head. It is also a good idea to wear some type of reflective clothing so that drivers on the road can easily see you. If exercising outside is not your thing, try using a treadmill at home. It does not need to be the most expensive treadmill. You can find them used for pennies of the dollar on sites such as Craigslist and local online sale groups. You can also purchase a low cost pull up bar for about $10-$15. When pull ups are done correctly they are an amazing way to burn calories and work the muscles. Other exercises such as push ups and crunches are also very effective.

Tip #2: Supplements: Dr. Dave does not recommend taking too many supplements but a daily dose of Vitamin D3 may be helpful to improve your mood. Dr Dave currently takes a dosage of 2000 iu but you will want to read the packaging and make sure that you are taking the correct dosage for you. Dr Dave also takes an Omega DHA supplement (vegan mega DHA supplements use algae instead of fish oil) and a Vegan Multivitamin. Both of the supplements that Dr. Dave takes are made by a company named Deva. Discuss any supplements with your physician before beginning any programs.

Tip #3: Eating: Make an effort to eat a wide range of vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, legumes, grains, etc. The more color on your plate the better off you will be. Limit packaged foods and try to stick with whole foods which are low in (or absent of) sugar, oil, or salt. Be sure to get all the calories you need so that you feel full and energetic throughout the day.

Tip #4: Light therapy: Dr Dave has never used light therapy and does not have a lot of experience with it however it may be beneficial for those suffering from S.A.D. Speak with your physician or research through reputable sources before trying any new therapies.

Tip #5: Do what you love: One of the most effective ways to get through seasonal depression is to love what you do! If you are in a job, or studying something at school, or in a relationship that makes you unhappy then you have to change something. Because if you don’t, things will begin happening in your life. Your stress will increase which may lead to health issues including depression. If you love what you are doing then it doesn’t matter if it’s cold outside or the days are shorter. You will be excited to get up and get going every day! Look into your heart and soul today and decide if you love your life. If not, make some changes and I promise you will begin to feel better.

Thanks again to Happy Man for their question! If you have a question that you would like Dr. Dave to answer, please send them in to www.facebook.com/sliceyourage or to sliceyourage@gmail.com.

66 – The Top Five Regrets of the Dying – Do Not Let These Happen to You!

Bronnie Ware, an Australian nurse spent several years caring for patients in the final weeks of their lives. She recorded their dying epiphanies and put her observations into a book called “The Top Five Regrets of the Dying.” In this episode, Dr. Dave and Yoko reveal what these regrets are and teach you how to avoid EVER saying that you had these regrets!

THE TOP 5 REGRETS OF THE DYING

1) I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself and not what other people expected of me. There are many people out there that are living a life that their parents want them to live, their friends want them to live, society wants them to live, etc. There are times in our lives where we tend to “go with the program” just because it is the way it has always been done. Decide to live your life the way you want to and not how everyone else wants you to. Being true to yourself is not being selfish. Live the life you want to live!

2) I wish I hadn’t worked so hard. Every male patient surveyed by the author admitted to this regret. These days both men and women are working so hard that they are missing important milestones in their loved ones lives. Maybe they missed their kid’s growing up or missed having a stronger relationship with their spouse. This doesn’t mean to quit your job tomorrow but instead to make an effort to allow yourself the time to be with loved ones. Many time we work ourselves very hard so that we can achieve status symbols that we think will make us happy. But do you really need to have the biggest house or the newest car? It is great to have a strong work ethic and to work hard but it is easy to lose focus on your priorities.

3) I wish I had the courage to express my feelings. Many people suppress their feelings in order to keep peace with others. Not being true to yourself is very dangerous and can lead to stress and stress related health issue. Don’t be afraid to say what you mean and mean what you say. Don’t go out of your way to hurt other people’s feelings but be sure to speak up for yourself in a truthful way.

4) I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. The patients surveyed would not always realize the benefits of old friends until their last weeks and often it was difficult to track them down. Sometimes people can become so caught up in their lives they let “golden” friendships slip by over the years. Make an effort to stay in close touch with your friends even if it’s through an occasional email message or card. Life should never be too busy to stay in touch with your friends. Don’t let too much time go by before reaching out to them.

