Happy July 4th if you are in the U.S.A.! We are celebrating Independence Day today. So to all my American listeners, I hope you have a great day today! Celebrate, remember what you are celebrating, and be safe as well. Please have a great day!

Weirdness

I have some exciting stuff to share with you today. I want to share something kind of funny with you right off the bat. You might remember that in previous episodes that I sometimes record outside. And somehow noise tends to follow me. And I have a great example. It’s crazy. I can’t explain it. I don’t think it’s negative.

So I am ready to do this conference call yesterday. I found a place that was very peaceful and there was no one around. So I made the call and we were talking. And about 5 to 10 minutes into this call a landscape truck show ups right where I am and unloads I can’t even tell you how many people with lawn mowers and other equipment and they start working right in the middle of my call. Now I realize that they have a job to do but I tried to find the most peaceful place ever and within 10 minutes this truck pulls up and I had nowhere to go. So I had to walk around and try to avoid these guys on these really loud machines.

I know that there’s energy out there in the universe. We pray, we hope, we look for positive energy. I swear I am not out looking for noise. But what I think it does it make you realize that there are not a lot of quiet places anymore in popular areas. Our peace and quiet is getting more difficult to find. You might not realize it if you are not out recording something or on a very important call. You probably don’t notice the extraneous noise. But let me tell you something, take a microphone and start recording something outside and you’ll see how incredibly noisy it is almost everywhere.

Weirdness follows me for some reason. It just follows me. I have a great life and I am living my lifestyle, The David Madow Lifestyle. But for some reason, it follows me and I can’t explain it. Like one day, several episodes ago, I was in my car and I found this back parking spot in a very large mall area. I was meeting someone for lunch at the mall. So I parked a ways away from everybody. And sure enough a whole landscape crew found me and surrounded me.

Exciting Announcement

I have something incredibly cool to share with you now. A couple weeks ago I was doing my Periscope broadcast. And many of you that are listening to this now are regulars on my Periscope broadcasts. If you are not sure what Periscope is, it’s a free app that you can download on your tablet or phone and watch live streaming broadcasts. So you can pick it up and turn it on and start to broadcast. And if your title is interesting enough, people all over the world will pick it up and start watching you. Over the past year, I have developed a really good following and audience. I do a daily broadcast generally Monday through Friday around 8:15a.m. EST.

So I was doing a Periscope broadcast a few weeks ago and on the spur of the moment I had an idea. I have several of you guys and gals that are really interested in living this lifestyle and maybe even changing a lot of the things you are doing in your lives. So I came up with this idea that I would love to have kind of a 2 day retreat. You would come into my home and for two full days you would hang with me and my wife Yoko. We only want to take 10 people. We want it to be very intimate so that we are teaching 1 on 1. We want to teach you how to live this lifestyle and show you every single day. Now, you won’t be sleeping at our house because we just don’t have the room to hold 10 people to sleep. But there are some nearby hotels that we are going to recommend.

I started talking about this a little bit and as soon as I said I wanted to limit this to 10 people, people began messaging me that they want in and that they want to do it. I am not sure how many are serious and are gonna do it but I’ve got a list going already. I want to keep it to 10. It’s going to be awesome! Our friend Sandy who is a Yoga instructor came over yesterday and after Yoga we began brainstorming and she was crazy about the idea. We are going to be teaching Yoga, meditation, and cooking demonstrations. We’ll also be taking some group mastermind walks where we will be sharing ideas and looking at nature. We will have a drum circle. If you don’t know what that is, stay tuned because that’s incredible in itself. We will be answering any questions you have and I will be sharing my life and opening up about things that I have never ever talked about on Periscope or here on my podcast or shared from the stage. Yoko and I will be sharing everything. The group that comes will be like an elite group that will be privy to the exact way that we live this lifestyle. And it’s not difficult. By the time you leave, if we haven’t totally changed your life than we haven’t done our job.

Nothing is set in stone yet and we are looking at calendars. From what I am seeing there is a very good chance that it is going to be in April of 2017. That’s how crazily booked I am up until then. But it’s most likely going to be a weekend in April 2017. I will keep you informed as to happenings. Right now I am calling it the 2 Day David Madow Lifestyle Retreat but we might come up with a catchy name. As a matter of fact, if you have a really cool name idea, message me and let me know.

We’re also going to have 2 lunches and 2 dinners together. I’m actually going to pick 4 places that Yoko and I love. The meals are going to be vegan but even if you’re not vegan you will be living a vegan lifestyle for this 2 day retreat. We are going to teach everything. I have not come up with an exact pricing yet, but I am going to make it fair. I promise you will get much more than your money’s worth. Unfortunately we can’t put the whole thing on for free. There will be expenses involved. It will be planned out and it’s going to be an amazing weekend.

If you are interested and want to be on the list, send me a Facebook message here or you can email me at rundrdave@gmail.com. I will confirm that I received your message and add you to the list. There is no commitment just yet and we will remove you from the list at your request. But it will give me an idea who is interested. However please only sign up for the list if you are seriously interested.

It’s super exciting! And we hope to see you there. We want to hang out with you. We want to change your life! If you’ve come this far, it’s about time to really totally change your life. And we are going to do it!

Practice What You Preach

I want to finish off by sharing something that happened to me the other day. I want to share this with you because I preach a certain lifestyle. I was coming home from work the other day. It was a rainy day. I live in a rural area. I was going to make a left hand turn on my street and there was a car coming towards me making a right. He was going very very slow and I felt that I had plenty of time. I felt that I had plenty of time to make the left turn in front of him before he was even going to get to the intersection to make the turn. So I made the left hand turn not thinking anything of it. Next thing I know I am driving down my street and he is behind me. Not only is he behind me but I see he is really tailing me and it looks like he is not really happy. He is trying to swerve around me and pass me. He is honking his horn and this guy is going crazy. At first I was trying to figure out what they story was. I couldn’t imagine why he could be so upset. The only thing that I could possibly think of is that maybe he felt that I cut him off. But this guy was going nuts and he was trying to pass me but I was not letting him. In a situation like this, you have to think fast. What do you do? This guy could be a mad man. He could be looking for a confrontation. Who knows?! I thought that if I let him pass me, he would have the upper hand. So I was not going to allow this guy to pass me. It was maybe a mile from my house. He was honking the horn and trying to come around me. I felt that the smartest thing to do would be to not drive into my driveway because I don’t want this guy to see where I live. My license plate does say Go Vegan so the guy could have very easily remembered my license plate and do a search. So I decided to keep driving straight past my house and I would try to pull into a fire station or police station even though I was pretty far from anything like that out in the middle of nowhere. I was not going to let this guy intimidate me. But I was going the speed limit and I was not going to give him the finger or anything like that. I kept cool.

What ended up happening is that he turned off into a small side street before you get to my house. And was never to be seen again. I continued on and turn into my driveway and that was pretty much it. I didn’t get pissed off, I didn’t get upset,my blood pressure didn’t go up, I didn’t feel that I needed to go find this guy and take revenge or anything like that. I practice what I preach. I let it go. The last thing I want to do was to have this ruin my day, my life, ruin my week, or step into some type of revenge. It’s not worth it.

When I got home I told my wife Yoko about it and I think I talked about it on my Periscope broadcast. I wanted to share that with you because it’s a learning experience. I do practice what I preach and what I teach to you. I teach not to be stressed out, and not to fight with people, don’t take yourself to their level, try to do the right thing. Maybe I made a mistake. Maybe I should have waited for him to make the turn.

My lesson for today is to please don’t let idiots stress you out. Recognize that they are idiots and some things are just totally out of your control. Think and try to do the right thing. That’s just one part of The David Madow Lifestyle. There are so many things I want to teach you and so many things that I have taught you over the life of this podcast.

Thank you so much for hanging with me. I hope you enjoyed it! We got through this without any landscaping trucks finding me 😉 We did it! Happy Holiday! I’ll be back next Monday. Have a great one!

142 – My Entire Life Changed

Highlights from today’s show…

  1. Dr. Dave meets up with an old friend.
  2. Today’s Facebook post and why Dr. Dave talks about it.
  3. How Dr. Dave knows his entire life changed…

Welcome to The David Madow Lifestyle Show. It’s Dr. Dave, “Mr. Vaygan” as they also call me. It’s Episode #142. Of course you know that this is the show where I help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier. And I just want to Thank You for being a friend and not only for being a friend of mine but for being so positive and just enjoying life. That’s what it’s all about. Thank You from the bottom of my heart. And you might be thinking to yourself, “well, I am not so positive and I really don’t love my life.” If that’s the case, you must be new because my friends love their lives. And if you aren’t loving your life yet, just give it a few episodes and you will be. And if you’re not, message me and we’ll figure out why.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

Life is short and we really should be enjoying what we are doing. We should be. I don’t think we were put on this Earth just to get up in the morning to go to a job that we hate 5 days a week and be miserable and only look forward to the weekends and vacations. I just don’t think we were put on Earth to do that. Do you agree with me? That just doesn’t sound right, does it? So I hope you are not in that situation. I hope that you are not in a job or a relationship that you are unhappy with. Let’s make it work! Let’ s make it better!

I want to share something with you today and it’s incredible. I am still spending a little bit of extra time down here in Florida. Just outside of Orlando to be exact. I spoke at a very large convention here and I am spending a couple of days before I head home. I was fortunate enough to spend some time with a woman who I was very close with back in the 80’s. She was not my wife and I didn’t date her or anything like that, but we were close because Louisa was the one person who was most instrumental in really helping me build my dental practice almost from the beginning into a very successful practice. I owe this woman a lot. I hired her pretty much right out of high school and she was passionate, loved what she did, and she was personable and loved the patients. And the patients loved her! She could assist in the back with the patients and be on desk work. She pretty much ran the show. She was only 19 years old but she pretty much proved to me that she could run the show. And not only run the show but build the practice. She understood business and she understood communication. She was such a lucky find. I didn’t even know how to interview back then and I don’t even remember exactly how I found her. It might have been from an ad, I don’t know. I am glad I found her and she is a wonderful person.

So I spent some time with Louisa today poolside just sort of hanging out. I had told her that I had a lot of work to do and that I had to record a few podcasts but we made some time. And I was only going to spend about 30 minutes but we started hanging out and talking. And she introduced me to her present husband. I don’t know, I think a couple hours went by. We started reminiscing about old times and it was just unbelievable. The only reason we stopped was because a humongous storm is supposed to be coming through the area and they kicked everybody out of the pool. Otherwise, who knows, I probably would still would have been down there.

However, something came out of this conversation. I am not just talking here and telling you about my fun time. There’s a reason I am talking about this and I really think it’s going to help you. We were talking about old times, and when I say old time I mean at least 3 decades ago. So Louisa started asking me about my life back then and we sort of lost touch over the years. She didn’t even know I got divorced until recently. But she started asking me questions and I started talking about a lot of things. And normally some of the things she asked me I like to keep private. I don’t really tell a lot the reason I got divorced. But we got to talking and something that Louisa said really struck a chord with me today.

She told me that there was a point when we were working together that she could tell that I started looking older and maybe not as healthy. She could tell that I wasn’t looking as good as I should have. And maybe the reason that came up was that here I am 61 years old outside in a bathing suit. She said to me something like “Dr. Madow you look better now than you did a long time ago. You look younger now.” I told her that it had a lot to do with my vegan diet and exercise.

And it does but I will tell you what else it has to do with. I started feeling old when I was in a rut. I was in a business and a job that I didn’t love and I admitted this to her today. It was good and we had a good practice but I just didn’t think I wanted to be a practicing clinical dentist for the rest of my life. Don’t get me wrong it’s a great profession and I have a lot of friends that love it and do very well. But for some reason it just hit me along time ago that it wasn’t what I wanted to do forever. It started affecting my health, and they way I look, my psyche, and just my personality. I don’t think I was the real me. I was also in a relationship that was not really working out like I wanted it to. Again, I am not blaming anyone. Maybe it was me. There is no blame here at all but I was living a life that wasn’t really right for me.  It’s interesting spending some time with someone I spent a lot of time with back in the 80’s and how she sees me today.

I was in a place that wasn’t really right for me. I couldn’t truly be myself. So today at the pool, Louisa said “you know your personality is just totally different than it used to be back and then. You look and feel like a different person to me.” And I said to her that the reason was that I just didn’t feel the freedom to be myself back then. I just didn’t feel it. And maybe I didn’t give myself permission back then to be the true David Madow. What you are hearing now and what you have heard since the beginning has been the real David Madow. But if I had this microphone back in say 1985 or even 1995, you would be hearing an entirely different person back then. A different voice. I would probably be much more reserved, less confident, just a very very different David Madow.

I am a different person now because I had the guts, the courage, to admit to myself that the life I was living wasn’t the life I wanted to live. That sounds a little gruesome and no I never thought about harming myself. I didn’t mean it like that. But the life I was living back then wasn’t the life I wanted to live.

And so I made a change. I sold my dental practice. I remember the day I stopped practicing dentistry back in 1993. My whole life changed. I felt like a different person. As many of you know I work with dentists and help motivate dentists to make them successful. That’s one of the things I do. I have a lot of friends in dentistry and I love them. Dentistry is great and I am very close with the profession, I just don’t see patients anymore. And I’m married to a wonderful woman who I love. Who by the way is great on the show but hasn’t been on for a little while. I will get her back. I promise. I am just in a very good place. We hang out together, and do things together, and eat meals, and talk. I just feel really good inside. I know that it’s right. It’s not the first time that I have talked about this subject but it’s interesting coming from someone that I haven’t had a lot of contact with since back in the mid 80’s.

I don’t need to hear someone someone say I look younger because I am 61 and even if I look 61, that’s ok with me. If I look 68, as long as I feel good about myself and healthy inside, that’s fine. It’s always good to hear someone say you look young, but I don’t need it. I think the reason that she said I looked younger and seemed happier is because I am. I am happier now. I made the changes. It took guts it took courage but I made the changes.

So I hope if you are in that situation you have acted on it or are beginning to act on it. You know in your heart if you like what you are doing. And as I said, we weren’t put here to do things that we hate all the time. That’s not the way it should be! Of course we need to work but it should be something we are passionate about and love. If you are in that situation, I beg of you, make a change. If I did not make a change, I don’t know where I would be right now. I was heading in the direction where I would be very unhealthy, I wouldn’t have looked that good right now, and I wouldn’t feel alive. I’m not immune to anything. There is no guarantee in life and I could drop tomorrow. And if I did drop tomorrow, at least I went in a way that I was really happy with my life.

A lot of incredible things have been happening lately. I have been surrounding myself with positive people like you. When you surround yourself with positive people, you get that energy back. I like to hang out with like minded people. People that give me more positive energy.

I put a post on Facebook earlier today. I was sitting at the pool bar/restaurant and I was actually doing some writing on my Macbook. I love what I do because I can do work from wherever I am. So I was sitting at the counter. A woman came in with two very young girls. One was about 3 and the other was between 1 and 2. She ordered lunch for them and their lunches consisted of chicken nuggets, french fries, and a grilled cheese sandwich. I was looking at these young girls and there was not a green in sight and not a piece of fruit in sight. I was thinking to myself that these girls are growing up thinking that this is normal American food. Maybe it is. I don’t know. But I put up a post on Facebook saying that this is becoming normal food in this country and that’s why we are all getting so sick. I got a ton of positive responses but one guy was very sarcastic to me. He said something like, “why don’t you worry about yourself and don’t worry about what other people are eating.” I made a comment to him saying something like “make sure you unfollow me as soon as you can because I don’t really need this type of negative energy on my page.” Now, that doesn’t mean that people have to agree with me but let’s be nice about it. I want to surround myself with people like you! People that are positive.

That’s my message for today. I think it was really important. My meeting with Louisa wasn’t just a meeting. I started thinking about all the things I did in my previous life and how I changed them for the better. And I am positive  you can do the same!

Thanks for being a friend. I do love ya! See you next time!

141 – Here’s Why You Eat Meat

Highlights from today’s show…

  1. Dr. Dave shares two reasons why you probably eat meat…
  2. What are some of the benefits of living a vegan lifestyle?

Welcome back my friends! It’s the show that helps you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier! I want to start off the show today and make it a point to tell you that life is good. Life is good. I know there a lot of crazy things going on around us probably almost every day. We hear bad things in the news and I don’t want to go into details.  You can only imagine what I am talking about. There’s just so many weird things. We can be down on life, down on the planet, and down on the government, and down on terrorists but we have to look for the good.

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” – Fred Rogers

Right now, I am down in Florida and I am speaking to an incredibly motivated and positive group of  about 1500 different people. It was a great day feeling all the positive energy. There is some good in this world. So no matter how bad you think things are personally or collectively in the world around us; stop for a second, breathe in some fresh air, and look around. There is good out there.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

I want to ask you a question. I have talked a lot about eating and being healthy on my show since the beginning. Are you still eating meat? Let’s talk about this for a few seconds. If you are eating meat, why are you eating meat? I realize that 97% of the people in North America are eating meat. So I am in the minority. The overwhelming minority. If you are a vegetarian or a vegan, we are in the minority. But here’s the deal, I want you to reflect and close your eyes for a few minutes and think about why you may be eating meat. And I will tell you probably why.

1) You were born eating meat. When you were growing up, that’s what you did. That’s what everybody did. You are born eating meat, milk, eggs, cheese, and dairy and things like that so you think it’s normal.

2) You have probably become accustomed to love the taste of it. People talk about how great bacon tastes, and how good meat is, and how great it smells on the grill. It tastes so good. So that’s probably another reason you’re not willing to give up that taste. And I don’t know whether you think it’s healthy or maybe you realize that maybe it’s not healthy but I think that most people believe that anything in moderation is ok. I am here to tell you it is not healthy at all. The way that these animals are bred and raised is with sickness and illness. They are bred unnaturally and they suffer too. There is nothing healthy about eating any of these animals. There just isn’t. I would challenge you to show me that eating any type of meat is healthier than eating plants. It’s not.

I have done it both ways. I grew up eating meat. And a little over two years ago, I switched to an all vegan diet. I do not eat or consume animal products. I spent 58 years of my life, eating what you may be eating now. Yes meat used to taste good to me but when you quit eating animal products and you’re eating beautiful wonderful glorious plants all day long it’s amazing. There are so many things that come from the ground that you can eat that are plant based. Such as greens, fruit, nuts, beans, seeds, and grains. There are so many varieties. I don’t walk around feeling hungry or that I am missing something. Because of where I am in life and what I have discovered, when I am at a family event where people are passing around a dead animal it actually grosses me out. It doesn’t make sense to me. I am not saying you are a bad person at all but what I am saying is that most people aren’t really thinking at all where it’s coming from. How they’re raised and how they’re bred. What chemicals are being given to them to try to cut down on illness and toxicity coming from these factory farms? There is so much illness and sickness. And animals are sitting in feces and there’s nowhere to move. They’re overweight and have heart problems because their bodies can’t support how quickly they grow from breeding. I have learned a lot over the past 2 to 2 and 1/2 years. I learned things that I never knew. And when innocent people are eating meat, you really don’t know what you’re eating.