5) I wish that I had let myself be happier. Most people do not realize until it’s too late that happiness is a choice. They stay stuck in old patterns simply because of the fear of change. The believed they were content but deep within but they desired to live properly and once again truly enjoy themselves. If you are in that situation, stop faking it and living a false life. Make a change and truly be happy. Remember to believe in yourself. You are special!

ASSIGNMENT

Your assignment right now is to write down at least one regret that you have. Once you do that, figure out a way to make the change so that you no longer have that regret.

65 – How to Make This Your Best Year Ever!

In this episode Dr. Dave and Yoko talk about the absolute most important life changing things you MUST be doing to make this year your BEST EVER!

THIS IS MY BEST YEAR EVER!
Decide right now that 2015 is going to be your best year ever! Write this down and put it in your wallet or purse. Write and put on your bathroom mirror and your fridge. Write it, Read it, Say it, BELIEVE IT!

A YEAR IN REVIEW 2014
Review your 2014. What were your success? What are you grateful for? What was all of the good, great, and wonderful that happened? Did you make goals for 2014? Did you accomplish any of those goals by the year’s end?

MOVE MORE IN 2015
You have to move your body daily. You have to move on a regular basis. 4 miles are magic! Get out there and start walking. Walk any pace, inside or out. “Make time for your body and your life!” says Dr. Dave.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TEETH BRUSHING TIME
Do as Dr. Dave’s wife, Yoko, does! She does squats and lunges whenever she is brushing her teeth. You know you need to brush your teeth 2-3 times a day so do double duty!

DON’T EAT ANY JUNK!
“Cut the crap out of your diet! Starting Today!” instructs Dr. Dave. You know what the crap is: the cookies, cakes, candies, etc. The junk has no nutritive value and in fact takes good healthy nutrients and energy to just be processed through your body. Cut out all the sugary sweetened items.

WHAT DO YOU DRINK?
Drink as much water as you can. Get on the veggie juicing bandwagon. Google for some videos and recipes about vegetable juicing. Get some tea in your life like green tea or chamomile. Think about what you drink.

MEDITATION WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE
Start today! Meditation will help you to relaxed and be more focused. Listen to Dr. Dave walk you through getting started with meditation on this episode. A great book to get you started on meditation is: Meditation for Beginners by Sarah Elliott Price on the Kindle.

NATURE IS MEDITATIVE
Getting in touch with nature and the plants is meditation. It is awesome nature therapy. You could be walking or running in snow; or even shoveling it (one of Yoko’s favorite activities in the winter). Get in touch with nature everyday in some way. Stop rushing from house to car to work and back again. Step into nature and feel its awesome power!

LOVE THE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE
Spend time and MORE time with the people (and animals) in your life that are good, positive, and healthy for you. Stop being around the negative people that are literally draining your life away. It is your life and do not sacrifice your happiness.

HAPPINESS COMES FROM YOU
Shine your light and happiness to the world and those that you love. Feel this happiness inside of you. If you need to change something or someone in your life – do it now! Or make a plan of action to do it soon! This is YOUR life and you need to live it in a way that you are happy in who you are with and what you do. Make 2015 your best year ever!

Setbacks – How to Deal With Them – QUICKIE

Everyone has setbacks. No one is immune. Here is exactly what to do when you have one.  Note: change in schedule – regular length episodes will now be released every Monday!!!  See you then!

64 – How to MEND Yourself! – Victoria Moran – Part 2

This is our second episode featuring author Victoria Moran. Today she discusses how you can “MEND” yourself to your best life ever. Another must listen!

ARE YOU EXISTING; NOT REALLY LIVING?
So many people are just going through the motions day by day. They say they have no time for fun or even taking care of their health. If you are not happy and do not have your health; you are not living! This is your life and you get one chance to live it. Guess what? No matter what life

M.E.N.D. YOUR LIFE!
Victoria’s MEND program = Meditation + Exercise + Nourishment + Detoxification

MEDITATION
Focus on what is within. Study after study PROVES that people who meditate have healthier lives! 20 minutes of meditation in the morning after you wake up and 20 minutes after your workday before your evening starts are the best times to meditate daily. Dr. Dave uses the Insight Timer on his phone to help him with his daily morning meditations. Learn more here: https://insighttimer.com/.

Listen to Victoria talk about one of her favorite studies about meditation that showed that those who had meditated daily for 5 years in a row; actually had the health of someone 12 years younger! Wowza!

EXERCISE
“Start your day by taking care of ME!” says Victoria, “think about ME in the morning and it is NOT selfish! If you are blessed with the ability to move and you do not; it is a tragedy.” Cardio gives you the endurance to live your live better; Weight training gives you the strength to live your life better; Flexibility gives you the mobility to live your life better. Listen to how little Victoria took on Goliath in the park!

NOURISHMENT
“We want to nourish ourselves in every possible way,” says Victoria. This could be your food, your juice, your home, your bedroom, or even the people you have in your life. “Aging Magnificently” is a phrase that Victoria has come to love.

Juicing is so amazing for your health. Juicing fruits and vegetables infuses your body with fantastic nutrition. It is energy and the life force rushing through your body. In 2015, make it a point to get a juicer and have a daily glass of green veggie & fruit juice. Listen to Victoria and Dave talk about juicing and smoothies.

Another fantastic thing you can do for yourself each day is to have a salad filled with fresh in season vegetables.

DRINK WARM LEMON WATER FIRST THING IN THE MORNING
Drink a glass of warm water with lemon in the morning for detox benefits. “It also facilitates a morning bowel movement, which is so important to health,” says Victoria.

TONGUE SCRAPING IS AMAZING FOR YOUR HEALTH
Scraping your tongue 12 times with each morning with a stainless steel tongue scraper is a common health practice. It removes toxins and bad bacteria and is amazing for your breath. Add this to your dental routine along with brushing and flossing daily.

DO NOT USE TOXIC FACE AND BODY PRODUCTS
Learn about what you are putting on your face and body. There are so many good and healthy choices. There is a great website called The Environmental Working Group that can tell you all about these body products, what is in them, and how they were tested. “The Environmental Working Group is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment. Our mission is to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment” excerpt from: http://www.ewg.org/about-us

LIVING IN PEACEFUL SURROUNDINGS
Is your home peaceful? Is it full of clutter? Is simple and organized? Have you painted it in colors that you enjoy and soothe you? Take a look around your home. Take time to de-clutter it and release unwanted and unneeded items. Take them to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army store to benefit people in need. Keep only what you love and cherish. Also take time to decorate with art, photos, flowers, and colors that you love and make you feel good every time you look at them.

63 – Victoria Moran – The Main Street Vegan

This is a MUST LISTEN episode! Our guest Victoria Moran talks about her book, her life, and gives us an incredible number of lifestyle tips that can be used by anyone – vegan, vegan curious or just plain omnivore! Have a listen!

SAVE AN ANIMAL TODAY!
“When you can look at an animal in the eye and know you saved them,” that makes an tremendous impact on you says Victoria Moran. “I do this for the animals pure and simple, however, I also am vegan for my health.”

ARE YOU A HEALTH VEGAN OR AN ANIMAL VEGAN?
Those who are vegan because of their love of animals, will not make exception and not be vegan “sometimes” or occasionally. Those who are vegan for health reasons will make exceptions and “sometimes” eat meat.

BUT I EAT LOCALLY SOURCED HUMANE MEAT?
There is not humane meat because an animal was killed. It doesn’t matter if they were free range or grass fed, they were killed for you to consume them. We do not need animals in our diets to live or even live will. You are NOT compromising your health by being meat-free.

GREENS AND JUICING
“We used to eat a lot of brown foods like brown rice, brown granola, brown breads. However, when you start to eat more bright, fresh, colorful foods; you will feel like a million bucks,” says Victoria.

ORGANIC IS NOT ELITIST
Some people thing organic is for the rich and elite. This is simply not true. This is an investment in your body. You only have one life and one body. This is a matter of priorities. If you value your health and your life; organic is a choice, the choice. “Buy organic as often as you can!” says Victoria.