When you stop eating meat, you will notice some things happen to your body. Your skin is much more vibrant, you lose weight, cholesterol levels go way down, if you have diabetes or pre-diabetes your blood sugar will begin to normalize. I can’t say it’s in 100% of cases. But it does happen in the overwhelming majority of cases I have seen. You become happier, healthier, more energetic, and more positive. My outlook on life and positivity has increased so much since I became vegan. Because I was eating cruelty and suffering. I am not blaming anyone. As I said, I was raised to eat meat and most likely you were too unless you were raised vegan.

If you decide to change, and adopt a plant based diet. I don’t mean drinking diet coke and eating potato chips because that is theoretically plant based. That is not a healthy diet. I am talking about eating healthy. When you eliminate animal products from your diet, you will be amazed at how much younger you will look and feel. I am 61 years old and I feel like a kid. I feel like I can do anything. People tell me all the time that I look vibrant and young for my age. And I take that as a compliment. I believe that it is a side effect of being vegan.

I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to try it. Just test is for 90 days and see what happens. I admit it’s anecdotal and there is no scientific evidence but I can only tell you what happened to my body and my outlook on life and the same with my wife Yoko. So many things have changed for the better in our life and in our relationship. I can’t sit here and tell you that everything is perfect. No, I am a human being like everyone else, things that come up, and problems and issues. Taking animals products out of your life is not a panacea that will solve all the problems in your life. If you’re $100,000 in debt, going vegan isn’t going to solve that problem. You have to do that on your own. I do think it helps to go vegan because I think that you can think clearer. Like I said, I can speak to this because I have done it both ways. If you have never tried to go vegan, there is really no way you can say that you can’t do that. It’s not difficult at all. I used to think that being vegan would be impossible. It’s actually one of the easiest things I have ever done because I prepare. I don’t eat in the junk food places that 90% of Americans do. I don’t want to look like most Americans do. 61 might be considered old but I don’t feel like an old man. I feel like a young vibrant man that can do almost anything.

What do you think? Have I convinced you to try it? See how you feel and see how your health is. I feel so much better knowing that I don’t have any part in animal suffering.

I hope this was a good message for today. I know a lot of you are already plant based but I think this is an interesting message so I hope you listened until the end anyway. If it’s not for you, I still love you as a human being.

140 – You Were Born to Do This

Highlights from today’s show…

  1. Dr. Dave shares a personal story that he’s never told before.
  2. What were you born to do? Are you living your passion?
  3. Dr. Dave shares his ultimate goal for this podcast…

Hey there! How are ya? It’s Dr. Dave and this is episode #140 of The David Madow Lifestyle Show. This is the show where I help you live longer, stronger, healthier, and happier. Welcome! I am so glad you are here with me. I’ve got something that I want to share with you today that I have never shared in public. There are only two or three people on the planet that know this story and I want to share it with you today.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

Before I get started I want to thank you so much for being a friend and listener. I consider you a friend. If you are taking time out of your day to listen to my words and help improve your life, then yes you are a true friend!

A few night ago I was privileged to be a guest at a baseball game for the Baltimore Orioles. As you know I am from the Baltimore area, although I live in a rural area in Northern Baltimore County. So we have the Baltimore Orioles here and I grew up watching them. I hadn’t been to a game in several years now. A friend of my wife, Yoko, invited us to a game. Her friend’s husband is a major league pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. So we went to watch him and they killed the Baltimore Orioles.

Part of my life flashed before my eyes as we were watching this game. And I’ll tell you why. As I was watching the pitchers for both teams play, I had a flashback from when I was about 10 or 11 years old when I played Little League baseball. For those of you not from the U.S., Little League is a baseball club for kids. So my memory flashed back to Little League. I was on a team for several years and I wanted to be a pitcher. I just loved pitching! I thought I was really really good. I was tall, I was lean, and fairly strong armed. I had the makings of a pitcher and I wanted to pitch. That was my dream and my passion. But my manager had other ideas. He did not let me pitch. He picked some other guys that were super athletic. The manager did not think I was good enough to pitch. He put me in the outfield or sometimes first base. But I never got to pitch. And I started to get really upset with my manager and said “hey look I can pitch. I want to pitch. I want to show you how good I can pitch. I’ll be good I promise. We’re gonna win some games. Let me have a chance.” My manager never let me try. I never got to go on the mound to pitch, not even as a relief pitcher or a substitute. I never got to pitch because my manager didn’t think I was good enough. Who was my manager? My manager was my Dad. For some reason, my Dad had this thing where he thought his son, David Madow, was not meant to be a pitcher. He thought I was never going to be a good pitcher and he wanted to prove something so he never put me on the mound and let me try it.

And over many many years, I’ve thought about this and I’ve always looked back and wondered what would have happened if little David Madow would have had his chance to be a pitcher in the Little League? What would have happened to him? Would he have gone on to play high school baseball or college baseball? Maybe he would have been such a star that he would have made it into the minor leagues, the major leagues, the Word Series’ Most Valuable Player. I had this dream the other night while we were sitting at the game the other night watching these young pitchers on the mound. That could have been me. I know it could have been me. I could have done that. It should have been me. It would have been me if my Dad had given me a chance. And I think of reasons why he wouldn’t have wanted his son to pitch. Because you know you always kind of err on the side of not showing favoritism to your son.

My father was a shoe manufacturer, and I used to work at his place during the summer. He would always give me the absolute shitiest jobs there. You couldn’t really get any lower. Maybe he wanted me to start from the bottom and I get it but it was almost like he didn’t want to show his son any favoritism whatsoever. And again I think he wanted to show the other players that I am the manager and I am not favoriting my son. I don’t know. Maybe I sucked but I don’t think so.

In our family there were three boys. I am the oldest and I think I was always the natural athlete out of all three of us. There’s no question. I think I still am probably. It just came more naturally to me and I think I could have done it. I think I could have been in the major leagues. I talk to my Dad often about this. We’ve had talks over many many many years about this. And he always comes back to the same thing, “Dave you just didn’t have it. You weren’t good enough.” And I say “Dad, you never gave me a chance.” And he would say “Nah, you just couldn’t pitch, you just weren’t good enough.” And I say “but you never let me try.” And he really didn’t have an answer for that, he just didn’t.

I was over at his house about 3 or 4 days ago, helping him with some computer issues that he had. We started talking about the pitching thing again. It comes up a lot these days. He looked at me and said, “Dave, I think you are right. I think I should have let you pitch. I think you would have been a good pitcher.” It took him 76 years to finally admit that to me!

I am really goal oriented and I have told you for many years now that you can get practically whatever you want. Think about it, write it down, read it every day. Just make it your life. Make it that you want to do it so badly that it is going to come true.

But hey I’ve gotta tell you something. I’m 61 years old. There’s no major league baseball team that’s going to hire me. There’s zero chance of that. I couldn’t even get a position as the bat boy or water boy. No one is going to hire me in the major league. Would a senior league consider me? I don’t know. But at this point in my life I probably don’t have time to do that. I am traveling so much and my schedule is so full that I couldn’t commit to any kind of team.

So I started thinking and I think we are all destined to do something. We are all born with DNA or something in our blood or soul. I remember when I was 8 years old in my pajamas in my room looking in the mirror. And I remember it like yesterday, I would say this is The David Madow Show. I pretended that I was on TV and that I had a talk TV show. But I had this feeling in my soul, in my heart, and in my blood that I wanted to be some type of entertainer, for lack of a better term. How do you like that? I was 8 years old! I never really made it on TV although I’ve done some interviews on TV when I published my book a few years ago. The closest I got was…hey you are listening to it! The David Madow Lifestyle Show. That’s close enough right?! It’s close enough for me. I’ve got you and other people from all over the world listening to me. Thousands and thousands of people listening to my voice. That’s a success! I think that’s great! For some reason, I think it was in my heart, my blood, my soul, my genetic make up for me to be an announcer, a talk show host, an entertainer, something maybe on the stage. And I am on stage too. I’m a motivational speaker. I travel all over the world in North America and speak to audiences and motivate them. Part of my childhood memories and what I wanted to do, a lot of it came true. I am not complaining about my life. I never made it to the major leagues or the actual pitcher’s mound, but I am not complaining.

So what is it that you are supposed to be doing? What is it that’s in your soul, in your heart, in your genes, in your blood? What is it that you’re supposed to be doing? Are you living the life of your dreams or are you settling for something that you know in your heart you don’t want to do? Is there something that you just really love and something that you know you really want to do and something you can make a difference with and change the world even if it’s one person at a time?

When I started my podcast about 3 years ago, my goal was to just make a difference and change the world even if it was just one person at a time. When I started this show I literally had a handful of listeners on the first show. I’ve told you before, my handful of listeners were my mom, my dad, and maybe my brothers listened, and if I bribed Yoko she would listen a little bit 😉 It was a small handful of listeners and now the show gets thousands of listeners. I persisted and didn’t quit after several shows. So what is your show? Mine was The David Madow show when I was 8 years old and to be a major league baseball pitcher when I was 10 years old.

That never happened but I am still living a great life and I am really happy with it. I am on stage in front of people entertaining, inspiring, motivating, just changing lives. That’s my calling And that’s what I want to do and I am doing it. Right now, there is nothing in this world that would get me to go back and change that. Even if it meant living in a tiny apartment for the rest of my life with Yoko. I would rather do that anyway so it doesn’t even matter. I would do that way before having that house. There is no chance of me doing something now in my life that I just don’t want to do. I can’t tell the difference between work and being on vacation. People say to me, “Dave do you work?” I absolutely work. I have several businesses. I work but it’s so much fun, it’s like I am on vacation when I am working. Sure I have meetings, and I have to speak, and I have teleconferences. But generally my time is my own. I can be creative at 2am if I want and I can be creative at 10am if I want. Whenever the creative juices start running through my body, that’s when I do it. I don’t have to do it by any clock or set schedule. I just don’t have to do that and I love it.

That’s my message for today. I was a heavy one and it really is the first time I have told you. I don’t think I’ve given this message before and if I have excuse my brain power leaving me and my memory but I don’t think I have. I may have talked about it really quickly but not in this detail.

That’s all I have for you today. I am so glad you are a friend. I’ll see you next week.

139 – The Crap in Your Life and Suicide

Highlights from today’s show…

  1. It’s Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. And this is what I am doing…
  2. Something I have been dreading for years…
  3. It’s just about never as bad as you think. I go in depth about this statement today.

Welcome to episode #139 of The David Madow Lifestyle Show. It’s the show where I help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier. And as you know a lot more than that.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

Before I get started, I have got to tell you a funny story. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed it. I just recorded episode #139 or at least I thought I did. I recorded it a short time ago. I was finishing up and I look down at my recorder and for some reason it just wasn’t recording. I figured out the reason. It was a technical problem but I had just gone through this whole thing and recorded a beautiful episode for you and there was nothing there and no way to retrieve anything. It just stopped. So this is the second time, I am recording this episode. And I think it’s going to be even better than the first time. Because whenever you do something once it’s good and everything but it’s like a practice. But then the second time you do it, you nail it. Now obviously I don’t have the time to record it once and then record it again but it does happen sometimes. I like to think I am a perfectionist to a point. Of course every episode I put out won’t be perfect but I am enough of a perfectionist that if I ever record an episode for you and I don’t think it’s great, I will delete it or abandon it and record another one for you. Because I really want this to be great. If you are taking 20 or 25 minutes out of your day to listen to me, I want it to be good. So, this is the second time I am recording episode #139 so enjoy it.

Memorial Day

It is Memorial Day weekend here in the United States. And it’s a day where people normally barbeque (hopefully just vegetables). And I always take several minutes out of my weekend and just reflect and think about being thankful and praying for the men and women that made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives in military service. So I always give my thanks, I think, I meditate, I pray. And I think that’s what the holiday weekend should be about.

Choices

I also wanted to take a second and tell you what else I am thinking about and praying for. I am referring to the billions and billions of land animals and even more aquatic animals that are killed every year so human beings can eat. It’s unlike those people that gave their lives either volunteering or knowing that they are defending our country. The animals, unfortunately, don’t really have a choice. They are bred into this animal agricultural system. They are living lives in misery, sickness, pain, disease, and fear. It’s a horrible life. And then comes the point where they are taken to the slaughterhouse and their lives are ended. Unfortunately, that is probably the best day of their lives. It’s just horrible. Hopefully one day this craziness is going to stop. So if you are doing any kind of thinking or meditating or praying, just think for a couple moments about all the suffering of the animals and the killing.

By going vegan and eliminating animals and animal products from your life, this world would be such a better place. Since going vegan, I just feel so much better about my purpose and I am so much more at peace with myself because I am no longer contributing to the suffering. Every time a person decides to stop eating, wearing, and using animals, it makes a big impact on this planet. If you haven’t done it yet, all I ask is that you just think about it. That’s all I ask. Can you do it?

T Shirts

Before I get into today’s show, I just want to talk to you about my website really quick. It’s going crazy and we are getting so many visitors. Thank you so much for listening to The David Madow Lifestyle Show. I have my “Oy Vegan” T Shirts  on the site. They are a beautiful green color with “Oy Vegan” accross the front. And let me tell you something. They are a conversation starter. I guarantee you that if you are wearing one of these you are going to get noticed. They are going to ask you about what “Oy Vegan” is and you will be able to tell them. Not just the good that we are doing here. Not only that, but when you order a t-shirt from me, I donate $2 per shirt to a charity. Right now I donate to the Catskill Animal Sanctuary. I have visited there personally with Yoko. It’s a beautifully run sanctuary. A little bit adds up and we can help the animals that way too. So take a look. We have sizes running from small to extra large. We just received an order from a few good people in Australia. I want this shirt to be all over the planet. Order yours today and know that you are not only promoting being a vegan but you are helping the animals so please consider that.

The Crap in Your Life

I want to talk to you today about something I have been dreading for somewhere between 5 to 10 years. I will explain. I have my office and I have a little warehouse in the back. And over many many years not only have I been shoving a bunch of files back there but things that I don’t really need but didn’t want to part with. This warehouse has become a storage area for Dave’s old cluttered junk. I don’t want to say junk because a lot of this stuff was important to me at the time, I just didn’t have a place to put it. I put it in this warehouse knowing full well that one day I would have to be in there sorting through all of it. It’s not that I obsessed over this day, I didn’t. But I am happy to announce today that I did it. We are downsizing our office which is a great thing because these days so much stuff is done virtually. I work from wherever I am on the planet. I don’t need a private office anymore. Our team needs an office of course for their desks, computers, and phone lines but we don’t need anywhere near the space that we had over the past 10 to 20 years. So we’re moving into a much smaller place. I am really excited. Downsizing just means that you don’t have all the junk that you once had.

But along with downsizing means that you have to start going through junk and clutter and figuring out what to do with it. Like 5 to 10 years worth of stuff that was cluttered back in this warehouse. I had to clean out. The day was scheduled out and it was on the calendar but let me tell you something. I was dreading it. I was obsessing a little over how difficult it was going to be; I didn’t want to do it. I didn’t want to be in the situation of having to figure out what to do with everything. I was going crazy over this. I was losing some sleep. I did not want to be in this situation. It was last Tuesday. Number one, I am still alive. I didn’t get hurt. I finished the job. And let me tell you something,  it was much easier than I thought. All this worrying and wondering and it turned out to be easy. I had a couple team members back there helping me and it was great. We made piles for trash, stuff to keep, and stuff to give away. As it turns out I did a little post on a local Facebook group stating that we were cleaning out our warehouse and that most of the things were free. I announced the time as between 2pm and 3pm. And sure enough by 1:40pm people were already lining up outside on the warehouse steps. I am not exaggerating. And I have not seen so many happy faces in one place in such a long time. Because of my clutter and my junk, I made so many people happy. A woman came in and bought a guitar from me which was actually one of my first guitars.  She bought it for $40 and said that she was going to be giving it to her 10 year old son on his birthday and that he was going to love it. It made her so happy. Bottom line is that all of those people from the community that were in there talking and smiling, I made their day. We had a great time. I learned that there was no reason to learn to dread this day. It turned out to be so much better and so much more fun because it turned out to be so much easier than I thought. I started thinking back and there have been so many times when I have had a meeting or an appointment or an interview and I thought I just don’t want to do it. And 99.9% of the time these things turn out to be nothing. They turn out to be much better than we ever expected. Things in our lives are generally not nearly as bad as we think they will be.

Suicide

As I am walking down the street in my neighborhood, there is a little memorial on the street. There is an orange traffic cone with a large flag coming out of it and flowers and memorabilia around it. The reason this cone is here is that about 3 days ago, unfortunately a young man decided to take his life by driving down my street and putting a bullet through his head. He was 18 years old and was a volunteer firefighter for our local community. He was also a student. I didn’t know him personally but he lived nearby and drive by here all the time. So a few days ago he decided to end his life by putting a bullet through his head. And I started thinking how bad did he perceive things were? What was going on in his brain? Did he lose a girlfriend? Is he broke? Did he lose a job? Is he flunking out of school? What could have happened that was so bad that this 18 year old man decided to end his life? Thank God I have never really had a problem with some type of chemical imbalance in my brain. I know how bad that can be for people and how bad depression can be. But it’s generally never as bad as we think it is. There is always a way to get help or medication if you need it. There is always a way. I just feel horrible looking at this memorial right now knowing that this great kid who was already contributing a lot to society decided to end his life.

I come back to the warehouse in my office. Again, I don’t want to even begin to think that the two are equal. Me cleaning out the warehouse is not the same as someone taking their life. Trust me. I know how horrible that is. And maybe he had some real problems, I am not really sure. But I thought the warehouse clean out was going to be horrible. I thought it was going to take me days and days and days and a lot of stress to clean it up. It was nothing, it took a few hours, and it was a lot of fun. As I think back on my life and getting into college and professional school and a lot of things that I did in my life, I thought they were going to be hard. But rarely did they ever turn out to be as bad as I thought they would. I wish I could have talked to this young man before he did this to himself. So if you think there is anything going on bad in your life, if things are tough and they are tough for a lot of us. I have told you on this show many time how much junk and stuff I have been through. I am here to tell you that things get better. They get better if you work at it. Things have a tendency to work out. If you are sitting here now thinking there is no answer, no hope, I am here to tell you it is almost never as bad as you think it is. No matter how bad of a situation you think you are in.