Organic is not genetically modified and not sprayed with chemicals. The soil organic produce grows in is nourished and crops are rotated and gives you the best quality produce. It has even been proven that they are even scientifically higher nutrients.

WHAT IS A VEGAN ACADEMY?
“This is an intense intensive starting with opening classes and dinner the first evening of the course, then going all day for the next four days, and until early afternoon on the final day. There will be breaks for meals and personal time, of course.

A high point of the Main Street Vegan® experience is always the educational field trips to a raw vegan emporium, an eco-store, an Indian spice market, vegan bakery, leather-free shoe store, and to the Vaute Couture boutique where, when she’s in town, we get a fabulous presentation and Q & A from founder/designer Leanne Hilgart.

We’ll have lunch out together on field trip day at a classic NYC vegan eatery, and an optional post-session graduation luncheon at another of NYC’s noteworthy vegan restaurants.

If some special vegan or animal rights event is taking place in the city during your course, we try to arrange for our students to be part of this, as well.” (excerpt from website & learn more: http://mainstreetvegan.net/academy/)

Year End Motivation Quickie

Dr. Dave has a great inspirational message for you today. It’s short but could be life changing!

62 – “Chocolate Yoga” for Stress and Weight Management

What does our guest Margaret Chester mean when she teaches how “Chocolate Yoga” not only helps with stress and weight management, but nurtures the mind, body and spirit as well?

YOGA IS AMAZING
“Yoga is pure pleasure that connects your body and mind,” says guest Margaret Chester, “I want to live a fantastic flowing life.” Everyone needs some yoga or a lot of yoga in their lives. Yoga isn’t about standing on your head; it is about standing on your own two feet. Listen to Margaret walk you through some yoga moves on the show today.

ARE YOU BREATHING?
Clench your fists right now. Notice something? You are not breathing when you are clenching your fists. Do you ever feel like this under stress? Not breathing does not help with stress. “Inhale.Pause.Exhale.Pause. Repeat” says Margaret “Mindfully breathe with pauses.”

START WITH A SMILE
A smile changes everything. Your smile warms the world and draws people in. Smiling makes everything better and is infectious in a good way!

BE MINDFUL NOT MINDLESS
Are you getting from Point A to Point B on autopilot? Be mindful in every moment. You can do so many wonderful things on our commute in the car. You can enjoy the sights, you can listen to music, you can do a yoga chant.

FIVE THINGS MARGARET HAS LEARNED:
1. Stress is here to stay. Learn to deal with it.
2. Diets don’t work unless you address your stress issues.
3. Yoga postures are only the tip of the iceberg. Yoga is much deeper.
Practicing yoga will help you manage your stress and weight issues for the rest of your life.
4. Health, wealth, and happiness are created and nurtured from within.
5. There are many paths up the mountain. Find what works for you. When you get to the top of the mountain: keep climbing.

GUEST INFORMATION: “Margaret Chester, MPH, RYT, had always wanted to be a yoga teacher, but thought she couldn’t teach until she was skinny and could get her foot behind her head! After years of struggling with her stress and weight issues, she has found a way to survive and thrive by practicing Chocolate Yoga. She is currently teaching workshops and working on her next book. “ (excerpt from her website)

61 – Nutrition and More – The Second Step – With Sarah Stanley

Part two of a two episode series with ultra-marathoner, entrepreneur and wellness educator Sarah Stanley! This week we discuss eating, nutrition, the environment, and what is really important in your life for optimal health. If you didn’t listen to last week’s episode with Sarah and I; listen right before or right after this one! https://www.davidmadow.com/60-achieving-happiness-in-your-life-the-first-step-with-sarah-stanley-2/

PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES
“Plastic water bottles are on the top of the list of things that make me cringe!” says Sarah Stanley,”Tap water is safer and cleaner than bottled water!” Sarah recommends and loves Liberty BottleWorks, who sells recycled custom unique aluminum water bottles based out of Washington State. Here is their website: http://www.libertybottles.com/

TAPPED – DOCUMENTARY ABOUT WATER BOTTLES
Sarah highly recommends watching an amazing documentary abuot the bottled water industry called Tapped. “Tapped examines the role of the bottled water industry and its effects on our health, climate change, pollution, and our reliance on oil. The documentary is well structured and presents an overwhelming amount of evidence which will change the way anyone thinks about bottled and municipal water.”

“Both the “manufacture” of the water itself, and also where the bottles come from, where they go after use and how they influence our lives while they’re with us. The willful absence of major companies such as Coke, Pepsi and Nestle is extremely telling in light of all the material presented.
One can only hope that the small voice of this film will be heard over the huge booming commercial machine that these and other companies represent in the popular media. If you haven’t seen this movie, simply watch it. It’s that good and the information is something everyone should know.”

http://www.tappedthemovie.com/

HEALTHY SOIL TO GROW YOUR FOOD
“Our soil is so stripped it is literally dead soil, producing “dead” food, killing people,” says Sarah. Organic farmers don’t use chemicals and pesticides and use natural methods for weeds like pulling them with your hands. “It takes blood, sweat, and tears to toil in the field to produce this healthy nutritious organic food,” says Sarah who talks about her first hand experience working on an organic farm. Organic Farmers take care and nourish the soil and rotate crops appropriately. Organic food is worth every penny of expense vs. the expense of dying and disease. Dr. Dave says, “organic food is the best health insurance!”

GMO – GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS / FOOD
Listen to Sarah and Dave talk about the horrifying negative impact of GMOs on your life and health. 80% of food in a typical grocery store has been modified and not in a good way! Sarah says, “Buy the UGLY FOOD!”; the uglier the better! Organic produce doesn’t look perfect and shouldn’t. Sarah has a lot of content about this topic on her website: http://sarahstanleyinspired.com/ Be sure to check it out!

GET BACK TO NATURAL
“Society is unhappy with this push for things looking “perfect” from food to bodies. Don’t cheat with surgeries and injecting dyes in your foods!” says Sarah. “This is a horrible combination of perfectionism and convenience without thinking of the repercussions on ourselves, society, and the earth!” she says.

MORE VEGGIES
Veggies for breakfast = Yes! Veggies for lunch = Yes! Veggies for dinner = Yes! Veggies for snacking = Yes! You need more veggies in your life. You need to start with ADDING fresh organic vegetables to each and every major meal you consume. It may seem weird to have veggies for breakfast, but you absolutely don’t need to stick to the regular/normally know “breakfast foods”.

sarah-stanley-guest-on-show-yoga-pose-david-madow-slice-your-age-podcastGUEST INFORMATION: “Sarah Stanley’s goal in life is for people to “live free” – in health and life. Sarah is a lifelong entrepreneur and health/fitness/good cause advocate. An inspiration to many, Sarah is a passionate advocate for being active, healthy, and happy. Sarah is a plant-based ultra endurance athlete and educates others on health misconceptions, the importance of eating real food, food label and ingredient education, breaking popular healthy myths, and an organic activist. 60 – Achieving Happiness in Your Life – The First Step – With Sarah Stanley

Part one of a two episode series with ultra-marathoner, entrepreneur and wellness educator Sarah Stanley! This week we discuss happiness and what is really important in your life for optimal health.

HAPPINESS
Both Dr. Dave and Sarah believe in starting with happiness on your health journey. Guest Sarah loves two particular quotes: “Happiness is an inside job” + “You are what you eat, drink, and think” says Sarah. “Don’t miss the headspace. You need to not have negativity in your mind to live a good life and find happiness.” says Sarah.

LIVE FREE
Sarah’s goal is for people to “live free” in their eating, their thinking, living their lives, their health. “This is your life! Make decisions based upon you and your life!” says Dr. Dave.

ARE YOU IN SOMETHING NOT WORKING OR HEALTHY FOR YOU?
Are you in a job or relationship or situation you know in your heart that is not working for you or good for you? Be brave and courageous and make the changes you need to make. This is your life! Make the best decisions for you!

LISTEN TO SARAH’S PERSONAL JOURNEY AND STORY
Sarah has had quite a journey and experienced heartache. It does get better and she is glad that it had ended, but she couldn’t see it at the time or immediately following the shocking ending. “I am loveable and I am worthy of love” were two of her mantras as she worked her way through her sadness and struggle.