I want you to take some time to reflect. I have given you several things to think about. The military people that have given their lives and the billions of animals that die every year. Think about anything that you’re going through or a loved one and please get some help for yourself or help somebody out. Because again it’s rarely as bad as you think. Let’s get that crap out of your life too! It’s not nearly as bad as you think! I love ya!

138 – Are You on the Right Trail

Highlights from today’s show…

  1. I am hiking in beautiful Yosemite National Park and I want to share it with you!
  2. I give a few new product recommendations that you won’t want to miss.
  3. Today, I tell you what is the most important thing in life. Is it what you think it is?

Welcome to episode #138 of The David Madow Lifestyle Show. This is the show where I help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier. And even a lot more than that. I am standing outside of Yosemite National Park in the beautiful state of California. I am looking right at the river that flows through Yosemite, the Merced River and I am looking up at the mountains. It’s just gorgeous and beautiful. If that sounds redundant than I don’t care. There are no words. If you have never been to Yosemite, I am going to give my highest recommendation.

I wanted to share something with you from yesterday. As we were taking a hike, I started thinking. I learned a lot from the trail and it’s kind of a metaphor for life. I am 100% sure I am going to be able to help you with your life today on this episode. There’s no question in my mind so hang in there.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

But first, really quick before I get into it, I want to give a shout out. I want to give a shout out to my good friend Ed Margolin and his wife Merry. Yoko and I were fortunate enough to be able to stop off at their store called Encore Theatrical Supply Company on the way to Yosemite from San Francisco. If someone I know is on my travel route, I do anything I can to be able to stop off. Whether it be having a meal with them or a short visit. It was a short visit since we didn’t have a lot of time. By the way, their store was a really cool place. It had costumes, dance accessories, and shoes. I don’t know enough about dance to do the store justice but it was a really cool place. I could have spent an hour trying on all the different wigs they had. But we did get a lot of pictures and got to get some good hugs which was cool.

We did the Bay to Breakers race this past Sunday in San Francisco. It’s probably my favorite day of the year when Yoko and I fly to San Francisco and run this 12k foot race. It’s more of a party than a race because people are dressed up in costume and there are people running naked. Not me, I did not run naked. It’s an incredible experience. Last year for my 60th birthday we had a bunch of people that came out and celebrated with us. I also want to give a shout out to Jai who came all the way out from Australia last year to run this race with us and to hang out. So I would like to see if we can get some people together next year in 2017. Look at your calendar! This race is always run on the third Sunday of May each year. Put a hold on that weekend if you can and we will talk about that later.

One of my favorite parts of doing a race is several days before a major race they have a big expo. Vendors come in from all over the place and talk about their products. I like to see and try out all the cool products that are out there. That’s one of the ways that I learn about new things. And I want to give a shout out to my friend Chuck Gruber. And I am not sure if he is the owner or a manager but the company is reflectyourgear.com. I met Chuck about six months ago when I ran the Rock N Roll Marathon in Las Vegas, NV last year. What they do is that they have these strips of small material. You peel them off and put them on a backpack, your running shoes, your clothing, the back of your jacket or something like that and it reflects your stuff. It makes it so that no one is going to miss you. It makes it safer to be on the road after dark. It’s really cool. I got one or two of these last November from Chuck and I have it on my Camelbak. And a few days ago at the expo he gave me a few more. These things reflect really well. And I am going to give this company a really good recommendation. They are not expensive at all. Instead of spending a ton of money on reflective gear, buy a few of these strips and put them on your bike or shoes or whatever you may have. I don’t get paid a penny for this. I give my honest recommendation for products. I don’t recommend something that I don’t like. If I see something that I think is going to be really good for you then I talk about it. If I think a product is not good, no matter how much I get paid. So thanks Chuck! it was good seeing you again and I think your product does really well because it is a great little company.

I want to give a shout out to MRM Protein Powder. It is vegan protein powder and I have been using it and talking about it for a long time now. I have a big shake with this powder every day. And when I miss a day, I can really feel the difference. I feel like I am lacking some type of energy. They were also there at the expo and I also got to meet the guys that work at that company. They are just a great group of people. I love surrounding myself with good people. It just feel right. It feel right doing business with people that are in alignment with me and with you. Be sure to find MGM Protein Powder and many more on my Products page.

Let me talk to you about something I learned on the trail yesterday. Yoko and I were hiking in Yosemite. And at one point she went ahead to do her own thing. We kind of wanted to do our own thing and we go at our own pace sometimes. Which is fine because we respect each other’s own pace. She went ahead a little bit and I started doing some thinking. I started realizing that walking on the trail is similar to life. We are all on trails whether we are walking through the woods or not walking through the woods. It is the trail of life. And there are so many similarities that I started thinking about yesterday. On the trail you pretty much need to know where you’re going. If you don’t know where you are going in the woods, you will get lost, run out of food, get hungry, and maybe even become hypothermic or hyperthermic. Something is going to happen to you and it’s not going to be good. It has happened to me in the past on the trail, and it’s not pretty. I ended up in the hospital due to my lack of preparation on the trail. And life is the same way. I was thinking to myself as I was on the trail yesterday, that I was not on the right trail. Maybe even no trail. Growing up and through high school. I was just waking up everyday and I wasn’t going in any direction. And that can be dangerous. Just like being on the trail in the wilderness. If you’re not sure where you’re going. I had no direction and didn’t really know what I wanted to do even going to college. Thank God I did ok. But even through dental school, I think I had no real direction. I think I was “off” the trail so many times. And so many times I could have gotten injured or worse. I got married and you know my story about marriage. I had many many good years of marriage. But I think about half way through, I was way off trail. I certainly did not have a compass and I certainly didn’t have a map. If I kept going that direction on that trail, I would have suffered some type of horrible tragedy. I was totally 0n the wrong trail there. I finally realized that I needed to get off the trail and take some time. Then I got back on the trail with total direction. And I can honestly say that I am on the right trail. And I am on many different trails as you know, but every trail I take I feel is the right one. And if I am on a trail that doesn’t seem to be leading me to the right place, I just get off that trail and get on to the correct trail.

Right now, I am looking at these really cool mountains that are rising above the Merced River. There isn’t really a trail from what I can see. I don’t think that many people hike these mountains, they are kind of in the middle of nowhere. But as I look at these mountains, I am pretty sure I could climb to the top of these mountains. A lot of times when I am on a trail in the woods, it’s not only about looking at your compass or looking ahead, but it’s looking way way way ahead and trying on your mind to figure out how your are going to get to that point. And many times if you are a hiker or a backpacker, you know that the way to the top (or to your endpoint) is not necessarily a straight line. A lot of times if you go in a straight line you will reach a cliff or some obstacle that’s impossible to get around. A lot of times there are twists and curves on trails. Looking at this mountain, I kind of have an idea how I would do it. And it’s certainly not running straight up the mountain. That would be impossible. I’d probably go to the right and then maybe up the spine of this mountain and then I think I would get there. My point is that sometimes the path is not crystal clear and it’s not a straight line. I have had many detours in my trails through life and I am sure you have to. I have spoken to many of you and have gotten to know a lot of you personally. And I feel that many of you out there are not sure if you are on the right trail of life. You are working really hard.  And that’s good that you are working hard, but life is not all about work work work. Make millions and millions and then once you make millions, make more. That’s not what life is about. I feel very strongly about this. I know many multi-millionaires that are just miserable in their lives. There’s nothing going on. Yeah, they have a family and they work every day. They bring home a ton of money. If I looked in their bank account, they probably have more zeros in their bank account than I would ever have in my entire life. But you know something? I will guarantee that I am having a much better time in my life. Right now, I am standing next to this river and I know it’s not crazy but most of the people I know are back home working. And let me make this very clear. I have nothing against work. Working is important and we need to work. I have my own business and I work really hard. But I have designed my life in such a way that I don’t have to be tied to the office five days a week from 9-5 and I look forward to the weekend and can’t wait to take my two or three days of vacation. No! I designed my life in such a way that I really enjoy every single day. It’s really nice and refreshing to kick back (and not have an internet connection). The sun is starting to come out and it is just beautiful. I am pretty darn sure that I have the path in my mind to get to the top. Thinking back, did I waste forty five years of my life not being on the right trail?! No, I don’t think so because you make mistakes and you are off trail but you learn from your mistakes. Many years ago I got off trail and ended up in the hospital dehydrated and I could have died. It’s not that I didn’t have water with me but I just didn’t understand that I needed to keep drinking and I got seriously dehydrated. Once you get dehydrated, you don’t feel like drinking or eating anything. It’s a horrible feeling. And you feel like your body seizes up and can’t do anything at all. That’s how I felt then. There were many times in my life when I probably could have ended up in the hospital. Like at one point when I didn’t have such a great relationship with my parents because I was trying to go with the “program” that I was supposed to be in. We could spend hours talking about my mistakes and the things that I went through. But the point is that I learned to get back on the right trail. So I want to end the show today by making sure you are on the right trail. You might not be there yet but are you headed in the right direction? Do you know how to get there? Do you know that there are going to be some obstacles and detours? Do you know how to prevent them? Do you know how to get around them? Think about it! I want you to do some soul searching. I love helping you live your best life ever! Since episode #1, I have said that this is the show that helps you live longer, stronger, healthier, and happier. And have you noticed that over the past several episodes we haven’t really been talking about exercise as much like how to get stronger or lose weight? We’ve been talking about happiness. From talking to you and people all over the world, I am finding out that happiness is the most important thing. In the end, I do believe that happiness is the most important thing! Please make sure you are on that trail and that you have direction!

137 – He Changed His Life

Highlights from today’s show…

  1. We have a special guest. Welcome Andre to today’s show.
  2. Andre gives his life changing advice for a healthier you!

Welcome to episode #137 of The David Madow Lifestyle Show. This is the show where I help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier. Fasten your seatbelt! This is going to be an incredible episode.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

Here’s what happened…I ran into an old friend of mine that I hadn’t seen in quite some time. And he was telling me a story about how his life changed. And I said, “oh Andre, I have got to get you as a guest on my show because you will inspire so many people.” So he agreed to do it and here we are. Listening to this will change your life!

Dr. Dave: “So, I’ve got my old friend Andre on the show with me today. Thanks so much for being here.”

Andre: “It is an honor. It’s great to speak with you Dr. Dave.”

Dr. Dave: “It’s great to have you on the line. I apologize to my listeners for the sound quality. It’s usually pristine studio quality sound but I am doing this over phone line so just bear with me. The content is going to be so worth it that you will forget about the sound quality. It’s not bad but it’s not as good as my studio quality. Andre listen, it was great catching up with you the other night. We hadn’t really talked in years. We’re old friends and we got on the phone a few nights ago and you told me an amazing story. So just to recap that story a little bit for my listeners. You told me the other night that you cut something out of your diet because of migraine headaches. So tell me a little bit about why you did it and how you did it?”

Andre: “Sure, I gotta tell you the process started over a year ago. I’ve been suffering from migraines and I’ve tried everything to get rid of my migraines. But the one thing that made sense was changing my diet. I cut out meat and within weeks the difference was incredible. I was getting migraines twice a month. And I am not sure if you have ever suffered from migraines but it’s just the most awful feeling in the world. I can’t describe it. Long story short, I cut out meat (and eventually alcohol) and it’s made all the difference in the world. And I was supported by my physician who happens to be a 70 year old vegan in better shape than I was. It was a common sense issue at that point.

Dr. Dave: “Wow! That’s very interesting. You didn’t tell me about your physician the other night. We will have to go into that in a little bit. But Andre, how long have you been suffering from migraines? Has it been a lifelong thing or were they more recent?”

Andre: “Oh man! Late high school. So 20+ years. I am 40 years old now and it started in my late teens. But in my late teens I didn’t really chalk it up as a migraine. I just, I didn’t know what it was. It was these awful headaches. I would lose 2 to 3 days of school and I wasn’t really sure why. Looking back, now that I have changed my diet and I am a lot more careful with what I put into my body. I ate like crap and it definitely didn’t help the fact that I was getting migraines. I was put on many different types of medication and I don’t want to knock medication but it didn’t help. All it did was suppress the pain but I was trying to get rid of the migraines. It’s been close to 70 weeks that I have been doing this to try to get these migraines and in those 70 weeks the reason why I have changed my diet has transformed. It’s so much more than that. I don’t want to oversimplify it but it’s just a common sense issue. And I think one of the things I said was that ingesting suffering just didn’t sit well with me anymore.”

Dr. Dave:  “Hold off on that because we are going to get into that in one second. Getting back to the migraines, you decided to cut out meat from your diet. At first it was only meat. Is this something that you researched online or did your 70 year old vegan physician recommend it? How did you actually determine that you were going to cut out meat from your diet to try to get rid of these migraines?”

Andre: “So, the doctor I went to suggested it. He didn’t tell me this is the reason and he didn’t tell me this is not the reason. He suggested it. And he described certain enzymes and reactions in my brain that could have triggered by meat – especially processed meats like bacon and hot dogs for example. When I started listening to him, I realized that everything on his list was something I was eating on a regular basis. Not once or twice a week. I was eating it every single day. That’s bad for my health to begin with, you know?”

Dr. Dave: “Once you cut out the meat, how long before the migraines totally subsided?”

Andre: “My migraines almost had a schedule at this point. It was like twice a month and I was just waiting for them to return and they didn’t. They didn’t. In the past year, I would say I had 2 migraines.”

Dr. Dave: “Wow. Then you decided that cutting out meat is not enough. At some point you decided to go completely vegan. What made you actually do that? The migraines were already gone pretty much then you decided ok, I am going to go completely vegan.”

Andre: “Right, so it started off as, ok this is going to be a challenge. This is going to be a lifestyle change. This is going to be a personal “Can I do this?” challenge. At first it was a challenge and the peer pressure around me was worse than my cravings which to be honest with you I never had. So I started off being vegetarian and then the vegan change for me was more like, look I can do this! It became my lifestyle not just my diet. It became an act of kindness. I was understanding my surroundings. I became a part of something better. It made all the difference in the world. It changed my mood. Which is something that I am not sure your listeners would agree with or have experienced but my mood changed for the better. I felt better about myself. I felt better about my conversion. That change to veganism was one of the biggest and most proud moments in my life. I know that sounds dorky to a lot of people but to me it was a huge accomplishment. I am really really proud of it.”

Dr. Dave: “Actually it doesn’t sound dorky. It’s funny that you said that your mood because I have been doing this show for 2 1/2 years now and I do my daily Periscope broadcast as well so I have a lot of people following me and asking questions. And one of the most common questions these days is; hey Dr. Dave, what do I do if I am sad? What do I do if I am feeling down or depressed? So tell me about your mood. How bad was it before you went vegan? Describe some of your moods that were not good.”

Andre: “The first thing that comes to mind is that I had a short temper. I was aggressive. I always thought I was a nice guy but in lots of ways, looking back, I had no patience at all compared to now. I consider myself a lot more patient and a lot more understanding. It changed my outlook. I think once you make that change and you see every living being as an equal instead of having a sense of entitlement like God put this animal on the Earth so that I can eat it. It really truly does. And I don’t have any scientific background to back up what I am saying. I can only talk about the experience that I had. And I really hope that my friends are listening to this or the friends that I have never met that are listening to this podcast because it’s absolutely awesome! It’s just something I am really proud of. It made sense for me.”

Dr. Dave: “You should be proud. You should definitely be proud. Was it difficult at first? You made the decision to go vegan and I know a lot of people say that they get a lot of flack from friends and from social pressure. You hear things like I need my cheese and I need my yogurt. How long did it take you once you made the decision to do it?”

Andre: “When I first started I thought it was necessary for me to have to explain myself. At BBQ’s especially. I started my journey on Cinco de Mayo. And there were a lot of BBQs and outdoor grilling. At first I was hesitant to even go to these events and be social because I thought I wasn’t going to be accepted or I would have to explain myself for three or four hours at a time. But I went and heard what they had to say and let them get it off of their chest. I thought it sounded ridiculous but I had a good time. I am not here to tell somebody else what they should eat, I am here to tell them why I am not eating it. They may ask me where I get my protein. But I think that is the dumbest question that you can ask someone who has stopped eating meat. Honestly, why do I keep getting asked that question?!” (chuckles)

Dr. Dave: “It is the most commonly asked question. I just look at people right in the eye and say from plants. That’s all I say. I used to go into this tremendous detail but now I just say I get it from plants. The same place the animals get it from. It’s not difficult.”

Andre: “You know, I couldn’t agree more.  A plant based diet offers you everything and more than a non plant based diet. Shopping for myself when I was a single male, I was throwing away about $50 in groceries every single week. I thought going vegan or going vegetarian was going to cost me more because I thought organic food was very expensive but that wasn’t the case at all. I saved money every week, none of my groceries went bad, and I ate fresh fruit every single day. the food that I was putting into my body, I knew where it was coming from and I knew how to pronounce and spell all the ingredients. That was major for me. The resources available online for anyone thinking of starting a plant based diet was incredible and the support online and in the community was incredible. I am still learning. I don’t see a such thing as a perfect first year. We trip, we fall, we make mistakes but we learn and we don’t make those mistakes again. It helps us to coach our friends to make the same decision that we have if they ever choose to do so. I hear a lot of excuses like going vegan is super expensive and I don’t have the budget for it. When in reality, you’re saving money and eating fresh every day. It’s a no brainer.”

Dr. Dave: “You gotta love it. I think you said it beautifully. That’s another common question that I get. People think it’s so expensive and that they can’t afford it. That’s just crazy. You said it. You had meats that you had to throw out. They spoil and they go bad then you can’t eat them. So that was a great point. Andre, tell me a little bit about your 70 year old vegan physician? What does he look like? Does he look healthy? Does he look young?”

Andre: “I will tell you this, I would have never guessed that he was 70 years old. He is in much better shape than I am. He tells me that he runs every morning, 5 miles per day. He enjoys biking. He is healthy and happy. His mood is something I was shooting for. Here I am 39 years old at the time and I was in a bad mood, I was chubby, I was eating crap, smoking, and drinking. And then here’s this guy who is not supposed to look better or thinner than I do and he did! Instead of pressuring me or making me feel bad about my diet, he just told me some facts. He told me, look this has been going on for 20 years and yes medication suppresses the pain but I think your goal is to get rid of the migraines, isn’t it? I said absolutely. And he said just try it. Just try it and let me know what you think. And that’s exactly what happened. He was right…again.”

Dr. Dave: “And if he would have pressured you and said Andre you are crazy for eating this way, you better start eating vegan. If you had felt pressure what would you have done?”

Andre: “I think I would have been more afraid than inspired or motivated. When someone pressures me to do something, more often than not, I don’t. That was what used to be. He really motivated me more. When someone that looks better than you, that’s happier than you, and it’s not a financial thing by any means. I just mean that he wakes up and he has a goal and he is kind and he rescues animals. He’s just a good guy. We never talked about money but he was just like look I suggest this and I think what he really suggested was a lifestyle change. And it changed my mood, it changed my weight, it changed my outlook, it changed the way that I speak to people, and my relationships. Just to give you a quick example, I just had lunch with a veterinarian friend of mine. At first I was nervous. She chose the restaurant and I was nervous that because I didn’t want to make someone else feel uncomfortable. But she sat down in front of me and said, I hope you don’t mind but I don’t normally eat meat but you can order anything you want. And right there I knew it was going to be a great lunch date. It was really cool.”

Dr. Dave: “That’s great! That’s a cool story. If you had to give one bit of advice or wisdom to someone listening to the show right now that is eating animal products? They are listening carefully but they are not sure what to do and they think they don’t really want to change. Just one little piece of advice from Andre. What would your advice be?”

Andre: “I will repeat the one piece of advice I got from the physician I visited. It’s that you have nothing to lose. Honestly, give it a shot! See how you feel at the end of the week. Let it be a personal challenge and see how you feel, see how much money you saved, see how you feel about yourself that you are not a part of this cruelty that’s going on. You know where your food is coming from and you know you’re not hurting anybody. You’re only bettering yourself in every single aspect. Every part of my life has gotten better. I personally guarantee that if I can do it so can you.”

Dr. Dave: “Since we have a couple more minutes, why don’t you talk about another aspect of your life that changed once you went vegan. I’d love to hear that I know you had several.”

Andre: “Sure, my relationship with my family is one. To me that’s number one. How I speak to my mom, how I interact with my family who by the way are not vegan and we had our first vegan Thanksgiving. In the beginning they didn’t understand. They asked a lot of questions. And they expected the old Andre, the no patience for explaining things Andre. The old Andre that would have blown up maybe. But I didn’t. I just sat down and said let me prepare you a vegan meal and see what you think and how you feel. I wish I had scientific proof behind the things I am telling you but it’s just my experience. I just became a happier individual.”

Dr. Dave: “Well that’s ok, like I told you before we went on the air today, I don’t need scientific evidence from you. There is plenty out there. If people do the research, there’s plenty. I wanted to hear it like I am sitting down on the couch next to my friend Andre and hear your exact personal experience. So we don’t even need to go into scientific evidence. What happened to you was incredible. And let me tell you that you are not the only one that I have heard this from. I heave heard it many times from other people that go vegan. It’s a lifechanger. I really want to thank you for your time today Andre and I would really like to have you back another time because I think we have a lot more to talk about. I have one more question that I want to ask you. And that is, you said you just turned 40 right? And you have just celebrated your one year vegan anniversary. The way you look at it now, is there any chance that you would ever go back the other way to being an omnivore and eating animal products? Any chance whatsoever?”

Andre: “No chance, no chance. I will not sacrifice all the good in my life that I gained just to go back to the way things were. And I gotta tell you Dr. Dave there isn’t a day that goes by that I crave animal products. That’s garbage. People will say well don’t you miss this and don’t you miss that? And no I absolutely do not. I would not go back.”

Dr. Dave: “Andre, I don’t know if you realize this or not but you just inspired many many people. And I really appreciate you taking time out of your busy day to spend time with me on The David Madow Lifestyle Show. You are welcome to come back anytime. I have a feeling we just touched the tip of the iceberg here. So Andre thank you so much.”

Andre: “Oh man! I can’t wait. It’s been an absolute pleasure. Thank you so much for inviting me Dr. Dave.”

Dr. Dave: “Great having you Andre.”

Hey, it’s Dr. Dave and I hope you enjoyed that interview. Andre is a really great guy as well as an inspirational person. And he totally changed his life. I hope you enjoyed the episode today. I will see you back next time. Remember, I love ya and keep doing what you’re doing. You’re doing a great job!

136 – Injuries, Running Shoes, Long Life and MORE

Highlights from today’s show…

  1. One of the best ways to improve your running.
  2. What I discovered about injuries.
  3. My best tips on how to live a long life (on my 61st birthday).

Welcome to episode #136 of The David Madow Lifestyle Show. This is the show where I help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier. You’re going to hear some road noise as we get into the show today. It’s going to be a great show today.

I am broadcasting on my birthday in one of my favorite cities in the world. It is hippie road trip part 2, can you guess it? I am in Toronto, Ontario in Canada. It really is one of my favorite cities in the world. It’s up there with Manhattan, San Francisco, and Chicago. I just love these cities. There’s a lot of good walking and a lot of good vegan food.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

Running Shoes

I want to share something with you. For those of you that are in the U.S. and Canada, you know that the U.S. dollar is very strong now compared to the Canadian dollar. I don’t shop too often but I really needed a new pair of running shoes. So I sought out a place on Yelp. I found a place that was a good 20 minute walk from my hotel. I went in and the guy seemed really nice. It’s called Black Toe Running Inc. He asked me a few questions and then offer to put me on a new machine that he had. The machine can tell you the best running shoes for you. I am always up for something new so he put me on this cool high tech machine. I had to walk over a mat in a certain way like 6 or 8 times. And then it came up with the perfect running shoe for me. He brought out a few pairs and I tried them on and I have to tell you every pair I tried on was just about perfect. They felt like I could go out a run a marathon right then. There was no guessing. So I ended up buying a pair of Saucony Triumph shoes. I can’t wait to go out for a run. I thought I was going to get a really good deal but these were marked up to list price for sure. And even though I am getting these at about a 20%-30% discount, there is no question in my mind that I could have done better with the price if I had gone online. However, this guy took so much time and was so knowledgeable and not only that he was so nice. As I have said before on my show and on my scopes, we love doing business with people that we like, people that we can relate to, people that we think are honest, and people that want to help us. Yeah I could have gone online and picked these up. My guess is that I probably could have saved maybe $20 or $30. The guy’s name was Mike and he was the owner of the store. He took so much time with me and was so nice. He never inferred to me that I had to buy anything at all. If you are in business, remember that people like doing business with people that they like and trust. And I certainly liked and trusted him. If you are constantly trying to sell, and pimp your stuff, and talk about you and how great your stuff is, people are not going to buy from you. Just educate, just help, and provide a great service and people will buy from you. I know this podcast is not really a business show but many of you are in business or in sales. Let’s face it! We are selling something every single day. You might now know it. You might be selling yourself in some way. Trying to find a new spouse, or a new job; it could be anything. Keep this in mind. If people like you and people trust you and your body language is right then you are going to make it in this world. I promise you! It’s not too late for you. You are probably doing great already. I know you are doing great already because you are listening to The David Madow Lifestyle Show.

Injuries

I have something else that I want to share with you. Today is a special day for me. I am traveling on my hippie road trip part 2 but it is also my birthday. I turned 61 today. And I feel great! I will admit this. I did have a very tough winter because of my leg injury. I think the leg injury just sucked the energy from other parts of my body. I tried to actually research that online to see if it’s possible. I couldn’t find a definitive answer but I think it might be true. I felt lousy for a good part of the winter. But it’s funny how my leg is starting to feel better every day and my body feels better. So just a bit of advice to you, if anybody has been undergoing some type of medical issue or injury, even though only one area may be affected it seems to affect the whole body. There is no separate system in our body. In other words if you hurt a part of your body nothing else is affected. I really believe that when you have a medical issue or injury everything is affected so be careful out there please.

I am walking around Toronto on my first day of being 61 years old. And it feels good. The sun is out and I am getting a lot of steps in on my Fitbit. Yesterday, I walked over 20,000 steps. That’s not an incredible number of steps but but for me coming off the injury that’s pretty good. My goal is to hit 12,500 steps per day. Again, it’s not a lot of steps but it’s a start. As I start to get into more walking and running, I will pick it up even more.

Long Life

So how does Dr. Dave do it? How does Dr. Dave turn 61 and still feel like he is 35 or 40?

Here are a few tips…

  1. First and foremost, please live your life the way you want to live it. I have talked to you about this before if you are a regular listener. If you are a regular listener you know I have talked about doing what you want in life and being happy. Living your life the way you want to live it! If you are happy don’t let any other people tell you how to live your life. Don’t you dare let them do that please! Right now I am on hippie road trip part 2, 61 years old, driving up to Toronto, Canada from Reisterstown, MD because I am speaking tomorrow. I could have easily taken a plane. I could have gone to the airport, flow from Baltimore to Toronto. I could have come here and spoken tomorrow and then just leave on a plane. I could have done that. Most people would say that is normal but I am NOT normal anymore. I am living my life the way Dr. Dave/Mr. Vaygan/Hippie road traveler wants to live. When I say do what you want to do that doesn’t mean to the detriment of other people. I try to be super kind to other people and not only to people but to the non human inhabitants on this Earth as well. I am talking about the beautiful animals on the planet. I just don’t eat them anymore, I don’t wear them as clothing anymore, and it works for me. It makes me feel really great about who I am and why I am here. The animals appreciate too because there are several animals living on this planet today that would not have been living had I been eating them. Now, you might say that doesn’t mean anything. There are billions of animals on the planet so maybe you saved a few? That’s a drop in the bucket! Well, tell that to the animals that I have saved. Tell that to them. I think they would appreciate it. The more people that do not eat animals or cause harm and suffering to animals, the more animals that will be here to thank us for not taking their lives and for not causing them incredible undue suffering and horrible lives.
  2. Get out there and move your body. I talk about the “Magic 4”. If you can get out and walk at least 4 miles each day you will notice a big difference in how you feel, how you look, your psyche, and your mindset. Trust me, it really works. For those of you who have started doing this, you know exactly what I am talking about.
  3. The next thing is eating. I have talked a little about this so I won’t go in depth but as you know I am vegan so I do not consume animals. But I also try to not consume too much processed food. Whole foods that come from the Earth are the best foods. Lots of greens, fruits, nuts, beans, and seeds. I think that this is what God gave us to eat. I don’t think that he/she gave us animals to cut up and mutilate and put into our bodies. I just don’t think that’s the way we are supposed to do it.
  4. I also believe incredibly in doing yoga and meditation.
  5. Forgiveness has been a tremendous one. I just turned 61 and have lived fairly long so far. Over the course of my life, there have been people who have done not so nice things to me. Whether they are in business or whether they are from an old relationship; there are people that have treated me poorly. In the old days I probably would have held a grudge or want to see some kind of revenge. These days I forgive and move on. Instead of hating or having a bad feeling for anybody, I just let it all go. And when you do that it makes a tremendous difference in your life. This is a big tip from me. Let it go please. Promise me you will do that. You will see a big change in your life. Don’t get involved with crazies please.

I also wanted to make you aware that a lot of people are checking out my Products page where I list the products that I recommend. I am not personally selling these products. I have Fitbit watches, protein powder, and I will adding more things that I recommend such as the B12 supplement that I use. You will be buying directly from Amazon and not from me, I just want to make it easy for you. So check back regularly since I will be adding more products. Every product there is something that I personally either use myself or believe in. And of course while you’re there, the best seller is my Oy Vaygan t-shirt. I donate $2 for every shirt sold to an animal sanctuary named the Catskill Animal Sanctuary.

So I am out of breath. I am in Toronto, I am walking, and I am almost back to my hotel. I am about to put on my brand new Saucony shoes. I have been running for 35 or 40 years now and I have never worn a pair of Saucony shoes so I am super excited. I won’t be recommending these on my site because when you buy a pair of running shoes you need to go into a really knowledgeable store. Where the person running totally understands how to figure out how you are striking the ground, your gait, what your body is doing when your feet are hitting the ground. It’s really important. So I am not going to put mine up there since everyone has different feet. Just because I like them and they work for me does not mean they will work for you. Generally if you go into one of the large chain sporting goods stores they won’t have people there that will know how to fit you into the perfect running shoe. Go into a specialty running store with knowledgeable people. Usually these are the stores in the community that stage races and they have people in there that are actually runners. Get tested and fitted properly. And if they take the time and are helpful, buy at least your first pair of shoes from them. They are passionate about running and deserve to make a little profit. I like to try to help them out.

I think I packed a lot of stuff into today’s episode. I am going to get walking. Every time I walk, I am going to get walking more. It keeps me young!

135 – Goals, Highways and Vegans

Highlights from today’s show…

  1. Join the selfie party on Facebook!
  2. What I discovered in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
  3. Get my free goals worksheet to help you reach your dreams.

Hey there it’s Dr. Dave and welcome to The David Madow Lifestyle Show. This is the show where I help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier. It’s episode #135 and right now I am on US Route 15 heading north through the beautiful state of Pennsylvania on my way to Toronto, Ontario. It’s hippie road trip part 2! I had such an incredible time on part 1 driving from Phoenix, AZ to Memphis, TN between speaking gigs. And this is part 2. I am speaking in Toronto on Saturday and I could have flown there, worked, and then flown back. But I said to Yoko that I think I want to do part 2 and she said “if you want to do it you should do it.” So I thank my wife Yoko for totally understanding me and “getting” me. Maybe most people don’t, I don’t know. But she really “gets” me. So I had her blessing to go on hippie road trip part 2, so here I am. I have an incredible show for you today. I am going to pack a bunch of stuff in. So fasten your seatbelt, we have a lot to talk about.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

First, I want you to do me a favor. I don’t ask for favors too often. But I look at my statistics and I know how many listeners I have, where they come from, but I don’t know exactly who is listening and when they are listening. For example, I don’t know that John Smith is listening right now from Dayton, OH. They don’t give me that. So I am going to ask you a favor. I want you to pause this podcast right now. And I want you to take a selfie. That’s right! Take a picture of yourself and I want you to post it on my Facebook page. It will take you 2 minutes if that. You can follow me or you can friend me. But I want you to post a selfie so I will be able to see you and all the cool people that are listening to this podcast. If you don’t want to post it, you can email it to me at rundrdave@gmail.com. So do that right now…

selfie, selfie stick

Highways

So I am driving on US Route 15 going through Pennsylvania and I saw this sign a few miles ago that was advertising for a restaurant that is in Williamsport, PA. Which is where the International Little League Headquarters are located. So I saw this billboard for a restaurant named Olive Tree. I was driving by it quickly but noticed it said home cooked vegetarian and vegan meals in Downtown Williamsport. That’s all I had to hear! Coincidentally it was coming up on lunch time and I was getting hungry. So I got on my Waze and searched for it and then programmed in my GPS. When I got there it was nothing like I thought it would be. It was a very tiny restaurant and shop in a residential/business area of downtown. I walked in and there was a small counter and a few tables and chairs. A woman greeted me and I walked in. I assumed it was the person that owned it since no one else was in there.

Vegans

So as I am looking around checking the place out, the woman kind of frantically tells me to sit down. I said ok no problem. So I decided to sit at the front counter. So I asked her for some change so that I could feed the parking meter and when I came back in she not only had menus but also a huge board of all the specials and soups, and entrees, and salads and sandwiches. You name it! It was incredible. So I told her that I saw the sign a few miles back that said vegan and what can you make really good that’s vegan. So she asked me what types of food I liked and I told her that I typically eat ethnic foods at home. I decided on a bowl of artichoke soup that was highly recommended and a vegan gyro (after being assured that it was completely vegan). So I took my laptop out and began doing some writing. A few minutes later my soup came it. I took a picture of it. It looked beautiful and my first spoonful was delicious. It also came with homemade bread with a touch of cinnamon. So the woman, her name was Sophie, began talking to me. She was from Greece and tries to go home to visit as much as she can. We were talking about the restaurant and I asked her about the sign and how does it do? And she told me all about that and how she used to own a pizza place. Sophia and I continued talking and she was so incredibly kind. I got only about 2 to 3 minutes of work done but it was such a cool experience sitting down in a restaurant in Williamsport.

And this is exactly why I am doing my hippie road trips. If I was in a plane I would never get to sample these things. If I were on a place I would not get to experience this country. I would never get to see the beautiful mountains in northern Pennsylvania. It’s beautiful here! I have to give this are a plug. If you drive up US 15 through Pennsylvania into New York, do it. Don’t put things off. Life goes by too quickly. I know you have plans for the future, but do it now! You can do a road trip very inexpensively.  Sophia and I were talking about how we both want to get a recreational vehicle. If you are ever in the Williamsport area of Pennsylvania visit The Olive Tree owned by Sophia Daskalakis at 412 Williams Street.

Goals (free download)

There is something major I want to share with you. One of the reasons that I am able to do the things that I do now is that I came up with goals. I wrote them down and studied them very carefully. I read my goals every single day. It’s a lifechanger and you heard this from me before. I have had a lot of people recently say, “Dave, I want to do what you’re doing. I want to have goals. I want to live my life exactly the way that I want to live and not the way somebody tells me. I have a lot of goals and I don’t really know how to make them come true. Are you telling me that if I just write down my goals and read them they will come true? How do I do it?” I used to write them in a notebook. I do read my goals every single day. As old goals become reality, I formulate new goals. I am always a goal oriented person. But, since there has been some questioning and people aren’t really sure where to write them, I have come up with a goals worksheet. It’s actually 5 pages. It’s a very very simple goals worksheet that takes you from the start to actually coming up with the exact goals. These are my personal goals worksheets. I made them for you just because so many of you have been asking me about these. So how do you get them? Click HERE to grab your free copy. I recommend that you print it out. I do almost everything online but in this case I recommend that you print out the goals worksheet. It should come to five pages. Fill them out. Take your time. It doesn’t have to be done today so take your time and do it right. And then the instructions are on there to read them every single day. Once you do this, your life will change. You will see it. It’s a guarantee from me!

I do have my conversation starting “Oy Vaygan” T-shirts on my website now. If you don’t believe me that these are conversation starters. Believe me! I went to the Baltimore Veg Fest last weekend and I wore my “Oy Vaygan” and I had a lot of people come up to me and say I love your shirt. Where can I get one? It was a a big hit. And not just a veg fests, I have had flight attendants tell me they love it, checking into hotels people tell me they love it. And you don’t have to be “vaygan” to wear the shirt.

This episode went by so fast. When I am recording these I have so much fun. I love helping you, I love teaching, motivating, and I love inspiring. Next episode, I have some incredible stuff for you.