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE LIVING IS COMPLETE CRAP!
“That is the most selfish quote I have ever heard”, says Sarah. “Your actions and choices impact everyone and for generations!” This whole live now and don’t worry about the impact or consequences of anything from the chocolate bar or cup of coffee you are buying to overeating and binge drinking is horrible and selfish way to live.

CUT OUT THE CRAP
Do not keep polluting your mind with bad negative hurtful music, televisions, and magazines. Cut these out of your life! Do not fill your mind with crap!

SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO BE THROWN INTO A NEW DIRECTION
Sometimes you absolutely need to go through rough experiences that literally throws you in a new direction. And guess what? Sometimes it really really hurts. This is just what some of us need to actually make the necessary changes in our lives that need to happen. “Tough times make us a strong person and builds our character and values,” says Sarah.

GET CONNECTED TO YOUR FOOD, DRINKS, AND THE EARTH
Learn where your food comes from and how it got on your plate. Stay connected to its origins. Where does your coffee and chocolate come from? Who harvested it and was it done in a fair trade humane way? Stay connected to this earth and nature and its people.

A Quickie – Forgiveness

Dr. Dave has an incredible forgiveness story to share with you today. This is powerful!

59 – How to Stay Healthy for the Holidays

In this episode Dr. Dave gives you some of his favorite tips for staying healthy and keeping your sanity over the holiday season! Don’t gain that holiday weight! Keep healthy throughout the holidays.

PARTY INVITATIONS – ACCEPT OR DECLINE
You do not have to accept every single holiday invitation you get. Choose the parties you want to go to based upon the people that will be there. You are not obliged to go any party for any reason. Start with deciding and choosing which parties you want to attend. Sometimes, you just need to say no. Need help saying NO? We did a whole show on the how and why to say NO: https://www.davidmadow.com/53-the-word-no-will-change-your-life/

EAT BEFORE YOU GO TO THE PARTY
Many times you may not know what will be served at a holiday party. Often many of the holiday type of treats and foods are not healthy. Your best bet is not go to these parties hungry. Eat a good solid healthy meal before heading out the door. You are going to the parties for the people, not the food!

DO YOU KNOW WHAT WILL BE SERVED AT THE EVENT?
Call the host and find out what is being served. Tell them you are on a special diet with some restrictions. You don’t want them to worry about what you can eat. You can bring your own food if they don’t have items on your list of foods you eat.

BRING YOUR OWN FOOD
You may just need to bring your own food and snacks! It could be nuts, crackers, veggies, a smoothie, etc. A few of my favorites are Justin’s Peanut Butter http://justins.com/ and Lydia’s crackers
http://lydiasorganics.com/.

LIMIT OR SKIP THE ALCOHOL
First, never drink and drive and always plan for designated driver. Second, you don’t have to drink at any or all of your holiday parties. Bring your own beverage or just get some more water in your diet that day. You may just want to limit yourself to a small tasting of a particular wine. There is no need or obligation to have alcohol at any holiday event.

REMEMBER TO EXERCISE
Keep getting those “Magic 4 Miles” in each day. Don’t get too busy to put yourself on the calendar. If the weather is really bad, you may have to hop on the treadmill. You can keep doing your at home workouts of pull-ups, squats, planks, and more.

START WORKING ON YOUR NEW YEAR’S GOALS
“80-90% of New Year’s Resolutions are broken or forgotten before January of each year is done,” says Dr. Dave. A New Year’s Goal is what you want to accomplish and focus on for the year! It is not something to do for a day or two or week or two. These are GOALS for the year.

Be sure to carry a copy of these goals with you to make sure you read them every day and often. You work on these goals until they come true! Also put a copy or photographs representing your goals on your vision board.

HOLIDAY GIFTS ARE OUT OF CONTROL
Do not overspend on friends, family, co-workers, and loved ones. “Gifts do not mean Love. Love is Love. Love is not things!”, says Dr. Dave. “Please do not spend beyond your means!” Dr. Dave pleads. The stress of putting things on credit cards you cannot afford is far greater than the reward of any gift you could give to any person in your life. Make this the year to not going into debt for holiday gift giving!