Make sure you subscribe to the podcast. So each time a new episode comes out it will be downloaded automatically to your device. It’s really simple. Until next time, I’m Dr. Dave. You know what I am going to say cause it’s true…I love ya!

134 – Miracles, Hippie Road Trip 2 and Much More

Highlights from today’s show…

  1. The four words that I NEVER want to hear you say!
  2. How do you get a miracle? I will tell you on this episode.
  3. Hippie Road Trip Part 2 is coming up soon!

I’m drivin’ in my car! It seems like lately that it’s been my home away from home. It’s episode #134, welcome! I am Dr. Dave also known as Mr. Vaygan. This is the show where I help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier. Welcome to the David Madow Lifestyle Show. I have a lot to cram into the next 20 minutes or so.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

“I wish I could”

I want to start off by sharing four words with you that I never ever want you to say. Take these out of your vocabulary. The fours words I never want you to say are “I wish I could _____________”. Here’s the deal. I don’t want you to say I wish I could because I believe in you. I know you can do practically anything that you want. A short time ago I was in Florida and we were watching a guy doing some paddle boarding. A guy I was with said to me “I wish I could do that”. And I looked at him and said “what do you mean you wish you could do it? Why don’t you just do it? What’s stopping you?” He had all these excuses like he’s busy at work and he has the family. And I am thinking to myself, if you want to do something like paddle boarding then you should do it. I am really goals oriented and the things I am doing now came about because I had goals and dreams. I have had dreams which I turned into goals and I made them come true. For the past 25 to 30 years, I have been working on goals all the time. That’s the way I live my life. If I want to do something, I turn it into a goal.

Speaking of goals, I have an actual worksheet that should be ready in a few weeks. A lot of people ask me how I do it. And I have always told people to come up with their goals, write them down, and look at them every day. And yes that definitely works. But I use an easy to follow worksheet that actually helps you come up with your goals. It explains how to start and goes over what some of your barriers are. I am in the process of developing that now. It will be ready in a couple weeks or so. It will be totally free. It will be on my website when it’s ready and I will let you know. I don’t want you to say I wish I could. I want you to do things.

Website Update

And speaking of my website. My website has been updated with a lot of really cool things. I have a section now called Products. This section came about because I recently got a Fitbit Blaze and I love it. It tracks what I do all day long so I don’t have to think about it. I know how many hours I sleep, how many steps I take, and how many calories I burn. It’s a great instrument. There are other models too. For example, if you don’t need to watch face, you can use the Fitbit Alta. So I put these on my website with a direct link to them on Amazon. Also on my product page is a vegan protein powder that I use. I stopped using it for a while but after I stopped I noticed that I was getting tired, I was achy, and a lot of weird things were happening to me. So once a day I mix it into a smoothie and drink it. And it’s made an incredible difference. Again there will be a link which will take you right to Amazon to purchase.  I am trying to make my website really easy to use. And while you’re there please take a look at my brand new t-shirts that I designed. They are under the section T-shirts. And for every t-shirt that I sell, I am donating $2 to an animal sanctuary. Right now I am donating to the Catskill Animal Sanctuary in upstate New York. But I might change it up in the future. I have been there personally and visited. I love it there. It’s a first class animal sanctuary and they are doing great things for animals there. So for every t-shirt that’s sold you are helping the animals too. So wear your lime green “Oy Vaygan” t-shirt proudly. And be prepared for the comments. Every time I wear my shirt someone always tells me that they like it. So I hope you get one. We want to change the world one person at a time.

Hippie Road Trip Part 2

I have just announced my #hippieroadtrip part 2. I had such a great time on my hippie road trip from Phoenix to Little Rock that I am going to do another one. I will be driving from my home in Reisterstown, MD to Toronto, Ontario. I am going to do it in 2 days each way. I will stop of somewhere about half way. I’m going to be learning, chilling, recording, being creative, and “scoping”. I want you to do this with me. I want you to be part of it. I believe you learn more about yourself traveling this way rather than being in a cramped plane.

Miracles

I want to share something with you that I learned on my first hippie road trip. Originally I was supposed to end my trip in Little Rock, AK. The day before I decided to end the trip in Memphis, TN instead. So I took an extra day and met up with some friends in Memphis. But I had to arrange to have my rental car for an extra day and to drop it off in a different location. So I had Hope from my office call them to arrange it. But instead of being just $145 or so for the extra 24 hours, it was going to be $1,145. That’s right! An additional $1000. So of course we all thought that was ridiculous. So I had her call them back and no matter what she said they would not budge. So instead of keeping the same car, we decided that I would return the car at the airport and then pick up a different car for the next day for $125. But I still didn’t want to have to go to the airport and stand in lines to pick up another car. It would have been an incredible hassle. So when I got to the airport I decided to try something. As soon as I pulled up, I got out of the car and greeted him with a big smile. I look at him without hesitating and said “hey, I have a big favor to ask you.” And he said “what?”. So I said “I need a miracle. Can you work a miracle for me right now? He looked at me and without even thinking, he said “YES, what do you need?!” As soon as he said yes, I knew I was going to be fine. So I explained the whole story to him. And asked if there was any way he could work a miracle so that I could take the same car to Memphis? He looked at me and without hesitation again, he said “sure we can do that for you.” I said “that’s great! Thank you so much.” He instructed me to drive a little further ahead to the kiosk and assured me that the attendant in the kiosk would help me with my request. So I drove ahead and explained to him the situation. Within three minutes of checking my license and the rental car agreement he gave them back and said I was good to go. I gave the biggest hug ever J These guys worked a miracle for me. Now remember 24 hours earlier, they wanted to charge me $1000 extra to do the same thing. I got my miracle for about $125. Why am I telling you this? The point is that if you want something badly enough, ask somebody in a really nice way. People want to help you. People want to make your life better. Just like they want people to make their life better. If you approach it in a positive way, it works. If you’re not confrontational and ask people nicely they’re going to help you out. Ask for a miracle! Let me know how it works!

133 – [Explicit] Sleep, Protein, Fitbit and Mothers

WARNING: EXPLICIT MATERIAL

Highlights from today’s show…

  1. Dr. Dave is on the road again! Find out about day 3 of his hippie road trip currently in progress.
  2. Protein and sleep. I share the results of my interesting research.
  3. The absolute best advice I can give you…

Hey there! How are ya? Welcome to episode #133. This is the show where I help you live stronger, longer, healthier, and happier. If you’re a regular listener, welcome back! I appreciate you. If you are a new listener, thanks so much for being with me. And for the first time in 133 episodes, I have to give you a warning at the beginning of this. There is a very good chance that this is going to be explicit. So if language offends you, or if you are in a public area or with kids, and don’t want to hear certain words; I am giving you the warning right now. This will most likely become explicit because I have got something that I want to share with you and there will be some language involved.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

It’s Day 3 of my #hippieroadtrip. I was in Santa Fe, NM yesterday and let me tell you something, Santa Fe is such a great town. I definitely want to spend more time in Santa Fe. Yesterday was my first time ever being there. I’ve driven through New Mexico when I helped my son Evan relocate to California. But Santa Fe is very cool and it’s definitely a place worth revisiting. Especially when I am with my wife Yoko and I have more time. My hippie road trip is 5 days going from Phoenix, AZ to Little Rock, AK in between speaking gigs. I some time constraints and I just don’t have time to stop at any one place and do a whole lot. I would have loved to have done some hiking in Santa Fe. There is good hiking all around the Santa Fe area. But I just don’t have the time.

People have been asking my why I call this the hippie road trip. And it’s just simply because these 5 days are all mine and other than having to be on stage to speak Friday morning, I don’t have any destinations planned and no reservations.

I am now entering Texas. And I just thought about this but I just lost another hour changing time zones. So I may get to my destination an hour later but it’s ok because I have nowhere to be 🙂

So what I have been doing is that the afternoon that I am traveling, I go on to www.hotels.com and finding a last minute deal. And it’s been working out incredibly well. There are deals to be had. And if you have some flexibility in your travel, it’s great. For tonight, I got a hotel suite for $69 plus tax. C’mon now!! That is incredible! And I am loving it.

So enough about my trip, you want to hear some good information. So today I am going to share a few things with you that are really important.

  • I elluded to this a few episodes ago, but I have been having some trouble with my sleep lately. I’ve never had a sleep problem until now. So here is what happens, I will get up sometimes say about 2am. I’ll get up to go to the bathroom and then when I get back to bed, I can’t fall asleep. So in other words, I sleep really well until that time. I just about fall asleep when my head hits the pillow but when I wake up to go to the bathroom, I get back and can’t fall asleep. It’s been bothering me for at least a few weeks now. A couple weeks ago I got a Fitbit. And I am learning about my sleep pattern. On the first night of my hippie road trip, the same thing happened. I woke up and couldn’t fall back to sleep. I’m tossing and turning. So I went online because I was very curious What I found was very interesting. I read several articles that said a lot of times it has to do with low blood sugar and not enough protein. It said that what you might want to try is to eat some nuts or nut butter. So I ate a big spoonful of almond butter and I ate some pistachio nuts and so I laid back down in bed. Sure enough I fell asleep and I slept really well. I don’t know if that’s the problem but it happened again last night and I tried it again last night and I fell asleep. I believe I get plenty of protein. I am not getting my protein from animals but I have been vegan for about 2 years now and this just started happening. I do take some supplements. I take B12, D3, and fatty acids. I don’t think I am protein deficient but the nuts and the nut butter in the middle of the night did seem to help. I’ll be looking into this further and will report back to you as soon as I have some more information. But I thought this was interesting. I’m gonna check it out. I do have a physical coming up in a few months.
  • I’m going into week 2 with my Fitbit and I love it. I bought the Fitbit Blaze. I’m going to recommend something but I am still researching and trying it out. In another week or two, I am going to be recommending (or not recommending) the one I am wearing or others models of Fitbits. Don’t go out and buy a Fitbit yet if you don’t have one. I am doing some extensive testing with mine, researching others, and I will let you know what I think is the best Fitbit for you. As I said before I love it. It tracks my steps per day, my sleep, and my pulse rate. Not only will I recommend them but I will be including a link directly to them so that you may check them out.
  • I did a Periscope broadcast yesterday when I was driving from Flagstaff, AZ to Santa Fe, NM. I had a lot of time of my hands so I did a Periscope broadcast. There were some really interesting topics and I had about 120 people watching. I had a great audience. Somebody asked me during the broadcast, “How do [you] have such a positive outlook on life? How do [you] stay so motivated?” I had an answer for them and I want to share this with you today because I thought it was a great answer and I think it will really help a lot of people. It’s something I have discovered over the last several years but I have been more in tune to it over the past few months. And so when someone asks me “So Dave, how can you stay so positive? How can you be in such a good mood?” Look, I am only human and I get in bad moods. I never get in really bad moods. I’m not moody. But sometimes you wake up and you just think it’s not your day. For the most part, I am really positive and like to make the most out of every day. So my answer to the person who asks how I can remain so positive especially with all the people around you who are not so positive and are downright negative was this I learned how to get the mother fuckers out of my life. There we go. I said it. That may be the first time in the history of the David Madow Lifestyle Show that I used that word. But let me repeat it because it bears repeating. I learned how to get the mother fuckers out of my life! And when I say mother fuckers, I am talking about the people that just drain your fucking energy out of your system. Either their negative. Now I am not saying they are bad people but maybe they don’t mesh with you or your lifestyle. They are pessimistic or something like that. I get those mother fuckers out of my life. Or actually maybe they even wean themselves out because they are not for me and I am not for them. It doesn’t mean they are bad. It just means that the way they choose to live their lives and the things we do are different. Perhaps very different. So I have learned that they need to be “photoshopped” out of my life. I don’t mean them any harm at all. I try to inspire and I try to motivate people. I don’t eat meat but as I have said many times that doesn’t mean you are a bad person. But the people that want to go against me and say that all I talk about is being vegan, those are the people that I really don’t want to have anything to do with. They try to bring me down and they are very negative. I just don’t need them in my life. I have said it and will say it again if you have people, and you probably do, but get the mother fuckers out of your life. When you are able to do this your life will be so much better. And you will get to live how I am living. I truly try to stay and hang out with people like you. If you are listening to me that means I am either entertaining you or maybe you are trying to learn something or maybe it’s both. Many people have listened to my podcasts in the past and they probably said to themselves “Eh, that guy is full of shit! Who does he thing he is?!” And that’s ok with me because I am not for them. I cannot be for everybody. I don’t try to be for everybody. I don’t try to please everybody. It’s impossible. And I realize that I can’t please everybody. Not everybody is not going to be aligned with me. Not everybody is going to like my lifestyle and not everybody is going to agree with me. When you have that attitude and you realize that, let me tell you something, your life totally will change. I didn’t invent the term mother fucker but I have to admit when I said it, it’s almost like something was lifted from my shoulder. A big weight was lifted. If you’re in a public place or with your kids you probably don’t want to scream it but when I said it on Periscope yesterday I was literally yelling it. And it felt good to scream that. It really felt fantastic! And when I did I think I helped a lot of people. I apologized on Periscope for using that language but you know what the reaction was? People came back on and said “hey that’s totally fine”. I owe you the best. I take my podcast and my broadcasts very seriously. That doesn’t mean that I don’t joke around. I want to give you the best and I want to give you the true me. And if I try to censor myself and try to pretend to be this innocuous person that everybody loves but really nobody loves because you try to please everybody. I have learned more lately that I am going to be totally myself. Yeah I might make some people angry and I might lose some listeners or viewers but you know something? Since I decided to be totally me, I just feel so much more at peace. I don’t have to worry about pleasing anybody because I please the people that are aligned with me and the ones that are not and don’t like what I have to say, they go away and they find another podcast. That’s ok. I urge you to please try to live this lifestyle. That does not mean you have to walk around saying mother fucker all the time. I certainly don’t. I don’t walk around saying that. I am not going to hold back because people feel that it’s not proper and I shouldn’t do that. If I alienate a few people along the way, it’s ok. That means they didn’t want to see the real me.  I feel so good talking about this. It’s great that you’re still with me because that means I am resonating in some way with you. I am telling you something, I know you and you’ve got a least one mother fucker that is getting you down. I know it for sure. Am I right? So here’s my advice. My advice is to ease them away from you. I don’t want you to stop talking to a family member. If it’s a family member, you still love them, you still see them maybe during the holidays, but you just don’t spend as much time as you are now with them.

132 – Buffets, Persistence, Grand Canyon and More

Highlights from today’s show…

  1. Dr. Dave is on the road again! Find out about his hippie road trip currently in progress.
  2. Why I think everyone should stay away from buffets.
  3. Repeat after me. NEVER give up. Why persistence is the best policy.

Welcome back to the David Madow Lifestyle Show, I am David Madow a.k.a. Mr. Vaygan! This is episode #132. And this could perhaps be one of the most fun episodes that I have ever recorded. And one of the most fun episodes for you to listen to. Let me explain why!

I am recording this from my car and I am on day 2 of what I call my hippie road trip! My #hippieroadtrip from Phoenix, AZ to Little Rock, AK. I had a gig speaking in Phoenix and I had a choice after that. I had a gig speaking all day long in Little Rock, AK this coming Friday (April 15th). I thought, well I could get back on a plane and do what I always do; head home for a few days then fly to Little Rock. Or I could get into my rental car and take 5 days to do whatever I want as long as I make it to Little Rock in time. So yesterday I left my hotel in Phoenix, AZ and I got in my rental car and started driving north on I17. I didn’t know exactly where I was going to go. I originally started out heading towards Albuquerque, NM but then that I would probably kick myself if I didn’t visit Grand Canyon National Park. It is one of the coolest places on the planet. So on Day 1 of my hippie road trip I drove about 3 1/2 hours to the Grand Canyon. I stopped off and got some food and loaded up on healthy snacks on the way there. I did a 3 mile daytime hike on the Bright Angel trail. It doesn’t sounds like a lot but 3 miles in the Grand Canyon is not a walk in the park. Hiking out of the canyon is all uphill and it can be steep and relentless. But I did it and it was a beautiful day. There was a little rain and even some snow during my hike. If you have never seen the Grand Canyon, write this down in your goals – “I will visit the Grand Canyon in the next year”. And I want you to do some hiking there because it is just awesome. You will never do anything else like it. You will love it!

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

I am on day 2 of my journey already. I am currently staying in Flagstaff, AZ. Last night I dined at a great Himalayan restaurant. When you make last minute reservations for things like hotels you can get some great deals from sites like www.hotels.com or www.hoteltonight.com. I got a very nice hotel room for about $60 for the night. It was very clean and very quiet and I got a great night’s rest.

On this hippie road trip, I did not make any plans or any reservations. I can do whatever I want and it’s such a great feeling. Several of you message me saying that you were living vicariously through me or that you wish you could do this. Here is where I take issue with that. I want you to do something like that because what is life? Is life working every day? Making money and working harder and making more money? To be spent when? When you are older? We have to live life to the fullest. It can’t always be about making money, and working harder, and being successful, and having things. Life cannot be about that. The reason I am able to do a trip like this (and other trips like this) is because 1) I have been very smart with my money over the years. I spend much less than I make and I am able to save a lot and invest a lot. And 2) because my lifestyle is such that I just don’t require a lot of money to live. You can do this kind of stuff too. Don’t live vicariously through me. It doesn’t require a lot of money. You might be saying to yourself, “but I have a job and if I take time off, I will get fired.” You have to put your priorities in place. I am not saying to get fired but I honestly believe there are ways that you can work out your schedule and work out your life. If you never take the time to figure out how to do it, you will never get there. I am looking around the desert and it’s just beautiful and peaceful. I want you to be able to experience something like this. Please just try it! I am having a blast! I am sure you can feel my enthusiasm. This is one of the coolest things I have ever done.

Now, let’s talk about eating for a moment. When doing a trip like this, I try to eat really healthy. And you can eat healthy on the road. I always try to stock up from a natural foods store such as Whole Foods or Natural Grocer (common in the western part of the U.S.). One thing I always try to do as well is to eat ethnic food as much as possible. Because when you eat Indian, Thai, or Vietnamese you can almost always get vegan options. I am totally plant based and I don’t eat meat even when I am on the road. I do recommend that you stay away from buffets whether you are traveling or not. It has been proven, psychologically speaking, that when you eat at a buffet you are going to eat 28% more food than if you went to a regular restaurant and just ordered off the menu. I am guilty too! I know that when I go to an Indian buffet, I eat more than I should. It’s interesting because I know on one of the Facebook groups I am involved in back home in Reisterstown, MD, a lot of people are fighting for a Golden Corral buffet restaurant. And they were very upset when a chinese buffet closed up just a short time ago. But I am going to say to you, as my friend and as my listener, let’s not go to buffets. You will eat more appetizers, more entrees, and even probably more of the desserts too.

I also want to talk to you just a bit about putting things off. I know what you are thinking. You are listening to me and thinking this sounds great. My advice to you is that there is no better time to do it then now. When you make your mind up that you are going to do something I want you to do it. And not only for a road trip like this but for life. For example, when I first started this podcast, I have a very small number of listeners. I can count them on one hand – mom, dad, my wife Yoko, and maybe a few others if I was lucky. In the first couple episodes, I would see the statistics and they were not very good. And it would have been very easy for me to say “oh, you know this thing just didn’t really work out for me, I need to give it up, I need to do something else. And these days we are a society that wants instant gratification. You want things to happen right away and if they don’t happen right away then you’re on to the next thing. Whether it’s learning how to play guitar, speak a language, starting a podcast, starting a new business, whatever. It could be anything. But here’s what I am going to tell you, I want you to persist. I want you to keep going. Because if I had given up my podcast; well, I wouldn’t be speaking to you today and I wouldn’t have the following that I have today. But I knew that if I just kept this thing going, and gave good information, and connected with people, I knew my listenership would grow. And I was right! I went from a podcast that started with just a handful of listeners to a podcast now that has YOU and people from all over the world listening to every episode. I look at my statistics but I am not obsessed with them. The most important thing is that I am giving a good information every week and that I am connecting with you. But every week now it’s growing. The point is not to brag about my podcast but to tell you that I could have just given this thing up. But I didn’t and I am going in the right direction. Whatever it is that you are trying to do, please don’t give up. I want you to persist and keep it going. Forget about the instant gratification that just doesn’t seem to happen. I know it happens in the movies and on TV in reality shows, and sometimes with people but in general we have to work for what we want to get. Whatever you are doing, don’t give up quickly. I promise you it will work for you.

Thank you so much for being with me on my hippie vaygan road trip day number 2. I love sharing this stuff with you. It’s fun and if you can learn something from it that’s even better. Until next time…

– Dr. Dave

131 – The Fitbit, Crazy Road Trip and Dear Vegan

Welcome back to The David Madow Lifestyle Show. This is episode #131 and it’s great to have you with me here today.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

I have a lot of great stuff for you on today’s show. First, I want to give a shout out to my good friend Don Robertson of EarthSave Baltimore for allowing me to play my brand new song, Dear Vaygan, at his pot-luck dinner last night. It was the first time that I had played this song in front of a live audience. I got a great response with lots of laughter and applause so I think it went really well. I will be going back to EarthSave Baltimore on June 25th to give a great talk titled, “How to Thrive on a Plant Based Lifestyle”. If you are local to the Maryland area, I highly recommend that you get there and check it out (register here).

By the time you listen to this podcast, I will be driving from Phoenix, AZ to Little Rock, AK in between speaking gigs. I have about 5-6 days to do this little road trip. I am not making any reservations. I am just going to go ahead and follow my energy and see where it takes me. As long as I make it to Little Rock, AK by Thursday, I will be ok. So I have time to hang out and hopefully check out some really cool places. I will be listening to a lot of music and hopefully some good podcasts as well. I will be working as needed. I will be taking lots of really cool pictures. I am also taking my hiking boots, some cash, and my recorder because I will most likely be journaling the trip in some way. I will be completely by myself. I just pray that the weather will be good and the traffic will be clear. This is going to be really really fun!

Now, let me explain why I am outside right now. I am in Reisterstown, Maryland currently and it’s early April but it is a very cold and windy day for April. Ordinarily, I would not be out here today taking my walk. I probably would have come up with some excuse why I need to stay inside and do my exercise. But when it gets to be Spring, you are just ready for some warmer weather. I am ready to throw on some shorts and a tshirt and do some walking or running. My leg is getting a little bit better as we speak. So I am able to do a tiny bit of running. I am working my way into it. I hope it’s ready for the Bay2Breakers 12k Race on May 15th in San Francisco, CA.

Anyhow, the reason I am out here today is that I got myself a new present. It’s something that I have been thinking about getting for a few years but I never wanted to mess with it. But I finally purchased a Fitbit. They’ve come a long way. I bought a Fitbit Blaze and I love this thing. It looks like an Apple watch which is what I liked about it but it costs a third of the price. I paid about $200 for this thing. It doesn’t do everything that an Apple watch does but that’s ok because I have everything I need at my fingertips. First of all, it tells the time. It tracks the number of steps I take per day and tracks your sleep. It also sync up with my iPhone so that I can see when a call is coming in or control my music. I am sure I am missing things, it does a lot more than I am mentioning. A few episodes ago (Episode #129), I was talking about how I use the scale as a fitness instrument. Just like the speedometer in my car that tells me how fast I am going, I like to see how I am doing. The scale does that for me and now I have another tool on my wrist that tells me how many steps a day I am taking. It is recommended that you take 10,000 steps per day to get in your aerobic exercise each day. As we speak, I am up to 8494 and it’s only about 4pm so I have quite a bit of time to get another 1500 steps in. That’s going to be my goal to get in at least 10,000 steps a day. I will crank it up and do more as my leg gets better. That’s a decent start for me. The bottom line is I compete with myself. For example, the other day at about midday I saw that I only had a few thousand steps and I said to myself, “I’ve got to get outside now and do some walking so I can get up to 10,000 steps. Now here’s my point, had I not had this Fitbit, I probably would have said, “you know, it’s too cold today. It’s windy and it’s April. This is bs and I don’t feel like going out.” I would have probably come up with some excuse as to why I did not have to go out that day. But since I have the Fitbit, it is almost forcing me, or at least strongly suggesting, to push me to get to 10,000 steps. It gave me the nudge to get outside and do that. I have talked to you about the”Magic 4″ and I have been saying this for years. Way before the Fitbit was even invented. If you can get out and walk 4 miles per day, you are going to feel great. Not only physically but mentally too. I still stick to this and try to do at least 4 miles every day. I have been saying this since I wrote my book back in 2007.

Don’t rush out and buy the Fitbit just yet. Give me a few weeks and I will have a full recommendation for you. I am also working on recommendations for a few other products. I don’t make any money on these. When I recommend something it’s not because I get a bonus or commission or anything like that. I recommend things because I use them and because I recommend it for you. I would never recommend a product just because I am getting paid for it.

By the way, I am seriously considering coming up with an updated version of my book, Impress the World with Your Body in Seven Days. Back in 2007 when I wrote it, to this day it is still a good short book that tells you how to live a healthy lifestyle. But, back then I was not vegan. I was still eating some fish and a little bit of meat. I think I talked about chicken or fish in the book, and if I update it, I will of course have a chapter in there about being plant based and what to eat as opposed to eating things like sushi, sashimi, and chicken.I wouldn’t talk about these things in the updated version. I never knew how horrible the egg and poultry industry was. So I will never recommend eating eggs or chicken. Otherwise, most of the stuff is really relevant. I would include more about some of the stuff I am doing now like meditation, yoga, and setting goals. And I would probably change the title of the book. So if you have a title to suggest, I would love to hear it. But again, I am so busy these days I am not sure I will have the time to do this. But it’s kinda on my list because I think I have so much to teach and to show people. I think that if I updated this a bit and retitled it, I think it could breathe new life into the book world and the health and lifestyle sections.

So I am on my trip from Phoenix to Little Rock and it’s going to be great. I will be doing a lot of cool stuff from the road. According to Google, it’s about 18 to 19 hours of driving so I think if I split it up and do 5 or 6 hours a day, I should still have plenty of time to screw around and may even get to my destination early.

I think I covered everything I wanted to share with you today. I am excited! I have some cool stuff coming up soon. By the way, if you have a friend that you think may benefit from my show please feel free to share it with them. The easiest way to share is to go to my site at www.davidmadow.com and send them the link. All of my podcasts are up on the website starting with the most recent. And not only that but there are also transcripts for each show so if you are not an audio person you can go read them as well. There are also usually links and photos for things that you may want to check out. If you friends are really tech savvy. Tell them to go to iTunes and search for my show. They can click subscribe and a new show will be downloaded for them each week on Monday when it is released. Thanks so much for listening. Until next time…

130 – Help Yourself – The Coolest Cookbook Ever feat. Ruby Roth

Welcome back to Episode #130 of The David Madow Lifestyle Show. As you know, this is the show where I help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier. And actually a lot more. I have a blast doing this and I appreciate you as a listener. So thanks so much for being back with us today.

I have a special surprise for you today. Back in the early days of the show, I frequently has guests on the show. And for the past several months, you have only has me 🙂 But today I am going to surprise you with a very special guest. I have a copy of her brand new book in front of me. Her book is called The Help Yourself Cookbook for Kids. You have probably figured out now that my guest is Ruby Roth.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

Dr. Dave: “Welcome back Ruby! How’s it going there?

Ruby: “I am good! I am so happy to come back on your show and have fun!”

Dr. Dave: “It’s great to have you back. I remember the last time we did this quite some time ago and I wanted to start off by saying something. I don’t remember if I shared this with you last time. I was listening to you on Erin Red’s podcast Red Radio. Back then, you and Erin were two of the people that got me interested and got me to go vegan. Do you remember that?”

Ruby: “I totally remember that story. I think you were listening to it in the car.”

Dr. Dave: “I was listening to it in the car. I was with my wife and we were pulling up to an Indian restaurant. As a matter of fact, I think the Indian restaurant was vegan or at least vegetarian. So we’re listening and we pull up into the parking lot. As the show kept going on, I was listening to you and to Erin and it was so interesting to me. And to this day I still remember one of the things you said on the show. I don’t know whether this is a famous tagline of yours or if it’s something you say every time you speak. But Erin asked you a question something to the effect of; are you shoving this information down people’s throats? And you very calmly said no I really don’t believe in shoving anything down people’s throats but my goal is to give people enough information so they don’t shove the wrong thing down their throats.”

Ruby: “Yes, that is definitely a philosophy.”

Dr. Dave: “It’s funny because at the same time at the restaurant there was a vegan meetup going on. There was a big table of people in there and one guy was clearly in charge. And they were having a vegan meetup in there and talking about all vegan stuff. And everything kind of came together for that day. And from then on, we were vegan. So I wanted to thank you again. I am sure I probably thanked you last time you were on but you played a big part in my life and did not even realize it.”

Ruby: “I love that story. It’s one of my favorites and I will not forget it.”

Dr. Dave: “Great! I remember the last time we had you on I had a copy of your book, That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals. I am not sure if that was your first book or your second book.”

Ruby: “Yeah it was the first.”

Dr. Dave: “So that was your very first one back in 2009. And not only did you write the entire book but you illustrated it too. It’s really cool and I’ve got it sitting in front of me here still. My grandson is 2 1/2 and I still think he’s a little bit too young for me to bring this down to him. But that’s another dilemma that I have. His parents, my daughter and son in law, are very strict omnivores. And I don’t know how much they like me giving my child this book. But we are going to work it in one way or another.”

Ruby: “Yes, that is the exact mission of my new book. I talk about that. That was a request that I got a lot from vegan people. They wanted a book that they could share with their friends, family, and the non-vegan community where they didn’t feel like they were pressuring the recipient.”

Dr. Dave: “So you are now referring to The Help Yourself Cookbook for kids? The one that comes out April 5th.”

Ruby: “Yes”

Dr. Dave: “So let’s talk about this for a minute. I’ve got it in front of me. I’ve looked through the recipes. And by the way, I’ve got to tell you something, I know this was written for kids but I have a feeling that on the other hand you wrote this for adults to enjoy too. I’m looking at some of these pictures of these recipes and I’ve gotta tell you that some of these recipes like the Crowd Pleaser Kale Salad are things that I would like to make for lunch. That’s not just for kids is it?”

Ruby: “No, and my philosophy behind this book is that it was specifically not kid’s food. Which in my research of kid’s cookbooks, seemed to be very bland and super high in carbohydrates, salt, and sugar and no greens. I feel like we need to raise our standards as a society to meet the capabilities of children. So I think getting kids an early start on whole foods and greens. It’s very easy to normalize that in a child’s life.”

Dr. Dave: “Now how do we do that if the parents are not really on board? And I’ll give you an example. A few weeks ago I am in Breckenridge, Colorado skiing with my wife. Something I notice all the time when we are skiing and are around a big group of people is that people get hungry. During lunch, people go into the lodge and go to the restaurants on the mountain and I see a family; mom, dad, and kids, and 99% of the time what they are eating is just repulsive to me. They are not only eating dead animals but they are eating fried chicken type nugget food and the greasy french fries and soft drinks. And this is what the whole family is eating. And I am thinking this is not going to be an easy family to convert to something healthy. How do you change a whole family over?”

Ruby: “I think one hundred million billion percent that parents want their kids to eat more fruits and vegetables. That’s a scientific fact 😉 They want their kids eating healthy food even if the family hasn’t made the transition yet. I think all parents want that deeply. They want a quality of life and health. So I designed this book to be super appealing. Every single page is full color photo and just bursting with colorful food and illustrations. It’s not apparently, at first glance, about health or pushing health or veganism at all. This is just a really fun book that is designed for kids ages zero to one hundred to enjoy and flip through. And I wanted to create a book that I would enjoy reading. I think that very often resources for kids are dumbed down and don’t meet their actual psychological, physical, or spiritual capabilities.”

Dr. Dave:  “I love how you started it off. First off you have a note from the author. And this is actually geared to the kids. So you are talking to the kids and explains what they’re going to get out of this book. I loved it. And then I love the section you have right after that, it’s called Meet the Ingredients. Now I’ve read through this and it doesn’t have a lot of ingredients that maybe the general population are used to eating. Maybe you don’t even know about some of these things like algae, almond flower, Bragg liquid aminos, and mochi. Most people don’t know about these things. I even learned something when I was reading about nutritional yeast. I love nutritional yeast in salads and soups but I didn’t realize that it was so high in vitamin B12. So I learned something within fifteen seconds of reading your book.”

Ruby: “Great! Yeah that resources page is just to explain some of the steeples of a plant based diet that might be new to some people. But they certainly aren’t new at all. Any health store has these. And during my research I went into mainstream grocery stores and I could see that the plant based influence is happening in the mainstream because there were a lot of superfoods that are now accessible in these stores. From cacao to goji berries and chia and hemp seeds. They are all on trend so it’s becoming very easy to make healthier choices. It’s right at your fingertips where you don’t have to do a ton of research. Even ordering food off of the internet. When you are getting a whole family to transition and make healthier choices, that was one of my priorities in this book to make the ingredients accessible. And most of the ingredients in the book are things people already buy from quinoa to lentils to greens, they are available in any store.”

Dr. Dave: “It’s definitely getting a lot easier these days. In the past year to two years a lot of these things are in the mainstream and you can find them in “regular” grocery stores. You have a little section before you get started called Mine: A Letter to Grown-ups. And this actually is not geared to the kids but is geared to mom or dad reading this book. Why did you put that in there?”

Ruby: “That is a letter to parents. The rest of the book speaks directly to children. But I wanted to address the fact that a lot of parents feel iffy and ambivalent about bringing kids into the kitchen. They’re afraid that the flour is going to burst open or that things are going to spill or break. And they would just rather hurry up and do it themselves. But I think it’s a lost opportunity to get kids in the kitchen and engaged. Not only for the practical benefits of normalizing healthy foods using raw whole ingredients but also big picture skills like language and motor skills, decision making, critical thinking, and exercising the innovator’s mind. So my letter and goal there was to say hey we have this opportunity as adults to teach the

Dr. Dave: “Right, be willing to share your kitchen. If you haven’t shared with your kids in the past because maybe you felt like it was your domain, now it’s time to let them be involved and let them see that they can make some pretty cool healthy choices themselves. I love it! And I love the way you incorporate your artwork and photography into the actual recipes. It just reads very very well.”

Ruby: “Thank you! The photos were a prereq. I love cookbooks with photos so every single page of this book is a full color photo.”

Dr. Dave:  “Did you do the photography yourself?”

Ruby: “I did not. I brought in a photographer because that is not my skill and it took a lot of skill to layout these pages. But the illustrations and the design are all mine.”

Dr. Dave: “Yeah, I can tell that. It’s interesting. I can imagine that you had to prepare every one of these recipes and make it look good on the plate or the bowl. And then have the photographer in there. So how many days of cooking and photography did this take? I mean I know you didn’t do it in one day. There’s no way. You can’t prepare all that stuff in one day.”

Ruby: “The build up before to the actual week of the photo shoot was an entire summer of planning every minute of every day. Figuring out color palettes, and which characters were on which pages, how to book would be laid out, and which bowls and plates we would use. But we shot all sixty plus recipes in five days. So it was a ton of work even for a simple book like this. But I am really happy with the team that I had; the photographer and a food stylist to help which was great. Again, this was all natural lighting and nothing that a commercial food stylist would use. No paint, no altering of the food itself, it’s using completed unaltered food that I bought from the farmer’s market and from my local stores.”

Dr. Dave: “That’s really cool. Was it done in your kitchen?”

Ruby: “It was done in my house, yeah.”

Dr. Dave: “Beautiful! That’s great. I love it. I really love the book. Ruby, I am going to ask you a question. What is your absolute favorite recipe in this book? What would it be? There are some really cool ones but I want to hear your favorite.”

Ruby: “My go-to’s that I probably make the most are the kale salads so it’s funny that you picked that one right out. But the Crowd Pleaser Kale Salad is something I make when we have parties. It’s just kale this is softened with olive oil and a couple other toppings. But it’s something that I use as my introductory card for people whether we are attending a party or we are having a potluck. My helper bunny, which is the main character in the book, is helping on those pages with chopping and cutting of the kale.”

Dr. Dave: “I see that. Speaking of kale, I have a funny story for you. My wife, Yoko, and I were in New York a few days ago and we had to stop. I had never been in Champs Diner in Brooklyn, it’s a very famous all vegan diner, so we stopped. And I was telling my Dad that evening that we stopped in there that evening and we had a great vegan meal. And he asked what we got. And I said one of the things I got was a really cool kale salad. My Dad is eighty six years old and I was trying to explain to him that kale is actually raw. And he was having a really tough time understanding how people could eat raw kale. And I said, Dad it’s not only delicious but it’s so good for you.”

Ruby: “Absolutely! And it’s one of the most nutritionally dense foods on the index.”

Dr. Dave: “Absolutely! Absolutely! It’s a cruciferous vegetable. It’s really really nutritious and healthy. And I love your Brocco-tree Bisque which looks delicious. It’s looks like broccoli. I am going to make that too.”