TAKE EXTRA HOLIDAY MONEY AND PUT IN YOUR INVESTMENTS
How about a more modest gift giving plan this year? If you have any surplus money, then put that chunk in your investments for your retirement or your kid’s future college education.

DON’T DO BLACK FRIDAY!
Black Friday is absolute madness! It creates this frenzy of buying and people end up buying so much they don’t want or need. It is best to plan your buying and spending instead of getting lured in with deals for things that are not on your list.

How to Bring Happiness and Focus to Your Life in 15 Minutes a Day – Without Diet, Work or Exercise!

There’s plenty of info in my blog about making long-term, fundamental changes that will undoubtedly improve your health and general quality of life. But most of these transformations take a moderate amount of planning and willpower to execute. The following recommendation does not. Ready? Here it is:

Meditation.

I was hesitant to put the word “meditation” in the title because it’s so quickly dismissed as feel-good, overly-spiritual pseudoscience.

woman meditating

I don’t use meditation as a path toward “enlightenment,” nor do I use it as a vehicle under the umbrella of any religion. I use it as a practical tool that helps me – a normal guy with a job, a family, responsibilities, and not enough time – lead a happier, more productive life.

Meditation has been scientifically proven to reduce stress by putting the brakes on the production of cortisol, a hormone that gets secreted whenever we feel anxiety, panic, fear or exhilaration. Cortisol is designed to be released in bursts when we need instant energy now – like when a tiger jumps out from behind a bush, or when a dump truck jumps out into the intersection.

However, our modern lifestyle and all its stress sources (kids, finances, traffic, relationships, work, etc.) tend to give us a low, constant drip of cortisol instead of just releasing little spurts every once in a while when needed. This impairs everything from our decision-making skills to our metabolism to our sleep cycles.

Meditation gives us the power to neutralize this drip and feel focused and empowered in our lives.

If you’re new to meditation, I urge you to just try it once. If you absolutely hate it, at least you can say you’ve tried. But stick with it, and you’ll be surprised at the clarity, direction and mental strength that meditation provides.

Here’s how to do it (it’s easier than you think, promise):

  1. Sit in a quiet place where you feel comfortable, either sitting or reclining.
  2. Set a countdown timer on your watch or phone for 15 to 20 minutes. (I love the free app Insight Timer, but any countdown clock will do. I like to have an audio alarm at the end of my session so I’m not wondering in the back of my head how long I have left.)
  3. After setting your timer, just try to relax and be still. In the first minute or so, you’ll probably have to swallow saliva or scratch an itch as you habituate to meditating. That’s fine. Adjust to your surroundings and your body. You can either close your eyes or leave them open – your call.
  4. Here’s the hardest part, and the bulk of the meditation. Clear your mind. Try to be thoughtless and idle. Note how I said try. It’s hard not to think at all, and takes some training. Some people get it right away; other need a little more practice.
  5. Ding! Time’s up, you’re done!

Some people recommend concentrating on your own breathing – deeply in and smoothly out – to get in the meditative groove. Others like to recite a chant called a mantra. “Om” is a popular one, said to be the “sound of the universe” in Hinduism, though I like to just let my mind sit idly and drift.

Invariably, thoughts will pop into your head, and you’ll automatically chastise yourself for thinking. And then you’ll realize that your chastising is a thought too, and you’ll get stuck in this negative loop of non-meditative self-punishment, and dishearteningly think, “I just can’t get it!”

Here’s how to get around this problem.

Rather than concentrating on not thinking, notice a thought as it becomes conscious and let it drift away on its own. Imagine the thought as a leaf in a river as you sit on the bank. The leaf floats in, comes close, then floats away. You don’t have to force it.

I started to notice the positive mental effects of meditation after just one week. I prefer to meditate in the morning, as I feel it helps get my entire day started on the right foot, but I know people who like afternoon or evening sessions better.

Though I’ve been meditating on and off for almost a year, but I’ve only consistently dedicated myself to doing it every day within the past few months. And I’ve found that the more regularly you can stick to a daily schedule, the larger the rewards. It can seem tough to carve 15 or 20 minutes out of a hectic day, but the way I see it, the crazier your life is, the more meditation will serve you.

After roughly a month of solid meditation, I started to have a much tighter, cooler control over my emotions and motivations. Little things that would usually upset me, like getting cut off in traffic, didn’t faze me. I felt more grounded and centered.

Perhaps the best analogy I can give is that before meditation, it felt like my brain was an Internet browser with too many tabs open. There was simply too many thoughts, worries and pressures stirring around up there for me to have the kind of direct, meaningful focus I desired.

In hindsight, it’s amazing what sitting still and doing literally nothing can do for your psyche and sense of wellbeing. Meditation’s power has been praised for centuries, and now given the scientifically validated support that it relieves stress, there’s really no reason not to give it a whirl.

58 – Fourteen of Our Best Kept Secrets of Life!

In this episode, Dr. Dave and Yoko reveal fourteen of their best kept secrets of life!

1. Believe you can make your life better! Yoko says, “Treat every day like your Birthday!” Don’t just wait for one day a year to feel special. You feel so great and wonderful on your birthday. You deserve to feel this way all year long! Listen to Dr. Dave’s ideas for your daily mantra.

2. “The fuel you put into your body has a tremendous effect on how you function,” says Dr. Dave. Eat a plant-based whole food diet. Keep sugar, oil, and salt to a minimum. We have many previous episodes about what to eat for your best life and best health.

3. Daily Exercise. Walk 4 Magic Miles a day. 4 miles will make a huge difference in your life. “It will be one of the best things you will do every day,” says Dr. Dave. Yoko does her “2 Minute Sonic Care Exercise”. Sonic Care is the electric toothbrush that has a 2 minute timer included. Yoko does lunges and squats every morning while brushing her teeth.

4. Love and Family. “You must have love in your life for health, well being, and it will hurt your life without it!” says Dr. Dave. Yoko also includes pets as part of your love and family. Pets are an amazing source of unconditional love.

5. Yoga, Stretching. Meditation. Every single day Dr. Dave has a morning ritual which includes meditation. He has found 21 minutes to be the right amount of time for him to get centered and start his day off right.

6. Morning Ritual. Yoko starts with cuddling with her cats, then she takes a nice hot bath, she meditates in tub for 5-10 minutes, then she stretches. Once out of the tub, she has a great breakfast. Dr. Dave has talked about his morning ritual several times on previous episodes. Get up an hour or two before you need to be out the door each day. Create your own morning ritual. Dr. Dave would love to hear what you do for your morning ritual.

7. Turn off the television. The news channels are filled with bad negative news. It is not uplifting news. It is shocking negative news that can affect your life. Turn it off and take it out of your life!

8. Let go of the stress in your life. This could be work, family, friends. Don’t take on other people’s stress or anger. “If you forgive people for their crazy actions they have done in the past; this will change your life,” says Dr. Dave.

9. Money. “Spend below your means!” says Dr. Dave. Stop living paycheck to paycheck. Stop spending everything your have or spending more than you have and putting it on credit. “When you are financially responsible, your life will change and you will see a tremendous difference,” says Dr. Dave.

10. Sleep. You need need 7-9 hours a night of sleep. “Sleep is a lost art. Make sleep a priority.” says Dr. Dave. Getting good sleep allows you to function better, cope better, handle stress better. Sleep makes everything better. Getting good proper sleep helps you live better and longer.

11. Make sure you are current on your medical and dental exams. Do not delay or put these things off. Denial is no way to live. If you do not have your health, you do not have your best full life.

12. Be selective you have in your lives. Your life, your energy, your time is valuable. You can’t be friends with everyone. You have a choice who is in your life.

13. Happy Hour should not come from a bar. Do not find your happy hour in a bar with alcohol and bad food and bad choices. Are you avoiding other things you need to change like your job and end up at happy hour to cope with not making that change?

14. Pray. Pray in your own way. There is power in the universe from prayer. It will certainly not hurt. Yoko says to remember to do prayers not only in need, but gratefulness when your prayers have been answered!