Ruby: “Yeah, it’s so simple. And one of the things I did in this book was to simplify the process. So if I was going to make if for myself I might saute each ingredient separately and add it to the pot. But for this book, we throw everything in the pot at the same time and then blend it up after and it tastes just as good. And I think if it’s easier and quicker for people to do then the better for this book.”

Dr. Dave: “You know I think the fact that you made it kid friendly also makes it dad friendly. Because I am not what you call a good chef. And something that’s really easy for me to make like this Brocco-tree Bisque. It looks delicious and it is not intimidating. There’s not a list of a thousand ingredients. and then two pages of directions. It’s all on one page; it’s really really easy. This is great! I love it! You’re changing the world. I don’t know if you even realize this, you’re an author, a vegan educator, you are literally changing the world. Why did you choose children to as your audience?”

Ruby: “Well, I’m an artist before I am a writer and I was teaching art at an after school program and the kids were all very curious why I wasn’t drinking the milk or eating the cheese that they served at recess. When I went to find a book that we could talk about, everything I saw was a talking animal or a talking vegetable. And I just thought that a) that takes away from the child’s intelligence and b) also from the rich emotional lives of animals. So I created these books that I wanted to see in the marketplace. I was also interested in social justice and politics. And I was able to put those two passions together.”

Dr. Dave: “The book is called The Help Yourself Cookbook for Kids by Ruby Roth. She not only wrote it but she also did the incredible illustrations. Even if you’re not vegan and even if you don’t have kids, I am going to recommend that you pick up a copy of this just to look through it and look at these delicious recipes and look at the artwork and the photos.  I like things simple. Even in my podcast, it’s simple. It’s twenty minutes long generally. I don’t go into incredible weird details. I like to make things easy for people. I love this book just because I like things easy. It’s coming out April 5th. What’s the easiest way that my listeners can grab themselves a copy?”

Ruby: “The books will be available wherever books are sold so online or in stores. I encourage people to get them from bookstores because I think that also tells the bookstore that people are interested in these kinds of books. But I am happy for people to order it anywhere. They will also be able to get them at my website at www.wedonteatanimals.com.”

Dr. Dave: “That is great! We have a link for ordering below so that people can find a way to get it. (click on the book cover graphic). Ruby, the time goes so fast. I thank you so much for your time. I know you are a busy woman and have a lot going on. I bet you are already thinking about your next book. I am guessing.”

Ruby: “Stay tuned. Stay tuned :)”

Dr. Dave: “Thanks so much for being on the show today. And I invite you back anytime. I love your information and your passion for healthy living and living animal free except for pets of course. We love pets”.

Ruby: “Thank you for your work and for all you do for your audience as well. I appreciate being on the show tremendously.”

Dr. Dave: “Back at you on that one and let’s have you back another time. Good luck with your book. I wish you all the luck in the world. It’s a great project. I know it’s going to do well.”

129 – Scales, Weight, and Lies

Welcome back to the David Madow Lifestyle Show. This is the show where I help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier. Today, I am out on the street in one of my favorite cities in the world – New York City. I am broadcasting live on the streets of Manhattan today. And I am going to get right into today’s show!

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

Today’s topic is about your weight, the scale, and whether or not you should weigh yourself. Should you care if you gain weight? This all started a few days ago when I was on a Facebook group and some woman wrote into the Facebook group for help. She is trying to eat right but she has noticed over the past few months she has gained a lot of weight. And as a matter of fact she weighs the most she has ever weighed. So she wanted advice on what she should do. I have to admit, I was appalled by some of the responses that were coming in. And I know we’re living in a world today, at least in the U.S., where everybody is a winner and everybody should get a medal. But the responses were something like “oh don’t worry you are still a great person inside” “the number on the scale doesn’t mean anything”, and “don’t worry about the scale, you’re beautiful inside and out”. And I am thinking this is making me sick because this woman is getting such horrible advice from people saying not to worry about the number on the scale. Not to worry that you are the heaviest you have been in your entire life?! That is such horrible advice. I was in disbelief.

Let me back up for a second because I want to be very clear. I do believe this woman was probably a great person and she probably has a great heart but to have someone say to her not to have somebody say to her “don’t worry about the number on the scale, it doesn’t mean anything.” That’s crazy advice and you are not helping that woman out. It is a fact that when you are overweight or obese you stand a much greater chance of getting diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, knee problems, and joint problems. I can say this from experience. I have two parents who are both up in age right now but they are both overweight and they are seeing the results of being overweight for a long time. They are experiencing health problems and let me tell you something, it’s not fun. So for someone to tell this poor woman who was reaching out and asking for advice, “don’t worry about it the number on the scale, it’s only a number. You’re still beautiful” Ok she probably was a beautiful person but she needs help.

If I were to tell you not to worry about the number on the scale, I would be doing you a disservice. I am here to help people. I am here to teach people. I am here to inspire people. I want to make people feel good but I also want to tell the truth. And the truth is being overweight kills. I am not God and I don’t try to play God. But it’s been shown in study after study that if you are overweight you stand a much greater chance of getting diseases. Does that mean that every overweight person is going to get a disease? No! It’s just the same as every smoker does not get lung cancer. I don’t know about you but I like to play my odds. I know that being thin, and moving my body, and eating plant based foods, and not eating processed foods, and limiting salt, oil, and sugar; it’s not a guarantee of a long life and it’s not a guarantee that I will be free of disease. I realize that.

It is almost like an insurance policy. First of all, you will look and feel better. Again, I am not against obese people but I would challenge anybody to tell me that an obese person looks better and healthier than a thin person. I would challenge that. I just don’t think it’s true. There are so many problems that come with obesity.

When I was growing up, the winners were the people that came in first place. The people that were the best in the class, they are the ones that got rewarded. It wasn’t everybody. We’ve gone too far in this country to make sure everything is politically correct, we have to watch what we say, and everybody’s a winner. We’re afraid to say it like it is.

So I am going to tell you right now. First of all, I appreciate you being my listener! No matter what kind of health you are in, no matter what you are eating, no matter what your weight is, I love you! But for me to say that you’re doing it right and that you look great at 500 pounds, I’m just not going to say that. I still love you but I am not going to say that. And you know as well as I do that if you’re 500 pounds you could do better than that.

I just did a Periscope broadcast a few minutes ago and I had people from all over the world. I was talking about these things and people started asking me if I am a racist? If I hate people? And why I am so angry? The funny thing is that they don’t know me. I am not angry. And I am not a racist. What I have to say has absolutely nothing to do with someone’s skin color, religion, or sexual preference. If you are a friend of mine or a listener of mine and even if you don’t agree with me, I still love you.

I really do apologize for the background noise. It’s a totally different world in New York City. I had a show a few weeks ago (Episode # 127) and I talked about how I love Colorado and how it’s so peaceful and beautiful but I like a lot of different things. And although I don’t love the noise, I do love the hustle and bustle of New York City. I think it really is one of the coolest cities in the world. So if you are listening to me in another country and you have never been to the U.S., I am going to recommend that you come pay us a visit and come to the coolest city in the world – New York City.

I use the scale as an instrument. The scale is a valuable instrument that I use practically every day. If and when I see the pounds creeping up a little bit, I know to back off on something. Whether it be that I am eating a little too much or that I am eating the wrong things. I use the scale as a guide and it has worked for me for many years. I know there are schools of thought out there that say eat the best foods, exercise, and don’t weight yourself. This is because they think you are going to be too obsessed with a number and I see their point but I disagree having done it the other way and using my scale as an instrument that gives me information about my body. And these days I have it hooked up online so it records all the weight, BMI, and percent body fat and then I can go to an app and check that and see how I am doing over years. I use the Withings Smart Body Analyzer. It was one of the best gifts I ever received.

If you’re screwing something up in your life, not just your weight, for example I know there are people who have spouses in their lives who are alcoholics or drug addicts and they just keep enabling them thinking it’s going to be ok. It’s not ok! You need help if that is the case. Let’s not sugar coat it! Tell it like it is!

As I am out here on the streets of Manhattan, a lot of people are walking by. I am seeing people who are all different shapes and builds. Unfortunately, the heavier people are going to be more prone to disease as they get older. There is no doubt about it. If I was a betting man, I would say that the thin fit looking man will live a longer life than the overweight couple I saw. Love me or hate me, I am just being honest.

Let me just tell you one more thing before you leave today. I love you and appreciate you as a listener. No matter what you are trying, let’s do the best we possibly can!

I can’t wait to see you next week! Until next time…

128 – You Have a Friend, Three Effective Ways to Combat Sadness

Welcome to episode #128! This is the show where I help you live longer, stronger, healthier, and happier. I have a really important show for you today. I did a Periscope broadcast about this the other day that was very popular, but I have noticed that many of you are experiencing some type of sadness, depression, or anxiety. Or maybe you are just not feeling good about what the future has in store for you. I want to devote a good part of the show to helping you with that today. Even if you are not experiencing some type of sadness, I want you to stick with me.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

When I started this show close to 2 1/2 years ago now, I really didn’t know which way it was going to go. I’ve got listeners from all over the world now and I want to make it very clear that even if we haven’t met in person, you have a friend right here. You can talk to me about anything, you can tell me anything, you can ask me a question. I want you to consider us as friends. And I truly mean that! As you know this podcast doesn’t cost you any money and I don’t make any money from this. I do it because I feel like I have a mission in life. I have work to do! I am your friend and if there is anything you need from me please let me know. When I did the Periscope broadcast the other day it got a lot of attention. I didn’t know this at the time but I am finding out now that as we transition from Winter to Spring, people are sad. I am not sure of the actual reasons why this is happening, but I have spoke with many people over the past week that have told me that they are sad and depressed. They’re not really feeling good about they way things are going in their lives. And they feel that there is no solution. I am here to tell you that there is. I am going to share three things with you that I really do believe will help you.

Unless you are chronically depressed (which is a very serious condition), please realize that if you have a day that is not going the way you would like it to be or you’re sad about something, it is going to pass. When you are in that state of mind, sit down and recognize that it’s going to pass and sometime later that day or the next you are going to feel better. A lot of times that’s enough to sort of get you through.

However, I think you will find that if you do the following three things, you are going to feel a lot happier. A lot of the depression and the anxiety is going to go away. Even if you are not sad or anxious or depressed these things are important anyway and I know they make your life much better.

  1. Magic Four – Try your best to get outside and walk four miles every single day. This is a commitment and will take some time. I don’t recommend that you do it on the treadmill, although the treadmill is better than nothing. But I really do believe there is something about being outside in the air that is good for us. Number one, if you get outside and it’s light and sunny, you will get your fix of vitamin D which so many of us are deficient in. Try your best to do four miles but if you can’t, you can’t. I know we all have time constraints and it does take an hour. But when you get out there, there is something about the four mile point that you are going to start feeling better physically and mentally. Physically it just makes sense. When you are out walking for an hour, it’s aerobic, the blood is flowing, your metabolism is going, and you are doing a lot for your body. Somebody asked me the other day if it was ok to do this in increments. So if your goal is four miles, you could walk one mile four times per day. My answer is that it’s ok but I really do believe it’s best to do it all at once. When you hit that four mile mark you’re going to feel things in your muscles that you wouldn’t feel if you were splitting it up. It’s almost meditative, when you are out there for an hour you can let your mind go. You can do different things; you can think, you can plan your day, listen to music, breathe and be mindful. There are so many things you can do. For example, I listen to a Japanese language program because I am trying to learn more Japanese. I also listen to a financial podcast. Those that plan financially, tend to do better. It has nothing at all to do with how many money one makes. But it depends on how you are at planning and how responsible you are with it. As you walk you are oxygenating your brain so much that ideas start to come to your mind. You’ll start reaching goals. It’s really amazing what happens. If you don’t believe me just try it! There is something magical about it and I have been saying this since I wrote my book in 2007 and I still believe in it so strongly. Get out there and walk every day if you possibly can.
  2. Eliminate Processed Foods – Eat all healthy whole foods preferably organic. What does that mean? It means that if the food is free of additives and chemicals. I take it one step further since I am vegan and only eat foods that come from the ground. I highly recommend it but that is your choice. At the very least let’s start with eliminating processed foods, junk food, sugars, oil, and salt. When you start eating whole foods you will begin to notice a tremendous change in the way you feel and the way you look.
  3. Meditate – This is something I have been doing on a regular basis for a couple years now. Mediation is a life changer. I will tell you how I do it. There is nothing crazy or esoteric at all. Basically I sit down in a comfortable position sitting upright. In a quiet room, I close my eyes. I suggest setting a timer so you don’t have to think about the time. Start with five or ten minutes. Take a deep breath in, hold it, and then let it out. While I am breathing in and out, I am repeating a mantra during each breath in and out. This helps to clear your mind of other thoughts. “Sweep” the thoughts from your mind and focus on slowly breathing in and out. When you do this on a regular basis it is such a game changer. You will feel so much better, your mind will be clear, you will be more positive, little things won’t bother you anymore, your blood pressure will go down, the list is endless. Go online and Google the “health benefits of meditation” and you will see that there are literally hundreds. It’s unbelievable! It really works! If I miss a day, I really can tell the difference. I am urging you to please try it. Especially if you are experiencing mood changes between the seasons or if you are feeling not quite right.

All of these things will make a big difference. Once you can eliminate the bad food, and you are walking, and you’re meditating, you will definitely begin to see big changes in how you look and feel. These are three things that I will personally guarantee that will help you live longer, stronger, healthier, and happier!

Don’t forget to follow me on Periscope @davidmadow. I try to do a motivational and inspirational “scope” every day. If I help one person a day, it totally makes my day! I love sharing my life and my experiences with you guys.

127 – What Colorado Taught Me

We are back with episode #127! This is the show where we help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, happier, and a lot more. If you have been a regular listener to my show, you can recite that without even thinking as well. You know exactly what this show helps you do!

Right now, I am on Interstate 70 driving East from Breckenridge, Colorado to Frisco, Colorado. Today is the day that I am flying back to Maryland. It’s a little bit bittersweet because I love Colorado. There is something about the mountains here that are just incredible. There comes a day when I have to go back home to Maryland but guess what? I’ll be back in Colorado before we all know it.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

Before we get into today’s topic, I wanted to welcome you all today. If you are a regular listener, I really appreciate you! If you are a brand new listener, then I welcome you, I appreciate you and I want you to listen to this whole thing. Not only that I want you to immerse yourself in this culture. The #davidmadowlifestyle will absolutely help you in your life! If you have any kind of issues, whether they are health, emotional, or you’re just not where you want to be in life; I want you to stick with me I am going to help you.  I LOVE doing this! I love talking to you! Whenever I record one of these shows I picture you in front of me. Whether you and I are having coffee or sitting on a sofa in my living room, I am not just talking into a mic. I am talking directly to you and I am sure there’s going to be so many things in today’s episode that you can identify with. I don’t consider you a fan or a follower, I consider you a friend.

Let’s face it, we can all use help sometimes. I can use help! Everybody thinks that Dr. Dave life runs perfectly and I have no problems. But just like you, I have the same things going on in my life that you’ve got. Things don’t come easy for me all the time but I love, love, love helping. So I wanted to share with you some of the things that happened to me in Colorado.

During the past three weeks or so I lost about seven pounds. When I am in Colorado for some reason the lifestyle really agrees with me. I feel great and it’s the reason I lost the weight naturally. I am moving my body every single day.Whether I am hiking, walking into town, skiing, no matter what I am always moving my body. Unlike when I am back on the East coast. Let’s be honest I try to move my body as much as possible but I have business meetings and lunch meetings and it’s just not the same. That’s why one day I really believe that Colorado is in my future because I think the lifestyle out here is just a healthier lifestyle. I really do. There must be something about the altitude that really agrees with my metabolism. I am not exactly sure but I am going to have to look into that. Not only did I lose weight but my skin looks so much better. People always say that when you go out West it’s so dry that you have to use moisturizer all the time or your skin is going to be dry. In my case that is not true. Partly, I think, it’s because I am eating so healthy. I basically eat plants all day long and I think that plants give me the nutrients that my skin needs so I don’t have to be putting moisturizer on my skin all day. I am also drinking a lot of water. One of the reasons that people’s skin gets so dry is because they are just not getting the proper nutrients. I guarantee you. I hate to say it like this but I just think that if you are eating animal products your skin will not be as healthy as if you were eating plants all day long.

I am really serious about the diet. I have been vegan (no animal products at all) for two years now. But not only vegan but I also do not eat any processed foods and very minimal sugars, oils, and salt. I grew up believing that olive oil was healthy and it’s not. Just like people believe that coconut oil is healthy. It is a processed product. Do not use coconut oil and think that you’re going to get healthy. Trust me, you are not. I know we need oil but get your oils naturally from plants such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and things like that. Oil and fat come naturally in plants. You don’t have to use processed oils such as olive oil and coconut oil.

As I am traveling and driving on Interstate a lot of thoughts come to my brain 🙂 In about a month, I have two speaking gigs that are about six days apart. One is in Phoenix, Arizona and the other is in Little Rock, Arkansas. What I am thinking about doing is taking a little road trip by myself.

But anyway back to my original topic. As you can see by my rambling, I am regimented but also fly by the seat of my pants.

It is difficult for me to live the exact life I want to live back home in Maryland. I love Maryland and I love my house but I don’t have the mountains and the exact outdoor things outside of my doorstep like I have in Colorado. When I come here I look at it as a cleansing. Yes, I drank a lot of juice and meditated every day but by cleansing I mean that I moved my body a lot every single day. I also ate really good healthy food. Can you do this? I think you can.

I just got off the phone with my Dad, who, as many of you know has been having health issues. He is 86. He told me he has good days and bad days. Some days he just doesn’t feel right and he feels dizzy and tired. I told him that the two most important things you can do every day, no matter how old, are one to move your body every day. And number two eat healthy all day every day. Notice I didn’t say vegan. I understand there is most likely no chance that my Dad will ever be vegan. He is 86 and has eaten meat products all his life and he is pretty set in his ways. But can my Dad eat healthier than he has been eating? Absolutely!

If you are living in the United States and are over 40 years old, I will almost guarantee that you are on at least one prescription medication. As you get to age 55-60, the average American is on 5-6 different types of medication. That’s just crazy! I honestly believe it’s because we are not moving our bodies enough but more importantly we are not putting the right “fuel” into our system. If we’re eating processed products, and greasy fried things, and things that are high in sugar, salt, and oil, it is a recipe for illness. There’s no question about it. Human beings are not designed to eat animals products. Some people think that we are but actually my training is that I am a dentist by profession. And when I look at a human beings teeth and I compare our teeth to a true carnivore there is such a difference. Our teeth look like an herbivore’s teeth. And the length of our digestive track is too long. Animal products spend too much time in the gut and they rot. Since I stopped eating animal products I feel so much better, I am on no medication, my weight is good and my skin is good. When I turned on the microphone to talk to you today, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to talk about. I kinda knew but I didn’t know what kind of detail I was going to get into. But I just feel so strongly about a plant based diet. Now am I going to hate you if you don’t do this? No! I consider you my friend and I have told you this before. It got back to me that someone thought I was really arrogant about if you don’t do what I do then I think less of you. And that could not be further from the truth. I still have a lot of friends of mine that are eating animal products and I have family members that are eating animal products. I do not think any less of you. I am here to teach! I think that maybe one day the time will come where you see that the people who are eating animal products have more health issues. There’s no question in my mind there. Maybe one day you will say ok I am just going to give them up. It’s not difficult to do. It’s really really not.

I hope I have inspired you today. And that there’s at least one piece of information that you can use in your life.

One last thing, if there is something that you are trying to do in your life, please do it regardless of what it is. One of my true passions is teaching, helping you, inspiring you, and motivating you to live a better life. And you would not believe how many people in my life have told me that was the most ridiculous thing ever. There was no way that I could change people, and I am not going to change the world, I am not going to get people to go plant based, and I am not going to save the animals. People have told me just to stop. Guess what? That is so far from the truth! I’m doing it! Let the naysayers make fun of me, I don’t care. Live your life the way you want to! Don’t put it off another day please!

126 – You Can Do the Impossible

Welcome to episode #126 of The David Madow Lifestyle Show! This is the show where I help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier. I want your undivided attention today. What I will be teaching you today will help your life. I guarantee it!

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

I am still in Breckenridge, Colorado as I am recording this. I have been here for about three weeks now but I am leaving tomorrow to come back home to Maryland. People ask me if I am excited about that? And do I want to come back? Here’s the deal. I love my home in Maryland. Yoko and I live in a nice home in a rural setting. There is farmland and horses and we just love it there. But I LOVE Colorado as well. I love the mountains and the snow and I love Colorado in the summer. There’s something about it that’s just magical to Yoko and I. Who know maybe one day this will be our home permanently but until then we are very fortunate and thankful that we get to come out here at least a couple times a year.

So how are you doing?  How is your year coming along so far? We are already into March. And I really hope you are living your life the way you want to live it. You only get one chance and we got to do what we want to do in life. I am going to help you with something today that I think is going to help get you in the right direction if you have been stalled a little bit. If there is really something that you dream about doing, but you haven’t had the motivation, courage, or guts to do it, I am going to teach you that you can do practically anything that you want in your life.

You may have heard me say this before, but when I was younger I really wanted to play guitar. My parents went out and bought me a guitar and I went to guitar lessons and I practiced. But I wasn’t really that good. I kinda sucked. It didn’t come naturally to me so in order to play I had to practice. And other things got in the way like sports. So I just gave it up and put the guitar in the closet. I kind of felt like a failure and so I never really did much with it. Even in my later years as I got older. Maybe in my late thirties I started messing around with it again. I hired a guitar teacher and kind of the same thing happened. I wasn’t very good and over time it just went by the wayside. It was something I always wanted to do but it just never really happened for me. I am never going to be a famous rock star but this dream ultimately kind of come true. When my son recently got married, about 6 months ago, I pulled my guitar out of the closet, put some new strings on it, and tuned it up. And I actually wrote a song for my son’s wedding. I decided that instead of doing a conventional speech I would perform the song. So I played in front of about 180 to 200 people and it went really well.

After the wedding, I wondered what I could do using my new (semi) talent. I got the idea that I would write a vegan parody song. A friend of mine gave me the idea to use the song “Leavin’ on a Jet Plane”, and with some help from my brother Rich, I created the song “Vegan on a Jet Plane”. My friend, Don Robertson, who runs a vegan potluck in Maryland, graciously asked me to play it for his group one evening. I said “yes”. So here I am this inexperienced musician playing my song in front of about 40 people in the room and I recorded it. I shared the video on Facebook and it got a lot of views and a lot of great comments. So from there I started writing another song called “Dear Vegan”. Now remember I am not a songwriter, I am not a guitar player, and I am not a musician but I was so passionate and determined to do something that I figured out a way to do this without even having that much experience. I have even started to get calls from vegetarian festivals wanting me to play my songs. The lesson here is if you really want to do something badly enough I truly believe it can be done.

What is it that you want to do? I know there is something in your life that you have been putting off. I am convinced that if you are listening to me right now there is probably one thing that you really want to do in your life but for some reason you just put it off. You don’t think you will be that good at it. I am the same way. I have been that way too. It’s time to just forget about what other people think, or whether you are good or bad. Because if you are doing something and you love it, it doesn’t matter if you are good or bad. I can give you so many examples. I am runner and I am not a fast runner. Never have been. Many people would give it up because they were frustrated that they were always at the back of the pack or never won a race. But for me it was the opposite, I don’t care if I am at the back of the pack because there are so many benefits to running. I have been running for about 35 years now. If I would have given it up that would have been horrible. Instead I have actually made it a big deal that I am a slow runner. I think being a slow runner is better than being a fast runner. I have several friends that have been competitive runners and you know what happens? They get burned out, injured, and it’s just too much for their body. They’ve stressed their body so much over the years that they just can’t do it anymore. I might be the “back of the pack” guy but I keep doing it for my entire life.

Another example for you is skiing. I am not anywhere close to the best skier on the mountain. I am pretty good but it has taken me a long time to get pretty good. Years ago I was horrible. It would have been easy for me to give it up. But I never gave it up and kept persisting. Now at 60 years old I am pretty good but I am nowhere close to the best people on the mountain. As long as I can get up to the top of the mountain and ski down, I call myself a skier. And the same goes for singing. I’ve been singing for a long time. But I remember when I was younger and people told me that I couldn’t sing and that I sucked. But it’s ok because I am happy with myself and I am totally confident. I don’t care if I get up on the stage and some people don’t like it.

These are just a few examples. I know there is something inside of you that you want to do. I am positive of that!

My point is to do something you are passionate about, you don’t have to be the best. You don’t even have to be in the middle. You can be bad at something but try your best and do it and be passionate about it. As you do it you will get better and better at it. Don’t compare yourself to other people. Do what you are comfortable doing.

Your challenge from this episode is to think of one thing in your life that you have wanted to do but you have just put it off for some reason. It could be anything – art, language, singing, or writing – anything. I want you to make today the day that you are going to say “hey, I have put this off too long. I’m going to get started and try this.” What’s your passion?

You don’t have to be perfect. I am far from perfect. I love to help people and inspire people but no way am I perfect. I am no different than you. The only difference is that maybe I have figured some things out that you haven’t gotten to yet. I have figured out how to make almost any goal come true. I have figured out how to live my life the way I want to live it. Because I am no longer worried or afraid of what other people are going to think of me. I don’t care if I am bad. I do the best I can and I don’t let it bother me. And guess what?  I am going into a professional recording studio to record my two vegan parody songs. Twenty years ago if you had asked me I would never of thought that I would be going into a recording studio to record two singles. But I am doing it now because I have overcome the fear. I don’t let anything stop me. What’s the worst thing that could happen?

If you have any questions I am here to help! I love doing this and I love inspiring. I have been there and done that. I am not much different than you at all. I don’t worry about what anyone will think. These days I do what’s in my gut and what’s in my heart. It works for me really well and I know it will work for you.

Don’t let this go. Promise me that you are going to come up with your idea and work on it. Shoot me a message and let me know what it is! I’d love to hear it!

125 – Three Rules to Live By Every Single Day

Welcome to episode #125! Where does the time go? I have been doing these podcasts for over two years. Wow! I LOVE every second of it. I love helping, teaching, inspiring, and motivating. If you are listening today, thank you very much. Today, I am going to share with you three rules that I live by every single day. It has nothing to do with eating, nothing about exercising, nothing about meditation, these are three entirely different rules that I live by every day.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

Before I get into it just a few things to talk about real quick.

  • If you haven’t caught me on Periscope yet, I am going to strongly recommend. I broadcast live from wherever I am at and you get to interact with me. You can show me love by giving me hearts and you can ask me questions. Periscope is a fun platform. It’s growing and I want you to be there with us. It’s a free download for iPhone or Android. Download and follow me @davidmadow. If you keep your notifications on, you will receive a notification when I am broadcasting.
  • My book, Vegan in 7 Days, has hit a few roadblocks. Originally we were going to have this ready by summer of 2016 but it does not look like it will be out in time. It is going to happen at some point but it won’t be by summer. I apologize, I did not want to lead anybody on. It’s a great concept and I am still moving forward with it.
  • I want to have some fun. Let’s try this. I want to see who you are and what you are doing right now. My challenge to you is that wherever you are and whatever you are doing, stop what you’re doing for just one minute and take a selfie. We don’t want this to be dirty so please keep it family friendly. Snap a selfie and send it to me Facebook page here.

The 3 Rules I Live By Everyday

  1. I did not invent this but I follow this rule everyday. I follow the “golden rule”. For those of you who don’t know that means that I treat others that way that I want to be treated. It sounds so simple and trite. But these days it seems that people are so inconsiderate. I spend my life trying to be considerate to other people and I think if more people were like that the world would be a better place to live. I always try to do the right thing. Whatever I do in my life I would never want it to negatively impact someone else’s enjoyment or time. So please live by the golden rule. If even most of you listen to me and abide by that then I think we will have a much better planet.
  2. I’ve talked about this before. It is something that I believe in very strongly and do everyday. Do what you love. My life has totally changed since I began living by this rule. It hasn’t always been this way. When I was going through secondary school and professional school, I wasn’t doing what I loved. I couldn’t look in the mirror and say that I loved what I did everyday. I got into the mindset that I am going to do what I love everyday. When you can’t tell the difference between work and a vacation or the weekend and your work, then you have arrived and you are doing what you love. It really bothers me when I hear people say things like “just two more days until the weekend then thank God it’s Friday”, or “I can’t to go on vacation, I have to get out of this rat race”. I think to myself what kind of life are you living? Why would you ever want to live most of your days doing something that you don’t like? Why would you ever do that? I’ve done it both ways. I have been there. I have been in jobs that I didn’t like and jobs that I didn’t like and relationships that I didn’t like. I don’t think there is anybody out there that is going to argue with me when I say that it’s much better to be doing what you love everyday than something that you hate every day. If someone disagrees with that and says that you should be doing something that you hate, hey if you want to follow them go ahead and follow them. I’m not going to 🙂 The same thing goes for a relationship. If you are in a relationship and it is not working out for you and you are dreading it, it’s going nowhere, and you are upset and anxious, change it. I am not a proponent of divorce. Divorce is not easy. It’s horrible. Your first choice is to try to make it better. Go to counseling and work things out if necessary. But if it doesn’t work, move on and find something better. Life is short. Don’t stay in something that you are hating. Don’t do it!
  3. This is something that I have been doing lately. It is a game changer. It’s one compound word – downsize. I’m coming at you from experience because I have done things both ways. I used to live a life where I had this big house, fancy cars in the garage, and the kids in private school, and a closet full of clothes. It was a bunch of things I just didn’t need. There was not one “thing” that made me happy. Things don’t make me happy. Being with the right people, that’s what makes me happy. Not something in my closet, jewelry, or a fancy car. I like a good car but that does not make me happy. So I’ve learned to downsize my life. I paid off anything that I owed. I paid off my mortgage and I own my home free and clear. I have regular bills but I don’t have any loans or credit card debt. It doesn’t matter how much money or how little money you are making, you can do the same thing. It’s called downsizing and it means that you are spending way less money than you make. It’s not difficult to do. I don’t spend my life chasing after the almighty dollar like so many people do. I keep my life very simple but I have always been responsible with my money. I put money into retirement. I just don’t need a ton of money to be happy. My wife Yoko and I are able to travel and do the things that we want and we don’t travel extravagantly. I am not staying at the Ritz Carlton. We stay in comfortable places. I’ve even gone through my closets and cabinets to get rid of stuff. When you try to get rid of stuff in your life, it will be so much better. I will leave you with this story. Sometime last year I ended up writing the largest check I’ve written in my entire life. And I wrote this check to this person to make my life more peaceful. The minute I wrote that check most of my money was gone. A good percentage of it anyway. But guess what? I feel better now than before I wrote the check. It was worth so much more than having that money sitting in my bank account. I have less now and I am happier than I have been in my entire life!

These are the rules that I follow everyday. If you do, I am sure good things will happen in your life as well.

I appreciate you! Remember, these episodes come out once a week on Monday and you can enjoy them at your leisure.

124 – Cleansing, Injuries, Weight Gain and Goals

This is the show where I help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier. I am recording live from Breckenridge, CO today. I am outside today on the Burro Trail. It’s the same trail that Yoko and I ran the Breck Crest Half Marathon this past summer. I wasn’t sure if it would be possible due to the winter but it is definitely hikeable and it is beautiful. If you ever get out to the Breckenridge area, I am going to highly recommend this trail.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

Let me tell you why I am on this trail today and not on the ski slope. If you have been following me for a little while now, you probably know that I got a ski injury not too long ago when I was in Japan. Thankfully, I think it was the first injury that I have ever had skiing. It wasn’t that bad and did not require any kind of surgery or cast or crutches, or anything like that. It’s been about 6 or 7 weeks now and I am trying to baby it. Although I did test it a little yesterday and the day before. I went skiing and stayed on the blue courses which are intermediate. So, this morning as we were walking down the steps with boots on and skis in hand, I twisted my leg again somehow. I was practically in tears and told Yoko that I could not go skiing today. So I am really babying it now and I am going to take it easy for the next few weeks. I’ll do a little bit of skiing as I can but I am not going to go crazy. But anyhow, that is why I am on the Burro Trail. I had some time so I put my trail running shoes on and came out here and it’s just absolutely gorgeous.

Let me tell you my goal and what I want to accomplish while I am in Breckenridge this winter. It started over the holidays and when I was in Japan. I started gaining a little weight for various reasons. Partly from my injury and not being able to be as mobile as I would like to be. I didn’t exercise a lot or do my running or my walking. I just kinda got lazy. Lazy meant eating a little bit more and eating foods that were not so good for me such as processed foods. Yes, I am human I make mistakes. No meat or animal products though. I will never make an exception for that. Anyhow I started looking down at the scale and noticed that I was gaining a little bit of weight. After my leg injury, I came down with a bug that lasted a good three weeks or so. I want you to understand that I screw up too. I am never perfect. So I am here in Breckenridge and I am looking at this as a cleanse for me. By the time I leave Breckenridge in 2 ½ weeks, I have a goal. My goal weight is 182 pounds. In the interest of transparency, I will tell you that I currently weigh 191.2 pounds. I am pretty tall at 6’ 2” so 191 is not overweight for me but I know it’s not ideal for me. When I first got here to Breckenridge I weighed 194.2 pounds. So in two days I have already dropped 3 pounds. I am going to share with you what I am doing. And you don’t have to be in Breckenridge or on a retreat to do it.

For breakfast, we typically have a bunch of fruit, a small bowl of oatmeal, and some green tea. We usually eat in as much as possible because it is hard not to overeat when you eat out. We go to the supermarket a lot and always try to buy organic. We eat very well. We also walk everywhere we go. It’s very uncommon for us to take a car anywhere. We are usually skiing by day, walking by night, we are usually moving. This is basically the perfect recipe for getting healthier and shedding the pounds.

Yes, I am teaching you how to live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier and here your host admitting that he screws up! It’s a little bit embarrassing. I am going to eat really clean, get a ton of exercise, get sleep, relaxing, and reducing the stress. When I get back to Maryland, my goal is to keep up with this lifestyle. So here I am doing my cleansing. I am going to be back in great shape in no time at all. March 5th is the day that I return to Maryland. Yoko is not coming back with me by the way. She is actually traveling on with a friend to run a half marathon out west and then she fly back home to Maryland. My goal is to let you know on March 5th what my weight is and how I feel. I am pretty sure it is going to be great news.

So I have spent the show so far talking about me and my woes. And how I got so out of shape this winter and how I am going to combat that. Now let’s turn this around. The goal of the show is not to talk about me but it’s to help you. Where are you at now? We are just about into March now. How are you doing with your goals?  I am sure if you are a follower, you have set goals because I have discussed many times that goals are very important. Maybe they were weight management, maybe eating, maybe they were exercise, maybe they were business or financial. Whatever they were, I hope you set some goals. How are you doing with them? I hope you didn’t just list a few goals and never returned to see them again. Never looking back at your notebook. If you haven’t done this yet, it’s not too late. Think about what you want to accomplish. What’s your ideal weight? What’s your ideal exercise regimen? What is your ideal investment portfolio? Whatever your goals may be. Write them down and I want you to read them every single day. It doesn’t have to be a lot of goals, it could be one or two. As a matter of fact, having just a handful of goals is better than having a lot because when you have a lot you get overwhelmed. I don’t want to overwhelm you. I want you to have a small handful of goals. Think about what you want to accomplish this year, write them down, and read them every single day. I want you to let me know how it’s going with you. I will guarantee that if you do this and read your goals every single day, you will be living the life that YOU want to live. I know you can do it!

One of my goals is to spend more and more time in Breckenridge, CO. We just love it here. There’s nothing like it. Life is short. It seems as in the blink of an eye, you are old. Whatever you want to do in your life, you have one chance! I am here in Breckenridge living my dream. The only reason I am living my dream is because I’ve written it down, I’ve studied it, and I figured out how to make this happen. I do things smart and Yoko and only spend a lot of money on things that are very important to us. We spend our money on things that truly matter. We don’t need a big house. We don’t buy designer clothes. Being in a place like this is worth more to me than any kind of jewelry or mansion. We don’t need that.

Also something that is very important to me is to give. Give to others that are in need. Give to organizations. I give to a lot of animal organizations because I really do love animals and want to see them care for and rescued. Think about giving.

I am trying to change your life because if you are like most people, they get every morning, go to a job that they hate and eat a lot of unhealthy food that is making them sick. And before they know it they are old and are saying to themselves “What did I do my whole life? Why did I spend my life doing this?” I do not want you to waste your life. I want you to live your dream. I will change your life, but you have to listen to me. You can’t just turn this off now and say that was a good episode and then just go back to something that you just absolutely hate. Promise me you won’t do that! Is that a deal? Live YOUR dream! I am living mine J
